Classic Braid Bun Hairstyle Instructions
Today I’ll be showing how I do a basic braided bun.
It looks a lot harder than it is but a basic knowledge of braiding is needed for this one.
Start by taking a small section of hair at the top.
I’ll show you from the back so you can actually see what’s going on.
Braid the hair around half way down and then continue plaiting until it reaches the neck,
Tie off with a hair tie.
Plait the rest of the hair loosely.
Sometimes it can be easier to do this over the shoulder if you have long hair.
Roll it up into a ball and pin it to the head at the neck.
Pull the plait so it loosens with your fingers.
The hair tie prevents it from coming undone but it will be very loose.
Roll the ends of it underneath and pin it over where the first plait was pinned.
The loose braid will fall around it to become a very stylish updo.
All done!
You can see it gives quite a lot of volume.
I hope this was a useful video, please check out the blog post linked in the description for more information and a photo tutorial.
Thanks so much for watching!

A couple of years ago I did a boot customisation. I took some gigantic boots and cut them down to be nice and fitted. You can see the original boots customisation tutorial over here.
It’s time for the sequel 😀 😀 😀
This time I took some poorly fitted weird boots my Mum was getting rid of and turned them into cute ankle boots!
I made these…
Out of these…
I love them now! Ok let’s get into it 😀
Things I used:
- Old boots
- Faux fur trim from an old jacket hood
- Chain and some charms
- Felt
- Needle and thread
So let’s get into it!
First I pulled up the cover part so I could see what I was dealing with. Easy enough, it was all fabric except for the bottom part which was faux leather.
So I cut off the top.
This was quite a cute shape but I had the idea in my head to make the front more the shape of a court shoe.
So I snipped it down into a “V” shape.
To finish off the raw edges I cut strips of black felt and stitched the around the edges.
They folded over to hide the edges.
Done:
Next I removed the faux fur trim around the old hood.
Done!
Then I stitched it around the edge of the shoe tops.
Then it was just about accessories!
I stitched two rows of chain coming from the fur.
Then added the crosses in. This is is much darker than my usual style but I really like it at the moment!
The charms are easily removable too so I could switch them out with something pinker later when the mood strikes me ^_^
DONE! It really didn’t take very long and it was quite fun to do.
Different from my usual style but very fun!
Now time to wear them!
What do you guys think?
Boot modification version 2 success! |

This is a really quick video on how I do basic braids. It’s not really that comprehensive but it’s the basics! I might do another one which is more detailed if anyone’s interested. .

Very Quick Basic Braid Hairstyle Instructions
Today I’ll show you how I do a basic braid.
This is easier to pick up if you already know how to plait.
This won’t be a comprehensive video, this is just a quick video to show the way I do it.
Brush your hair backwards.
Grab a small section at the top.
Divide into three even sections.
Plait it by taking the right section and placing it over the middle section.
Place the left section over the middle then.
Then the right section over the middle.
When you are about to plait the next section from the right, add to it by taking another small piece of hair on that side and including it with the original piece as you plait.
From this point, every time you move a section of hair to the other side, add a little more of the loose hair from that side.
Make sure the extra pieces you’re adding are nice and even so the finish is neat.
You’ll soon be able to see that it looks like a regular plait but with all of the side pieces added in.
I may do another one of these videos with some different camera angles as it’s a little hard to see what’s going on.
Difficult to film as fingers are always in the way.
The further down you go, the easier it is to see the pattern and understand what’s going on.
It’s good to try doing this on a friend before you try on yourself so you can see exactly what your fingers are doing and where they need to be.
Once there’s no more hair left to add in, you should plait down the rest of the way down.
You could also try a fishtail braid here for a more interesting finish.
My arms aren’t long enough so I have to do it around the side.
And that’s it, once you understand the basic mechanics of how the hair fits together it’s very easy to do all kinds of crazy braids.
I hope this was a useful video.

by VioletLeBeaux | Sep 4, 2012 | Nail-Art-Tutorials, Nails, Tutorial
Once every couple of years I go through a nail growing kick. If I don’t have acrylics I always have short nails. Partially because I have naturally weak nails, partially because I am terrible with fidgeting/biting them and partially because I hate the idea that when one of them breaks I have to get rid of all of them.
Ok the real reason is that I have no self control. Like at all. None. Not even a little bit.
But I really want to grow them out again. I thought maybe if I make myself accountable to all of you guys I might actually do it!! In fact if any of you guys want to grow out your nails too we could all be accountable to each other. We can share tips, blog about it and measure our progress etc 😀
So who’s with me?!
Leave me a comment if you want to join in and maybe we can do a weekly progress check. I can link any posts you make about it and do a heap of nail art too.
I’m going to grow them out starting right now, I’m feeling inspired!
As some more inspiration, here are some photos of nail art from the last time I grew out my nails. I was actually pretty successful so here’s hoping we can all do it this time!
My favorite look from last time:
For Lunar New Year:
They got to be around this length before one of them snapped and I cut them all off:
I’m totally on a mission now, no more biting, no more fiddling and no more poor cuticle care!
From now on only nail polish, hand cream and awesome looking fingers.
I think with all of us trying to do this together I can develop will power 😀 Leave me a comment if you’re going to take up the challenge too!! |
by VioletLeBeaux | Sep 2, 2012 | Craft, Storage/Utility-Tutorials, Tutorial
This craft project was really inspired by James. Our conversation went something like this:
Violet: I have all this string, what should I do with it?
James: *inappropriate suggestion not fit for the internet*
Violet: -_-‘ I meant a craft project!
James: That could be considered a craft project…
Violet: What about something for around the home?
James: How about some kind of nautical home accessories? Like to hold flowers or candles or something?
Violet: Holding candles in flammable string might not be a great idea but sure let’s see how that goes!
This was the pile of string I was trying to be inspired by:
Now if this had been a particularly lazy day I would have said “I know, I’ll make a scale model of the flying spaghetti monster. Oh look, I’m done!”… but I wanted something slightly more challenging. I thought of doing something bathroom-ish because that’s where nautical rope themed things seem to end up but it really didn’t fit how I wanted my bathroom to end up looking. In the end I settled on a basic container which could be used for pretty much whatever.
The process is extremely simple:
Get string, make a spiral out of the string and hot glue as you go.
The finished base:
Once you have the base make a spiral going up. If you’re concerned it’s not looking straight you can put a cup or something in the middle to hold the shape better while you glue.
I did two strands at once because my rope was all tangly.
Done. Yep that’s it.
And once finished the only problem was that it still really didn’t go with anything in our house XD
But if your house is more this kind of theme, it’s an extremely quick project to do!
You could hold pens in it or something?
And to please James here’s what it looks like with a candle. Very pretty but also very flammable and, you know, probably melty because of the hot glue so I don’t suggest doing this at all!
I should have stuck with the spaghetti monster XD |

One of my favorite Korean restaurants, Gami Chicken, has the most delicious kimchi pancakes. They are quite expensive though so one day during a massive craving, James decided to try and make some at home.
They turned out quite delicious! This recipe is a combination of some he found online and some from the Korean cooking books we had.You need:
- 1 cup kimchi
- 1/2 an onion
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of sugar
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/3 cup water
We found kimchi at the local Asian grocery store for $4 a jar. I wasn’t really planning to use it for anything else so it was fairly cost effective. Celeste is always telling me to try making my own though which I really should some time! One of my favorite TV shows at the moment is a Korean show called “We Got Married” and on the show quite a few of the couples have tried making kimchi. Their results are usually quite hilarious so for now I think I’ll stick to the $4 tubs XD.
So step one was cut up the kimchi so it was quite fine.
I don’t like spicy things so James drains the juice out of the kimchi so that this version is extra mild. If you like spicy things you can add more juice. If you add juice make sure to add less water.
Next the onion was finely chopped.
Salt and sugar in too.
And flour and water.
Mix it all up until it forms a thick batter.
Put some oil in a pan on a high heat and pour the batter in.
Smoosh it all out so it forms a flat pancake. The batter is quite sticky, so this can be a little difficult.
Let it cook in the oil until the sides crispy up. Take a peak at the bottom to make sure it doesn’t burn!
Flip it over and it should be golden. Flipping can be pretty hard, and if you are doing the one, two, three cartoon pancake flipping method then make sure that all the oil has been absorbed by the pancake 😉 You don’t want that sucker to splash hot oil everywhere when it lands back in the pan!
Cook the other side until it matches and it’s ready to serve!
This made a pretty huge pancake so I ate half and saved the rest for later. You could probably make two with the amount of batter we made, but it’s easier to cook it all in one go.
So delicious, crispy, really quick and easy to make for lunch! Yum!
What do you guys normally do for lunch? I feel like I’m always rushing because I work while I eat most of the time so I don’t cook as much as I’d like to >_< |
