How To Make A Removable Fabric Bed Head Board – Home Sweet Home

This is the story of how I made our new headboard out of $7 of plastic sheeting and some pillows.

Now it looks like this 😀 😀 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-598_18710

And before it looked like this…

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-103_18244

No Home Sweet Home page, I’m really behind on those >_<So my old bed was ok but it really didn’t match the rest of the changes I’d made to the bedroom. Meeeeh.VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-105_18246

You need:

  • Plastic board, I used 4 sheets
  • Pillow cases/fabric
  • Stuffing/old pillow
  • Buttons
  • Glue gun
We rent so obviously I couldn’t screw anything to the walls nor could I afford a new bed frame so instead I made one that just slotted in.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-309_18421

This is the kind of plastic board I used, it was from Bunnings.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-313_18425

I taped it all together into one big piece.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-314_18426

And cut it down so it was the right width and height to slot in behind the bed.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-316_18428

Then James and I sat down on the bed and traced around ourselves to work out how big I needed to make the curve so we could still lean on it comfortably.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-321_18433

We filled them in to be terrible drawings of ourselves… because we’re awesome.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-325_18437

Then we added in some love messages because we’re smoopy like that. And now when I lean against the headboard I always think about how much I love him!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-326_18438

So classy!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-323_18435

Aaaaaaanyway….

I drew on the design of the headboard making sure to leave room for James’ abs.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-329_18441

And the other side too.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-330_18442

Then I cut it out.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-332_18444

To save time later I drew the placement of where the buttons would eventually go. To make sure they were even I made a grid with a fancy thing called a ruler 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-334_18446VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-333_18445

Then I poked holes through with a pair of scissors.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-336_18448

Now for the design! We managed to get a doona (duvet) cover for $40 on sale at Target and it came with pillow cases. I wanted different pillow cases so I decided to use them on the headboard instead. Luckily the pattern matched up.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-338_18450

I opened them out so there was enough fabric to cover the whole thing. It didn’t reach the bottom but that really didn’t matter because it would be covered up by the actual bed.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-340_18452

Now it was time for the fun part: pillow stuffing.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-344_18456

I emptied an old pillow all over the plastic.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-346_18458

And hot glued it in place. I didn’t have too much stuffing so when I have money for more I’ll be buying some and opening it up and restuffing.

Kinda looks like a big cloud 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-347_18459

Once it was fluffy I laid out the fabric and hot glued it along the bottom to the plastic.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-354_18466

I then made sure there were no wrinkles and slowly went around the edge hot gluing it around the back side. It was very important to pull it tight. It was also important not to burn myself. I only managed to do one of those things though.

While gluing the edges I made sure to put stuffing over them too so the fabric didn’t show the sharp edges of the plastic.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-359_18471

Taadaaa…

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-360_18472

It started looking more like something useful at this point! And James said he doubted I could make it work!!!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-365_18477

And the back. I reinforced it with some off cuts to make sure it didn’t bend.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-366_18478

Close ups of glue…

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-371_18483

And this is it slotted in the bed:

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-472_18584

The last step is to add in the buttons. At first I tried to make my own buttons by covering more plastic but that was extremely tedious so instead I got off my butt and bought some nicer ones 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-592_18704

To hold them in place at the back I used some cardboard off cuts cut like this. I threaded each button, stitched it through the hole leaving the ends both out the back of the hole then tied them around the piece of cardboard so they were kept in place. Hard to explain but it works. It’s very important to keep the buttons as tight as possible so they make nice dents in the fabric.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-594_18706

Like this:

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-595_18707

The buttons pucker the fabric through the padding.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-597_18709

And that’s it!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-602_18714

I am extremely happy with how this turned out. While it’s not the most professional thing in the world it brightens the room up beautifully, matches all my new decorating and it was extremely cheap.

What do you guys think? I think the Home Sweet Home project is starting to come along nicely~

Needle Felting! Dog, Fox and Cute Brooch Tutorial

I’ve been needle felting again 😀

Here’s the little scottie dog I made and below it I’ll show you how I made a little bunny charm.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-529_18641VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-532_18644

Heehee with the fox so cute!VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-536_18648So here’s the finished charm, I originally got the idea for a charm like this from a video on youtube which (even though I spent a long time looking today) I can longer find, the girl made a really pretty necklace out of needle felted balls and flowers. If you’ve happened to see the video please send me the link so I can add it here! *Edit* Reece let me know the video is here! YAY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgqWY0aYVFAphoto[2]

I really love felting when it’s incorporated into jewellery with other mediums.

Start with a ball of green, I mixed a couple of greens for the one I wanted.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-141_18282

I made it small enough to fit snugly into the little plastic base.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-142_18283

And hot glued it firmly.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-143_18284

Then it was just a matter of  adding a design. I chose a bunny because… well they’re damn cute!

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-146_18287

It took me a while to understand how to shape it well but now I want to try more felting embroidery like this.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-147_18288

Some little flowers around the bunny and that’s it! Now it just needs a brooch backing or something similar.

photo[2]photo[1]photo

Of course the downside of this craft is that everything even remotely close to it looks furry like this.

-Needle-Felting-288

So if you don’t separate the roving properly you’ll be breathing in fibre all night >_< Totally worth the time to be gentle for the best results because it’s such a cute craft!

Cleaning Your Make Up Brushes With Baking Soda

I hate cleaning make up brushes. Well I hate cleaning most things, but I’m especially lazy when it comes to make up brushes. It’s such an important thing but it takes so long to properly clean them >_<

So this is the method I use when I’m doing a proper clean.

I use baking soda for cleaning brushes that have been used with just powder and a little mild shampoo for those used with foundations or anything liquidy. I’ve been wanting to try the vinegar method for that too so it’s on the shopping list.

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-797_18917

While we’re here I thought I’d show you the main brushes I use in case anyone’s interested.VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-801_18921Top: FoundationMiddle: Blush

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-808_18928

So why do I use baking soda and is it suitable for you too?

Baking soda is awesome for cleaning a whole lot of things. I always have a supply of it because I also use it in place of shampoo. I know it doesn’t bother my skin or face in the same way that some other products do because I already use it on my hair. If you have any allergies or sensitivities be very careful and consult a doctor before committing to putting something on your face. Patch testing is good too.

It’s also extremely cheap at around $1.50 a box. It may or may not be suitable for you to use on your brushes. Soaking is always risky with brushes because if they are not well made it can loosen the glue used to hold the bristles in and therefore cause shedding. If your brushes shed already I wouldn’t recommend soaking them. I prefer soaking to other methods because I feel like it cleans better but honestly that’s probably just a mental thing haha!

So first thing is to fill a small container with warm water and adding a couple of teaspoons of the baking soda. Mix it around but don’t worry if it doesn’t completely dissolve.

One by one add a brush to the water and swoosh it around in the liquid. Make sure to get all of the bristles wet, you’ll probably start seeing powders and pigments coming out.

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-813_18933

The water looks pretty gross after a few brushes!

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-815_18935

Tip the container out and refill it with fresh warm water. Add some more baking soda and leave the brushes to soak for 20 minutes or so. This is when I usually clean my foundation brushes.

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-816_18936

Again this may or may not be suitable for your brushes.

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-819_18939

Once they have soaked I give each brush a quick run under clean water and make sure there’s no more dirt there with my fingers.

VioletLeBeaux-How-To-Clean-Make-Up-Brushes-823_18943

Smooth the bristles into shape again and squeeze out any water.

Leave them to dry completely  and you’ve got nice clean brushes ready to be used! I always leave this for a night when I know I won’t need them the next day so they can dry naturally. Some people will dry with a hair dryer to use right away but I don’t like that because it can loosen the glue as well as causing the bristles to dry out of shape.

That’s it! Clean brushes very cheap and easily 😀

Hello and welcome to Friday video number 2.
Today I’m gong to be talking about using baking soda as shampoo.
So baking soda.
Firstly, is baking soda the same as baking powder?
No. Not the same thing at all, only use baking soda also known as bicarb soda.
I use mckensie’s because it’s the cheapest one. You really don’t need to use much each time so for $1.50 you’ll probably get a whole month or more’s worth.
So step by step, how do you actually use it as shampoo?
#1 don’t use shampoo obviously.
Instead of shampoo you would get a little cup of water. I use the lid from James’ shaving cream. Put a couple of spoons in there and then fill the rest up with warm water.
Then I mix it around with my finger until it’s mostly disolved and put it through your hair.
Massage it to the roots like your would a normal shampoo and make sure to get it really close to the roots because that’s where most of the oil and grease is.
Then I leave it on there for a couple of minutes, maybe 3 minutes? I don’t really have a clock in my shower so.
Once I’m satisfied that my hair is clean I wash it out.
So that’s really it.
Afterwards if you want to you can use a conditioner. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t.
And if I do, I avoid the roots because again that’s usually where my hair gets oily.
Using the baking soda took me a while to get used to because it really doesn’t feel like shampoo.
And honestly until you get out of the shower and completely dry your hair it doesn’t feel clean, not even a little bit.
When it goes in it’s kind of grippy, I guess is the word, like when you rub two pieces of velvet together and all of the little fibres catch on each other.
When you shampoo you get a lather, this doesn’t lather at all. Also when you shampoo your hair and you dry it it had that light airy feeling, you know you feel like you’re in a Pantene commercial and you’re flipping your hair around and you’ve got a big fan blowing in your direction to get the perfect hair flick off to the side.
This isn’t like that.
Once you dry your hair it feels amazing.
It’s really soft and smooth. The texture of my hair feels a lot better now than when I was using shampoo.
I could totally do the commercial with the fan and the wind blowing.
It takes a bit longer to dry than traditional shampoo, I imagine it’s because that has special ingredients to quicken the drying time or whatever and this is just baking soda, nothing fancy.
And that’s pretty much it.
With baking soda I don’t seem to was as often because it doesn’t seem to need it.
I think that’s probably to do with the fact that some shampoos strip the natural oils out of your hair and that’s stuff you want in there.
So your scalp maybe overcompensates and makes extra. Again I’m not an expert so I haven’t no idea the science behind this, I just know it works for me.
This seems a bit more gentle though and I don’t have to wash as often.
As I mentioned in my previous video on using it as dry shampoo, there were a lot of comments asking whether it was the same as using talcum powder.
Or baby power. Yes and no. It’s the same in that they do both get the job done.
But when you wash it out it comes out a lot easier than talcum

Extreme Make Over- Shoe DIY Tutorial Edition!

This shoe make over was a multi step process, in fact it took me around a month of doing part of it then forgetting the rest to actually complete them!
VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70741_18849

Worth it thought because they are pretty damn cute!

VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70740_18848 This is how they started out life: VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-60727_17691

They were cast offs from my Mum who bought them but decided they didn’t fit very well. I’m not so big on snake skin pattens or brown so I thought I could use them to experiment with new ideas. They were completed in 3 steps: 1. Painting 2. Glitter Soles 3. Decoration. You need:

  • Shoes
  • Fabric paint/puff paint
  • Glitter
  • PVA or fabric glue
  • Paint brush
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue
First thing to do is paint the entire shoe. I decided to try out puff paint that I had left over from window decorations.
VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-60729_17693
It worked really well but took several coats.

VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-60735_17699 Having such a sheer colour was actually good because it was easy to get the colour I wanted. The snake skin pattern still showed through in a really interesting way too so I didn’t keep going to make it opaque. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-60807_17771 I used 3 coats and left it to dry overnight between each. Next up the glitter soles. These techniques have been all over the internet recently and Wookie Wife did a fantastic version of it over on her blog with bright blue glitter that looks amazing! Anyway the basic idea is the same thing I did with the red glitter sneakers except that I was out of PVA so I used fabric glue. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70400_18512 Add the glitter to a container and add a good helping of glue. The more glitter you use the longer it will take to dry but the less coats you have to do. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70404_18516 Mix it all into a paste. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70405_18517 Paint the paste all over the soles of your shoes! VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70406_18518 You can tape off the edges if you want but it’s fairly easy to stay in the lines. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70409_18521 When it’s dry it looks like this… VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70427_18539 You can do the entire sole if you want but I figured it was a bit of a waste of glitter and I wanted to keep as much grip on the toes as possible because they are slightly too big for me already. Obviously you need to do the other shoe too XD VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70431_18543VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70435_18547 Now this step is important. Both the fabric glue and the pink puff pant dry with a slightly sticky texture, if you don’t seal them in somehow they will pick up every speck of dirt on the streets and the finish will become darker and dull. To get in before the dirt does just lightly dust them with some translucent make up finishing powder. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70439_18551 I used a make up brush that I was planning on washing that night anyway. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70441_18553 Because it’s translucent it doesn’t dull the finish at all but it protects them from having dirt stick there. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70445_18557VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70446_18558 Now they’re pretty cute but they needed something else. I decided to use up some thick ribbon that came on a present. VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70727_18835 A couple of bows and some hot glue later they were finished! VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70729_18837 I have to say they have come pretty damn far from their original form and I love them! VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70730_18838 They are low enough to be comfy and the pattern showing through the pink makes them so much more interesting! VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70733_18841VioletLeBeaux-Painted-Shoes-Tutorial-Glitter-70738_18846 What do you guys think?
