Ages ago I showed you all how I store my hair accessories. Well my old system didn’t really work with my new bathroom so it was time to get crafting and change it to be more functional.
This is what I started with:
As you can see I have more clips than pins now so I needed to work out how to get more space to put in clips out of the same amount (or less) space. A while ago I added 2 cuts to the middle but it still wasn’t enough. So time to re-think XDI used:
I cut out the middle:
Folded the edges over and glued them to make seams. Laid out a whole bunch of ribbons:
Glued them in place and that was it!
All of the ribbons now form a network of areas that bows, pins or clips can be hung anywhere π
Super simple, super easy and now it is the perfect size and shape for my bathroom. And I didn’t have to buy anything new so yay! What do you guys think? |

I’ve been really loving experimenting with make up and mixing my own colours and things lately so I thought it was about time to make something to keep them all in! You all know how much I love customised stuff so this post is all about how I made my very own make up travel palette!
Celeste forwarded me this video tutorial she found on making one and while I thought his method was clever I didn’t have most of those items so I decided to start from scratch and just do it my own way ^_^
I think there are a lot things that could be improved with how this one turned out but this is basically a base idea and I am planning to to use the techniques I learned in making this one to make an even better version which I will of course post too!
This is my finished product:
All of the eyeshadow colours were mixed and pressed myself as was the lip colour, I’ll show you how I did those after I show you how to make the box!So what I used:
- Old cardboard box
- Felt
- Scissors
- Old eyeshadows and the metal pans they come in
- Glue gun
- Sticky Tape
- Mixing stick
- Hand sanitizer gel
- Old lip sticks
- Velvet Ribbon
- Tea light candles
- Paper towels
- Pliers
So let’s get started already! |
To make the box to keep it all in I use a cut up cardboard box. You need to decide how big you want your finished product to be and decide how many pans of make up you want in there. I decided 6 and measured it out.
Ignore the bits of glue and felt on the cardboard because it used to be a ring box ^_^ Anyway this is what the pieces of my box look like, you can see how it will fit together eventually with the hinged lid…
So tape it all together
You want to leave the hinge tape a little loose so it can swing easily:
Now it’s time to cover the whole thing in fabric using your glue gun to stick it. I used felt because that’s all I had left in my stash. Next time I think I will use something else on the outside but again use felt on the inside. There is no need to cover the bottom of the inside part on the right as that’s where the make up will go ^_^
Notice that on the inside of the lid I cut slashes going from one side to the other, I also only glued it around the outside. The reason for this is that you can use the strips to hold important things such as make up brushes, applicators, false lashes or glue π Very useful!!
Next I glued a ribbon in place on the spine so it could be tied around and hold the hold thing closed with a bow.
Now let’s make the palette to go inside the thing!
I had this old palette that cost me like $4 a long time ago. I didn’t really like any of the colours anymore so it seemed like good craft fodder ^_^
I broke it open and removed all the little trays using pliers. Be careful because they can be sharp!
I put all of the powders into containers in case I ever wanted to mix them later and washed the metal trays so I ended up with this:
Next I cut a piece of cardboard that was the correct size to fit in my box thingy and glued the trays into place ^_^
Now while we’re here at the palette part you should cut out a piece of felt a couple of centimeters bigger than the cardboard. Unfortunately I didn’t get photos of this part but you need to cut holes that are big enough to fit the metals trays snuggly. Basically what you’re doing is making a nice little cover to make it all look pretty and so the trays don’t look so far out of place sticking up so much. So in my case I cut 6 holes… if that makes sense! Don’t glue it on yet though, we’ll fill the trays first.
Now time to mix up the powders π
As a mixing bowl I used the metal bits from empty tea light candles. They are perfect because you don’t have to clean them when you change colours, just throw them out! Also if you make too much you can actually just press the extra powder into them and keep for next time π Just make sure that you clean them well and get rid of any old wax!!
To press your powder you will need the kind of gel hand sanitizer with alcohol so it will evaporate to make it all sticky again.
Put your powder into the candle and add one squirt of sanitizer. Mix it very very well until it forms a paste:
Tip the paste into the metal tray and squish it down with the stick:
Using a piece of paper towel press all of the liquid out with your finger. Be careful to make it nice and flat and smoosh as much liquid out as you can. You can use this same technique to fix cracked/broken eyeshadows, pressed powder, blush and the like, very handy to know!
Taadaa let it dry and that’s it! Repeat with any other colours you want to put in there ^_^
Now I wanted to include a lip colour too so I took some lip sticks I didn’t 100% like the colours of and mixed my own ^_^
First thing I did was add some shimmer dust to my mixing bowl.
Then I cut off pieces of each of the lippies and added them…
Using the pliers I held my pliers over a lit candle to melt the colours together. I mixed it together properly and poured into the tray. To get a nice clean finish on the top I use a lighter to *VERY CAREFULLY* melt the top so it was perfect!
I ended up going with 4 eye shadows, 1 shimmer and 1 lip colour so this is what my finished colours looked like:
After that the last and yet somehow hardest step is to fit the felt piece over the top of the palette so you can glue it in place and wrap around to the back.
You should have a nice pretty little tray to go in your box like this:
The best part of this is that because it fits so snugly there is no need to glue it in place so in theory you could have one master box and put in a different palette depending on the make up you wanted to wear that day! At least that’s what I’m planning to do ^_^
Closed it looks like this:
So all in all I think this was a really good experiment! while it didn’t turn out perfectly, I can see what I want to improve for next time and I can’t wait to give it another go π
What do you guys think? Have you ever done something like this before?

A mini tutorial today on another way to display necklaces. I’m on a cleaning kick at the moment so I’m trying to be more organised. I found a bunch of necklace displays at a bead store which was closing down for $1 but they were quite ugly. So this is what I did with them. You could easily make your own out of cardboard.
What you need:
- Plastic jewelery stands, or cardboard to make your own.
- Pretty paper or fabric. I am using some rose scented draw liners I found at a junk store.
- Glue gun
- Lace/trim
- Scissors
Unfortunately some of my photos didn’t turn out well as the plastic displays were clear and the camera had trouble focusing on them.To give you an idea of what my jewelery stand looks like I’ve outlined it in pink here:
To make your own, just cut that shape out of cardboard. Mine has a stand that folds back but depending on where you’re going to be putting it, that might be unnecessary. |
Cut a section of the paper or fabric out which is big enough to cover the display completely and fold around the sides to the edges are hidden.
Use your glue gun to stick the base to the back of the paper.
Roll it forward and stick the top down as well. My stand was slightly curved so getting the paper lined up was a little hard. Make sure it’s perfect before you glue.
Cut the excess paper around the sides off so there is only a few inches of overhang.
Now fold the extra around the sides and carefully glue in place.
Repeat on the other side like this:
When you get to the curved bits just snip the paper ever few centimeters so you can fold it around the curve.
Glue this in place too…
This is how the other side looks:
I repeated this on all 4 of the ones I had:
Now it’s time to add some decoration. I didn’t want anything that would take away from the jewelery so I chose a fine white lace. You could also use ribbon or anything else glue-able.
I added the lace around the edges using a small amount of glue and that’s it ^_^ A nice simple craft which can be done in a few minutes.
Once I finish my cupboard re-organisation then you can see them all in action π

Today is all about cute storage. So many tutorials lately π
I have a lot of bottles in my bathroom, lots of hair spray, make up remover and things like that which are staples that I re-buy when they’re empty. Unfortunately the manufacturers that make all of those products didn’t bother consulting with each other on the designs so none of them match… how inconsiderate of them ;P
So how did I make my bathroom all pretty and matchy?
Slip covers. Very very easy to do and a very pretty result.
What you need:
- Whatever bottle you’re going to cover
- Felt or fabric
- Needle and thread
- Magnets or elastic
So you begin with something like this…
Get your fabric together, I am using pink felt with while polka dot tulle over the top.
Measure around the outside of your bottle. You will need to cut a rectangle of felt which is exactly the right height and width to wrap around the bottle.
After cutting this out you can decorate it. I am just adding a spotty overlay but you can do pretty much anything. I’m going to make some more which have embroidery and other fun things.
Fold the edges around and sew in place.
Now if you have a metal bottle you can simply add some magnets around the side to keep it in place on the bottle. Super easy.
If your bottle is plastic then all you need to do is form a tube with the felt and add a little bit of elastic which joins the sides together, now you should be able to slip the cover on and off easily. |
And you end up with something like this…
Took about 5 minutes to make and they look much prettier all in a row in the bathroom.
Yay for quick craft!

Omg look a tutorial shock horror! One about storage no less π See I am slowly catching up on everything, it’s just taking me a little while to do it. Next month I’ll even hopefully be back to posting every day ^_^
Anyway back down to it… a whole bunch of you have asked me about storage solutions and how to make mundane things look prettier. I’m slowly working through all the requests and today I’m going to show you how I store my rings and also my bobby pins. Hair flowers and pins that are stood up vertically (like this) are my absolute favorite kind because they are so versatile but they can be a little hard to store.
Today I’m making/decorating ring boxes!
What you need:
- Ring display boxes (I happened to find these for $1 each at a jewelery store which was closing down. You can easily make your own using a cardboard box and some foam. You just need to cut it to size and then slice lines to place the rings in)
- Glue gun
- Stanley knife/box cutter
- Adhesive spray (optional)
- Fabric to cover it all with
Remove the piece of foam from inside your box.
Cut a square of fabric big enough to cover the section of foam. We will work on this piece first. The fabric I used is stiff black chiffon with tiny diamantes all over it. I thought about using pink and green to represent a garden for my flower pins to grow in but decided that this would fit more with the look I’m trying to achieve in my bathroom.
If you have adhesive spray use it to hold the the fabric flat on the front of the foam. This will make sure it’s all tight and possibly prevent fraying when we eventually cut it (depending on the type of fabric you have chosen). |
Using your glue gun glue the fabric in place on the sides So the front section is nice and tight.
Now let’s do the box. Cut a strip of fabric long enough to go around the outside of the box. It will need to be wide enough to cover the outside as well as wrapping around to the inside surface and the back.
Use your glue gun to put a spot on each corner of the outside and wrap around the fabric. Fold the extra over onto the back of the box and glue it in place.
You should have something like this:
Fold the left over into the box and glue in place.
Now take the covered piece of felt and glue it into the box.
Take your stanley knife and cut through the fabric where the pre-cut lines in the foam are.
This is mine looked like after I cut it… If you had used adhesive spray yours would look neater:
Now it’s time to put in all your hair pins and rings in!
Taadaa…
I stacked by boxes in my bathroom so they took up less space while displaying everything really nicely.
Hurrah new cute display boxes that let me see every thing and make it much easier to grab things quickly in the morning.
What do you think?

Lots and lots of you have written in and asked for a way to store necklaces and bracelets like a pretty jewellery display stand or something. Well this is how I store mine so I hope you find it useful!
Remember when I was talking about candy cane themed crafts? Well this is it π
To be honest because of the colours I used it reminds me more of an old carousel which is even cooler than candy canes!
What you need for this pretty jewellery display:
- An old tea cup tree, I bought mine at a thrift store for $1
- A sheet of felt
- Thick ribbon
- Thin ribbon in another colour
- Scissors
- Glue gun
- Premade bows or ribbon for bows
I find the easiest base to start with is an old tea cup tree, these were very popular in the 80’s over here so thrift stores are full of them minus the tea cups now. If you can’t find one you could always make one out of wire and cardboard or something similar ^_^
First thing to do is pull off all of the arms bits of the tree so you have a stump. The arms will probably be held on my screws but if not then you can just reattach later using whatever method you want.
Then take your wide ribbon (I’m using velvet so it protects my jewellery) start at the bottom and spiral it up to the top. Hot glue it in place as you go and you get this:
Do the same thing on all of the arms you pulled off. Then you should add the thin ribbon to disguise the gaps between the thick. Do it to each pair of arms then screw them back in, you might need to poke holes in the ribbon for the screws to go through. Use a little extra glue to be on the safe side.
The ends of my tree were hollow so I poked the end of the ribbon in and glued them in place. This is what it looks like when it’s all put back together…
Now place your tree onto the felt and trace around the edge. You want two circles.
Cut them out π
The first one is for the bottom so the tree doesn’t leave scratch marks on your bench, just hot glue it on.
The second one will be for the top. Cut a straight line into the middle and then a hole the size of the middle pole of your tree.
Put it on like this and glue it down:
Now we need to cover the edges of the felt/rest of the stand. Normally I would do this with the same red felt ribbon but I ran out so I used a matching red satin ribbon. Basically I wound it around the bottom edge until no silver was showing and glued it in place.
I added a gigantic bow to the top and smaller bows at the ends of the branches to disguise the holes/ends of the ribbon.
Totally cute right?
Now the only thing left is to add your jewellery!
Because there are so many arms it’s much easier to find specific pieces than if they were just thrown in a box and tangles occur less frequently.
And there you have it ^_^
Now I’m frantically trying to pack away my craft supplies today in time for the move *_* I hope you enjoyed the pretty jewellery display tutorial and it gives you some ideas about storage! |
