How To Use Pastels For Temporary Hair Colour
Hope you’re having a good day it’s time for another hair tutorial.
Have you ever wondered how you could get temporary, bright, cute hair colours without having to worry about the commitment?
Oh my god I sound like an informercial.
Well there are several ways to do it but my favorite answer is using soft art pastels.
Please don’t use oil pastels for this. Oil pastels and soft pastels are not the same thing.
Soft pastels have a chalky feeling where as oil pastels are obviously really oily.
So you’re not going to get the same effect.
The pastels I’m using are from Daiso and they were $2.80.
The hardest thing about this tutorial is picking the colour.
For the actual technique, all you need to do is separate the hair you want to colour.
Put a piece of cardboard or paper under it to protect the hair underneath.
And draw the pastel on.
You can make it as bright as you want just by drawing more on. Super easy!
Before you ask, yes it does work on dark hair.
If you have dark hair you may need to apply a bit more to get the colour as bright.
Keep in mind also that artists pastels come in different grades so make sure to look for a soft pastel that is really pigmented.
Don’t forget to do the underneath and the ends as well.
So far I haven’t experienced any damage using this technique on myself or others.
If you are concerned or you’ve had hair damage in the past, I would always suggest that you go to a hairstylist and get them to look over your hair first just in case.
Once you are finished with the colour, add some hair spray to seal it in.
Then just brush it through with the rest of the hair and you’re good to go.
Afterwards you can just shampoo your hair and get rid of the colour completely.
It’s a great way to have crazy colours on the weekend if you’re working in an office or still going to school with strict dress codes.
Now that I’ve tried it with some different pinks, I think I want to try it with blues and purples.
I think that would be super cute.
I hope this was a useful video, good luck if you give it a try.
Make sure you check out the blog post linked in the description, there’s a photo tutorial there you can download as well.
And thanks so much for watching, bye!

How To Do Temporary Hair Colour With Pastels

It’s been a really crazy week and between everything else I’ve been getting the next batch of these hair tutorials ready. Today’s tutorial is something that might help those of you thinking of dying your hair a crazy colour. I get quite a few comments and emails every saying “I want to do my hair like yours but I can’t because of school/work/something else”. Well this is a great way to see if it looks good before you commit or do it for the weekend and then wash it out before Monday!

The video version of this will be added as soon as I finish editing!

Let’s do it!

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial66

So you want to try out crazy colours but without the commitment? Using artist’s chalk pastels is perfect for this! I’ve done previous posts about using Illamasqua’s Pigments in the same way too if you happen to have some of those.DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial28

They’re cheap and easy to use and the colour sits very naturally in the hair without being crunchy or gross like some other temporary colours. Once it’s in and set you can just style as usual!

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial35

The hardest part is deciding what colour to choose! I picked a purplish pink a bit darker than my regular pink so you could see it a bit better in my hair. I think I want to try doing some purple and blue streaks in my pink too!

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial37

So you need a pastel and also a piece of cardboard so you can cover the other hair up.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial40

Section the piece of hair you want to colour.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial43

Put the cardboard under it to protect the other hair.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial46

Then just draw the pastel over all of the hair.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial49

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial52

Don’t forget the ends.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial57

And the underneath as well.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial61

Give it a quick blast with the hairspray to seal it all in.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial60

Then just give it a brush through so it sits well with the rest of your hair and looks natural.

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial62

OMG IT WORKED! And when you’re done being pink/purple/blue/whatever you can just wash your hair and be back to normal!

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial64

And yes before you ask, you can do this on dark hair too. Pastels are generally opaque so as long as you pick a nice bright colour you should be good to go!

DIY-Temp-Hair-Color-Tutorial65

Go forth and enjoy being as crazy and creative as you want to with the knowledge you can wash it all out in the morning!

How To Decoupage Shelves – Home Sweet Home

When I did the Home Sweet Home reveals in early January I promised to show how I decoupaged all of the ugly black plastic shelves we had. It’s extremely easy to do though a little time consuming and all you need is some pretty paper, PVA glue and water.

This was the finished result of my shoe shelf:

well-organised-craft-room-4692

It started out life looking like this:

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY27

I love these shelves, they really saved us storage-wise because they were only $10, fit in the wardrobe and are strong, easily stacked and moved so you can do pretty much anything.

Watch out for stray puppies trying to eat your supplies. These stray craft eating puppies are getting to be a serious problem 😉

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY29

Mix up some glue and water in a shallow bowl. I used around half water, half glue but your solution may depend on how thick your glue is. Basically you want it to be very watery but still white.

Tear up pieces of pretty paper. I used wrapping paper that matched the stuff on our bedroom doors but as long as it’s not super thin you can use pretty much anything. Tear up lots of different sizes and shapes now before you get glue everywhere, much harder to tear paper when you’ve got wet gluey fingers!

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY30

Dip a piece of paper into the glue so it soaks through.

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY31

Then wrap it around the shelf. Repeat over and over again with pieces of paper until you have covered the entire set of shelves. Make sure to overlap the pieces too, this will give it extra strength. Don’t try to match up patterns, just make everything random, the key to it looking good is selecting a paper which has a patter that can blend well that isn’t too busy.

Because the base of this is plastic you may have trouble getting the first couple of pieces to stick, I started on the columns and wrapped the paper around so it stuck to itself. This formed a base which I then worked out from.

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY32

I did all of the easier parts first then ripped up some much smaller pieces of paper to go over all of the details

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY34

Let the whole thing dry thoroughly then cover it all with another coat of the glue/water mix for extra strength. Easy!

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY36

Up close you can see the way the pieces just blend together.

DSC_2935

Much cuter than the plain old black anyway and it’s quite cheap to do something like this!

Decoupage-Shelves-DIY37

And there you have it! Now I just need to get some more paper to do the couple of shelves that are left over!

I’m Perfection Speckled Eyeliner – Illamasqua Transformation

I’m still catching up from our weekend in Canberra so I thought it would be nice to kick off the week with a video of a Transformation I took part in for Illamasqua’s new collection. I was invited last week so I could have a look through the new collection I’MPERFECTION. The premise of this collection is to celebrate all of the things we generally try to hide as imperfections.

Here is the video we made of the day, hope you enjoy!

I could really see myself wearing the speckle eyeliner again and there’s an extremely neat 1960’s style look using the b/w combination in the brochure which I want to recreate.

illamasqua-Im-Perfection-2

The whole collection is pretty awesome but the things I really liked from the collection were the Speckle Polishes and the Precision Ink eyeliners. The speckle range is supposed to be inspired imperfections on eggs. I’ve been a fan of Precision Ink for quite some time now but seeing the white and black combination really inspired me to try some new looks.

The new Blush Up brush is definitely an interesting concept which I could see helping some people with application but I tend to wear very light rounded blush if any so I couldn’t see myself using it too much.

I LOVE the pink eyebrows, I really want to practice doing this myself so I can have pink eyebrows more often 😀

illamasqua-Im-Perfection-3

Here is a list of what Rebecca used in the Transformation.

  • Matt primer
  • Skin Base #2

  • Loose powder #010
  • Concealer #115
  • Powder Foundation #113

How To Do An Overhead Braid Mini Ponytail – Hairstyle Photo Tutorial

I’m heading off to Canberra today so by the time you guys read this James and I will probably already be on the plane ^_^ I think this is the hairstyle I’ll be wearing today too!

over-head-braid-instructions6013

And here is the video version of the tutorial that I did quite some time ago.

This style requires you to have basic knowledge of how to braid, I’m planning to cover the basics in another upcoming tutorial for those of you who don’t already know.

Start with brushed hair.

over-head-braid-instructions5987

Grab a section at the front of your head starting from just behind the ears.

over-head-braid-instructions5988

Pull it up like this and then tie the rest of the hair out of the way.

over-head-braid-instructions5990

And then flip/brush it over to the side you want the ponytail to end up on.

over-head-braid-instructions5993

Take a very small section of hair just above the ear on one side. Begin the braid using that small section of hair.

over-head-braid-instructions5994

Continue the braid using small loose sections hair hair so it goes over the top of your head from one side to the other. The arrows below indicate the ways the strands of the braid sit on the head. If you want the braid to sit up more and be a bit puffy make sure the sections of hair you use are loose. If you have thinner hair you can use sea salt spray to help give volume.

over-head-braid-instructions5996

When you reach this point stop.

over-head-braid-instructions5997

From the top it will look like this:

over-head-braid-instructions5998

Brush any left over hair up to the top of your head and then tie it all into a ponytail.

over-head-braid-instructions6000

I like my ponytail to sit really vertical so I try to angle the band upwards.

over-head-braid-instructions6001

The pieces of the braids may get messed up while you tie the hair tie so to give it some extra puff you can pull them out a bit once it’s all secure.

over-head-braid-instructions6003

Now just add a pretty accessory like a flower and you’re all good to go!

over-head-braid-instructions6005

From the top:

over-head-braid-instructions6011

This style looks good  straight or curled.

over-head-braid-instructions6007over-head-braid-instructions6008

Hope you guys enjoyed. I’ll be shooting the next set of these tutorial next week when we get back so if there any styles you want me to cover just leave a comment!

Neutral Eye Make Up Instructions!
It’s time for another edition of Morning Make Up where I do my make up and we chat!
And today we’re doing something a little bit different, well different for me anyway: Neutrals!
These are the products and brushes that I’m using today.
Starting of course, with your regular foundation routine.
Today I wore a bronze neutral look so let’s get started!
Clip your hair back. There’s a tutorial on my blog on how to make this particular little velcro clippy.
Apply a nice thick coat of mascara.
Those of you who are observant will probably notice that things are a little bit different in this video.
But let’s get to the make up first.
I’m using a white shimmer pencil just as a highlighter under the brows then smudging it out with a finger.
Then I’m just going to seal it in with a little bit of white shadow.
So what do you guys think of the new set up?
Now that I’ve given the whole house a make over, it seemed a shame not to use it!
I’m giving the whole lid a wash with some light gold shadow here to act as a base for all of the other shadows.
So I’m ditching the backdrop for now and we’re going to try some more tutorials here.
This set up is definitely a little bit different from my old one but hopefully it’s an improvement!
Next I’m using some darker bronze just to give some depth to the outer corner.
I’m applying it in a pointed “C” shape.
