Snow White And The Evil Queen – Melbourne Snapshots
I found a bunch of photos of photos from an expedition that Celina, Tobias, James and I did to film her Snow White video. Behind the scenes for the win! Seriously, go watch that video btw, it is awesome!

So evil…
Mostly I took photos and painted while Celina filmed. I was testing out the new FujiFilm XF1 camera that day.
It was a great camera but the opening mechanism wasn’t so great and somehow all of my photos were erased when it froze so I couldn’t even finish the review ;_; Really cute and great quality photos though!
I’m smiling here but I was crying when I discovered that all of my photos were gone later!
I borrowed James’ camera so I could do some macro photography (this was before I had my own lens) of all the tiny bits of nature in the park.

James and I have been eating a bit more healthily so we decided to try Vietnamese food, it was yummy!
The healthy thing only lasts so long… french toast with white chocolate > : D
The evenings have been beautiful, I love this time of year. It’s still weird to me that the sun goes down at like 9pm but I really enjoy walking in the evening.

Spring Green House At QV- Snapshots
We should kick this week’s snapshots off with Miss Lottie!

She hasn’t been featured much here lately other than in the background of craft posts but she makes such a great crafting buddy! In this photo we’re working on the embroidery that would NEVER END.
The council have been doing so much construction around the city lately. I’m hoping it’s actually for a good reason because it’s been quite inconvenient when they block off entire roads. Fun to take photos of though.
At QV there was a Spring green house which was SO much fun. It was full of flowers and you could have tea AND cake for just $5!
Depending on the day they had different events there, we went on the butterfly enclosure day.
I really wanted to go in but it was full of screaming kids 🙁
The tea and cupcakes were really yummy though.
I felt very inspired to make my house prettier! I wonder if I could do hanging globes and balls from out fire sprinklers? >_>
My outfit that day, apparently it was so nice I felt like spinning…
James and I have been exploring the city more. It’s nice to go on photography walks with him because he looks for big shots while I look for small details. He took a photo of this whole building but I was more interested in the cool gate. Made me wonder if the building was named after someone who’s name started with K. Then I mostly fantasised about having a building named after me. How sweet would that be?
Now it’s warming up more there are little pockets of Spring showing up in the strangest places. In the spirit of exploring we went down a random lane way and found a super hipster-ish cafe. In all the other places I’ve been, it’s dangerous and scary to go down dark alleys. In Melbourne, all the cool hipster places are down dark alleys XD
Apparently in our unsafe scary places, we glue buttons to walls.
I’ve been wearing white eyeliner a lot lately too which is really growing on me!
On the complete opposite side of things, I tried TGI Fridays for the first time. James tried to creep in on all of my camwhoring shots. Not cool James! As payback, here is a shot of you looking constipated. Suck it!
The only real interesting thing about that is this delicious cheesecake drink. Holy crap it was sweet but also yummy!
So really the most important thing you should take away from this post is that strawberry cheesecake drink is yummy but way too sweet to drink all in one sitting.

How To Plant An Awesome Window Box Garden – Home Sweet Home
Well Home Sweet Home continues! Definitely not as fast as it was in the beginning of the year but we completed our next big project: Home Sweet Home garden!

James and I had toyed with the idea of making window boxes and growing flowers and herbs in small pots for a few years but we were always turned off by the cost and the fact that I have a track record of killing everything green I touch. I even made us a fake window box so we could enjoy the idea of flowers without the effort. That window box was awesome and other than being a little bit dirty, it was exactly the same a year later as when I put it out there. Winner! Anyway, off we went to The Reject Shop and Daiso and way over-bought on supplies. We didn’t end up having enough potting mix so we did a second trip and bought a lot more tiny pots too. I can’t say no to cute pots!
Basically all you really need for this project is potting mix, a window box and seeds but James was really into it so we also bought a lot of matching accessories etc too. It was a really fun way to spend an afternoon putting it all together!
We began with a pre packaged strawberry kit.
The basic premise is the same for all of them: 1. Line the bottom of the pots with empty tea bags so dirt doesn’t fall out of the holes. (Not necessary if you don’t live in an apartment.) 2. Fill the pot with potting mix. 3. Add fertiliser. We used Blood and Bone which sounds super gross but is apparently very good for plants. Eww. 4. Mix the fertiliser through the top 5cm and wet the dirt the appropriate amount for the particular seeds. It should say on the back of the packet how wet they need to be.
5. Sprinkle the seeds in and poke them down into the dirt. Seeds need to be under at different depths depending on the plant so refer to your packet again for this.
That particular one was a big strawberry making kit. I don’t suggest growing strawberries, they take FOREVER and are really fussy. Ours still haven’t even sprouted so I’m considering just replacing them with some other pre-grown plants from Bunnings. I did that once when we were living in Brisbane, but they may or may not have died due to neglect… Then James brought them back to life! But then I killed them again. I’m so glad Lottie asks for food and water and doesn’t just sit there and die like a stupid strawberry plant.
Before we started filling the big window box, James poked holes through the plastic so we could put the hooks in. You can just place the box on the hooks but seeing as we’re very high up I wanted to be extra sure it wasn’t going to fall on someone below.
If you’re going to try this out make sure to buy potting mix not just regular dirt as it apparently is blended for use with potted plants rather than just outside plants.
Lottie wanted to help put the dirt into the big one. I’m just imagining her thinking “OMG our house smells like outside!”.
We picked out the plants to put in the big window box alternating between herbs/food and flowers. The smaller other window boxes are both also flowers and then all of the little pots inside are a mix of all the left over seeds.
Lottie has been really into the garden in general actually, she likes to sit and stare at them at the window. Sometimes there are a few little flies around them which she chases too, it’s so cute.
Then it was just a matter of actually planting them!
And of course giving them the first drink of water.
I used MT Tape and some blank name plates from Daiso to make little signs for each pot.
After that was all done we hung the big boxes off the balcony.
And I put the white fencing back up again.
We left all of the inside pots next to the window so they could get some sun and fresh air easily.
It was just a matter of waiting then… I really hate waiting. During the wait I regretted buying seeds and wished I had just bought actual plants and repotted them >_> First to sprout was the radish.
Then chives…
Gypsophila…
And everything else followed soon after!
Almost all of them have sprouted now, we’re just waiting on Lemon Balm, Snapdragons, Chilli, Strawberries and Swan River Daisies. All of those ones have much longer germinations times though and the wait is killing me!
The Coriander is the tallest out of everything at the moment, it looks like a mini forest!
My personal favorite is the radish though and it’s the quickest to grow, the entire area is covered now!
We’re waiting for the little pots to grow big enough that they can be put all around the apartment and really brighten things up.
I love waking up and seeing the progress that all of the plants have made! I think it will be really exciting once they get big enough to cook with!

Flowers and Foods – Melbourne Snapshots
This is a nature themed Snapshots! Well nature and food… I like food.
Favorite cupcakes ever are from Cupcake Central in Melbourne Central, the guys there are always SO nice.

I’m pretty sure it makes them taste better.
I’m not really sure why but I’ve been a bit obsessed with taking really low angle photos of tiny bits of nature lately I think really should hurry up and buy a macro lens so these don’t look quite as awkward.
Why yes, my phone does totally sparkle like this normally, why do you ask?
At QV there’s a pop up tea house which is super cute. I want to go!
I love that it’s finally the season for daisies. For some reason they seem like the happiest flowers.
We took a night walk for groceries and I played around with some long exposures. James is a very patient teacher XD I love that everyone in this shot looks like a ghost except for that one couple.
This shot is like ultimate Melbourne, architecture and a ghost tram ^_^
Bonus photo: Someone left this book near our apartment on the ground and so like a true hipster I had to take a photo. I think the only thing that could make this more of a terribly cliche hipster shot is if it was in black and white.

Tullip Festival – Melbourne Snapshots
Before we went off to Switzerland we visited the Tesselaar Tulip Festival. Ultimate photo opportunity!

The problem with ultimate photo taking opportunities is that you turn around and your whole group looks like this. How epic are the poses Tobias makes while he shoots?
Celina and I tried making cute poses together…
But for some reason we just ended up looking like we were in a buddy cop movie.
Seriously epic posing.
This beautiful sun filled photo was unfortunately the only sun we got all day. The weather was TERRIBLE.
It was freezing and muddy and after seeing the fields it started pouring rain so we had to leave. We thought we’d seen the whole festival but looking at the map later we noticed that the rest of the event was behind a hill which we hadn’t seen… we only ended up seeing 1/4 of it >_< This is why you should read the maps they hand you on the way in people! But on the plus side it was really fun and how pretty do the pictures look?
I’m trying to edit this so the entire post isn’t the same photo of flowers over and over again… but they all kind of look the same after a while.
I also discovered that my camera has a mode which adds sparkles. This is me using that mode for it’s intended purpose ie. subtly :

This was the last shot before the rain started hammering down and we ran for the car! Poor PastViolet in the photo, you don’t even know how cold and wet you’re about to get!
All in all it was actually a really fun day out! It’s funny but even the most terrible Melbourne weather can be made better if you have great company! And next time I’m going to read the damn map! |
