How To Make Cute Cardboard Lanterns

123photo copy

I think this project is one of those ones that pretty much every primary school ever attempts but I thought I would try to update it a bit!

What you need:

  • Old toilet rolls or paper towel rolls cut to a similar size
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun or tape
  • Paper glue/glue stick
  • Scalpel/exacto knife/really sharp knife
  • Tea light candles
  • Pretty paper
  • White paint

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

So the first step is to cover your cardboard roll in pretty paper using the glue stick. Unfortunately this made it really hard to see what I was doing in the photos so I will use a plain roll so you can see things clearly then show the finished paper covered product.

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

So glue the paper securely all over and wrap it around like this. I used an old envelope ^_^

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Ok once your paper is secure and dry it’s time to make the lantern! You can see from where I’ve drawn in pen below where you should cut. The line in the middle is where we will start making the cuts then the two dots are to mark where will eventually put little slits.

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Use your scalpel to make a cut along the first line! Please be very very very careful when using a knife like this!

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Now continue around the tube making more cuts parallel to the first one around 1cm apart. Keep going until you reach where you started.

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Now make small snips around both ends around 1cm long, you should have something like this:

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Next it’s time to fan the whole thing out. Gently push around the middle from the inside.

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Keep pushing and use the ends to smoosh it together…

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Once you push it out you should be able to create a fold and have something like this:

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Now at one end fold all of the little tabbed pieces outwards 😀

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Taadaa!

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

On the other end, fold all the little tabs inwards:

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Use your glue gun or tape to hold them all in place. This is going to form the base which prevents the tea light candle from just falling out the bottom haha XD

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

So from the side it looks like this…

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

And this is what it looks like with the paper. Mine looks pretty dodgy because I was originally planning on painting it so I didn’t think to the the paper on until after it was made >_<

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

If your roll has brand names printed on the inside you can use the white paint to go over them. In fact you could paint it any colour you like! I didn’t bother doing it completely because this was a test run.

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Now pop the tea light candle through the top opening…

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

And you’ve got a lantern!

Toilet Roll Lantern Tutorial

Obviously you should be careful when lighting it as it is made of completely flamable materials but they make very pretty decorations and I can imagine hundreds of them strung up to my roof would look AWESOME!

What do you guys think?

How to Make Perfect Ribbon Roses Craft Tutorial

These little ribbon roses are very cheap to buy in bulk but there are times when the colour you need isn’t available or you can’t find the right size, so i’ll show you how to make them yourself. It’s insanely easy to do as well!

Update! I’ve made a video of the process for those of you who need some help:

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

What you need:

  • Ribbon
  • Needle and thread
  • … that’s it!

Now starting from the outside, roll it in towards the rest of the ribbon…Ribbon Rose TutorialAnd stitch it in place:

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

Now fold the ribbon backwards on a 45degree angle…

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

Roll that around the stem like this…

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

And stitch in place. From the top it looks like this:

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

Fold the ribbon backwards again and keep rolling as you stitch it. This is pretty much how you make the whole thing, keep folding backwards, rolling and stitching.

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

This is a view of how I stitch the bottom as I go…

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

After a while you’ll see the rose starting to form. It can take a little bit of practice to be able to get the petals to sit correctly, the key is to make sure that you don’t wrap it too tightly, you want the petals to fan out not stick around the stem.

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

Once you are happy with the size of the flower then cut off any extra and fold it down toward the stem.

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

And tie it all off…

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

It should look something like this from the side, if you wrap it too tightly it won’t fan out this nicely.

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

All done! Then just attach it to a hair tie and you’ve got a very cute accessory 😀

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

Once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much make them without paying too much attention. This is a great craft project for watching a movie with 😀
I’m using silver ribbon and black thread so you can easily see where I’m stitching. These flowers work best with ribbon where both sides are nice but if use ribbon with different textures on each side it can be quite an interesting effect.

Ribbon Rose Tutorial

First thing, fold down one end at a 45 degree angle and stitch it in place. You should leave a couple of cm at the bottom to form a stem.

How I Made A Beaded Bunny Charm

I love 3D beading, like all of those adorable cell phone charms and things but they look so hard to make! I made a milkshake one but that was with instructions so when I sat down with my beads the other day I was really worried that I would bugger it up!

But I am actually quite proud of the little bunny I ended up with! Apologies in advance for grainy photos, I started this on a whim in the middle of the night so I didn’t think to set everything up!

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

What you need:

  • Seed beads in various colours
  • Needle/thread
  • Medium bead (for the inside of the head)
  • Large bead (for the inside of the body)
  • A couple of crystal beads for the ruffle on the dress

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

First I made the head. I used 2 black beads for the eyes and a pink one for the nose.

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

I threaded the needle then tied it to the large bead.

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Then I threaded 6 clear beads and ran the needle through the large bead again so it was secure:

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

I continued doing this around the whole head and strategically placed the face beads amongst the clear:

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Once the whole thing was covered I pulled my thread to the top. I added around 14 beads and doubled the strand back down and through the middle hole again to for an ear.

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Adorable ear:

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Add a second one and you’ve got a head!

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

I added a small ring of 4 more seed beads to the bottom of the head to form a neck. Then I threaded the large bead on to form the body. I only had a red one this size but I would suggest using something of a similar colour to your beads haha!

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Using the same technique as the head I put row upon row of purple beads from top to bottom until it was all covered.

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Using a string of purple with one clear at the end I added the arms:

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

The I added a skirt to the bottom by threading a triangle of 3 more beads between each of the strands…

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Then I joined those triangles of beads into a frill by adding a crystal bead between each. So running the needle around the edge went: bead bead crystal bead bead crystal bead bead crystal etc

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Lastly I added the legs using clear beads and one purple one on the end to be shoes.

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

After knotting all of the loose threads and hiding them inside the beads I was finished!

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

Pretty damn cute for a first try if I do say so myself ^_^

Bunny Beaded Phone Charm Tutorial

I want to try making lots more of these little things but I’m not sure what to make! What do you guys think, any suggestions?

How To Make Strawberry Shaped Pompoms

After discovering how easy it was to make heart pompoms James suggested the most awesome idea: strawberry pompoms!!

This is what I ended up with on my first try, with a little tweaking it could be perfect 😀

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

What you need:

  • Red yarn
  • White yarn
  • Green yarn
  • Something to make it on, I’m using an eyeshadow palette
  • Small sharp scissors

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Wrap the green yarn around one end of the palette. This is going to form the leaves at the top of the strawberry so only use a bit of yarn and keep it down one end like this:

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Using the white yarn wrap it around the other end of the palette a couple of times:

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Then wrap around a layer of the red until it’s all covered…

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Then wrap the white around a couple more times…Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

and more red…

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Basically you want to keep alternating and layering the white/red until you have a decent amount.

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Pull it off the palette and hold around the middle.

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Tie some yarn around the middle and leave a tail if you want to hang it somewhere.

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Cut all of the loops and you should have something like this:

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Start trimming! Cut the bottom into a point and then cut the rest of the yarn to be uniform.

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

After trimming mine looked like this!

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

Cute!

Strawberry Pompom Tutorial

I want to make a whole pompom garden now hahaha!.

How To Make Fairy Kei Accessories

I’ve been seeing these puffy accessories everywhere lately so I figured I would show you all how easy they are to make 😀 Swimmer and a couple of other brands have them as hair clips, brooches and all kinds of things.

This is how my version turned out:

Puffy Stars Tutorial

What you need:

  • Coat hanger/wire
  • Fluffy yarn (I think the name of this one was flossy or something)
  • Glue
  • Diamantes/small bows/pearls/decorations
  • Pliers
  • Tape

Puffy Stars Tutorial

Take apart the coat hanger…

Puffy Stars Tutorial

And use the pliers to make the shapes you want. I did a star and a  heart.

Puffy Stars Tutorial

Use a piece of tape to hold the ends together…

Puffy Stars Tutorial

Get some yarn and start wrapping it around…

Puffy Stars Tutorial

Keep wrapping and keep wrapping and keep wrapping… and keep wrapping some more until they are really big and squishy like this:

Puffy Stars Tutorial

Hot glue your decorations on in a completely random way and that’s it…

Puffy Stars Tutorial

You can then add on a brooch pin or something on the back to attach it to yourself and that’s all there is to it ^_^

Puffy Stars Tutorial

You can also make bows in the same style by knitting a square out of this yarn and scrunching the middle of it. Add a little ribbon to hold it in place and you’ve got a very cute accessory!

How To Make A Heart Shaped Pompom

Until a week or so ago I had ever even thought of heart shaped pompoms but I saw this at a craft shop and it started my brain working overtime!

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

P1040238 copy

Thing is that they wanted $25 for it *_* and after reading the instructions it basically looked like it just made regular pompoms that you then trimmed into a heart shape. Well I can do that at home for free!

P1040240 copy

My result…

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

There are various ways to make pompoms, when I was a kid we cut 2 cardboard circles and threaded the yarn through. Now that I’m older the novelty of cutting out cardboard circles has worn off so I take the lazy way:

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

What you need:

  • Yarn
  • Scissors/small sharp nail scissors
  • Something hard which is roughly the diameter you want the finished pompom to be, I used an eyeshadow palette you could just use your fingers.

Start wrapping the yarn around the eyeshadow.

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Keep wrapping until you have a decent amount like this:

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Slide the yarn off…

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Hold it like this…

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Use another piece of yarn to tie around the middle tightly or if you want to take the easier way: a thin rubber band. If you want to hang it off something you can leave the piece of yarn long.

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Cut all of the loops…

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

And it will look like this:

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Repeat on the other side and you have a basic pompom!

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Now it’s time to trim it into a heart! Use you scissors to cut the bottom into a basic point.

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Like this…

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Then cut a wedge out of the top to make a heart.

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Now you’ve got the basic shape it’s time to trim with some small sharp scissors until it’s perfect.

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Her you can see I’ve een working on the right side while the left is still long and messy:

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

And done!

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

You might want put down a sheet of paper or something to catch all the fluff that you’re cutting off XD

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Very cute craft project and once you get in the swing of things they don’t take very long to make 😀

Heart Pom Pom Tutorial

Now to think of where to hang them all!
