How To Make A Simple Ribbon Necklace

Food Friday will have to wait because I didn’t have time to edit the photos, maybe I’ll do Food Sunday this week instead!

I’ve seen a lot of variations of this kind of dangly charm bracelet jewellery and I’ve been wanting to put my own spin on it ^_^

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4495_9023

The best part about it is that it takes absolutely no skill whatsoever to make :DYou need a bunch of random chains ribbons and charms in a colour scheme. I chose blue/white/gold.Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4337_8954Cut lengths of the ribbons and chain. It should be around 1 and 1/3rds the length you want the finished product to be.

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4338_8955

String charms randomly on to most of the ribbons, I left the chains blank because I couldn’t be bothered finding pliers.

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4341_8958

Now the thing that keeps it all together is the knotting, grab another piece of ribbon, this one should be quite a bit longer than the others. Tie it in a tight knot around the other ribbons around 5cm from the ends.

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4342_8959

Leave around 10cm gap and tie it around everything again. The placement of the knots is what determines the draping of the ribbons and charms.

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4343_8960

Keep going until you’ve tied it all up. I had 4 knots by the end. Now we need to make a way to attach it around the neck/wrist. Cut the ends leaving around 2cm of ribbon after the end knot and leave around 6cm more of the ribbon you did the knotting with. Fold it in half like this so it forms a loop.

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4345_8962

Wind a bunch of cotton around it and tie off to keep it in place. Now all you need to do is thread another ribbon through those loops and tie it around your neck!

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4346_8963

Taadaa!

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4496_9024

Lots of dangly pretty things, I think this kind of style works best with lots of little dangly things.

Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4348_8965Ribbon-Necklace-VioletLeBeaux_4494_9022

I’m glad to get crafts like this out of my system! When I see really particular styles everywhere I just want to make one so I can stop thinking about it XD

What do all of you think? Do you like this style?

How To Make A Melbourne Cup Race Day Fascinator DIY

I don’t know about the rest of the world but here in Aus it’s horse racing season and everyone is talking about it. Surprisingly though actually living *in* Melbourne I hear less about the Melbourne cup than I did in Brisbane XD Still everyone is getting into Spring carnival mode and the retailers here are pushing it pretty hard to try and claw back some of the sales lost online.

The discussion is the same every year though: “What hat will you be wearing?!”

For me the answer is usually “Ugh, hat?” because I’ve only been once and it wasn’t to a major race.

Fascinators are very popular with my friends but I’ve always thought 99% of them look a little silly because they tend to look like someone’s tried to built some kind of sculpture on your head but gotten bored half way through 😉 So James challenged me to make one that I didn’t hate and remembering the 1% that I do like (generally very vintage themed) this is what came out:

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4513_9041

I’m still not completely sold 😉

What I used:

  • Milliners netting which we found in the black hole downstairs
  • Hot glue
  • Fake flowers
  • Black lace
  • Hair Comb
  • Some dangly trim my Mum cut off one of her tops
So the key to these is the netting, it needs to be quite stiff. You could use stiff tulle if you want.
DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4349_8966
It was very hard to photograph it though being white so excuse the next few photos. So first thing I did was cut a long rectangle and fold in half.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4360_8977

I placed the two bottom corners over one of each other…

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4361_8978

Squished the middle down on top of the two corners and hold in place! You can sew it in place or glue it to hold it while you go get the comb part.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4362_8979

You can stitch it to the comb if you want but I figured I wasn’t going to be wearing this very often so I decided on glue.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4364_8981

The comb part goes under facing the same way as the bulk of the fabric.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4365_8982

To give the front a point of interest I glued some bling to it. I did want to do it all the way around the edges but didn’t have enough. The netting I was using didn’t fray because it’s plastic but I would suggest edging/hemming/covering the edges with something to prevent it degrading over time. I left the rest of mine plain because I thought with the colour, the slightly deconstructed look made it blend to my hair a bit better.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4366_8983

So the bling:

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4367_8984

I wanted something pretty to cover the comb part so I added some fake flowers ^_^

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4368_8985

It didn’t really match so I tied it all in by adding 2 layers of black lace as a frill.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4371_8988

Then glued it on.

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4370_8987

Then to cover all of the icky parts on the inside I glued a strip of lace over it all.DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4373_8990

Give it a while to cool down and avoid gluing it to your hair 😉

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4375_8992

Finished!

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4510_9038

So I’m not really a fascinator convert but I do quite like this one and it was fun to do something different 😀 I probably like it because it looks much more like a veil haha!

DIY-Fascinator-VioletLeBeaux_4522_9050

Hopefully you found my adventures into diy fascinators useful ^_^ Is the culture of picking the right hat or fascinator for the races as big everywhere else as it is here?

Looped Plaited Hair Tutorial For Spring
Today I’m doing a really simple style that looks really effective: looped plaits!
Brush out your hair and separate into two even sections.
Starting just above your ear plait holding it a little away from your head so it sits out.
Roll the end of the plait up and under the start.
Pin it in place.
Take the end of the plait and push it into the start so the loose end is completely hidden.
Add more pins if you need.
Repeat on the other side, start with the plait.
Some versions of this style use a hairband at the top but I prefer pins because it makes the loops a lot rounder.
Don’t forget to hide the ends of the plait and pin it very securely.
This is what it looks like from the back.
Add some embellishments like a headband or flowers.
All done!
This style is good for a casual look or even a classic Lolita style if that’s what you’re going for.
I hope this was a useful video, please check out the blog post linked in the description for more information and tutorials.

Ultimate Strawberry Hot Chocolate For Movie Nights – Food Friday

I’ve been pretty obsessed with Pinterest these last few weeks, it’s a really fun way to find new ideas and collect things you want to do together. I’ve even got a board for recipes I want to try out now 😀 Woo motivation!

So one of the recipes I collected was an awesome looking strawberry hot chocolate thingy made from melted icecream. I fell in love with how adorable it looked but the ingredients seemed a bit rich for my taste. You can see the original photos and recipe here.

Anyway, we had a movie night the other day and marathoned awesomely terrible 90’s teen movies, what better to do than try my own version: lazy bunny strawberry hot chocolate ^_^

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3691_8919

What you need:

  • Fancy glass to put it in (seriously this is what makes it that much more awesome)
  • Strawberry milk, or strawberry Nesquick etc, something pink and milky 😀
  • Chocolate
  • Cream to whip (or whipped cream in a can for extra lazy points)
  • Something to make the bunny ears, I used thick shards of honey comb from a failed attempt to make crumbly honey comb
  • Sprinkles
Get your ingredients ready or if needed run to the 7/11 because you’re silly and you didn’t plan this ahead 😉
VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3649_8877
Put the cream in a bowl and whip. If you have no clean bowls and your kitchen is totally dirty because you have done any washing up for days then tupperware will do nicely.
VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3652_8880
I can’t believe I actually whipped my own cream, that’s like the only part of this entire recipe which isn’t lazy XD

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3653_8881

Break up some chocolate and microwave it 30 sec at a time until it’s all melty.

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3657_8885

Mix it well so it’s consistant and easy to pour.

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3662_8890

Get your fancy cup and dip the top in the melted chocolate.

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3666_8894
Use a spoon to eat the rest of the chocolate drip more of the chocolate inside the glass. This makes the drink super yummy and chocolatey 😀

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3669_8897

Pour some of the pink milk into a mug and microwave it for 30sec at a time, stirring until it’s hot. Be careful not to boil it! Fancy people would probably do this on a stove… but it’s hard to be fancy when you’re about to sit down and watch Clueless and the original version of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie… and Can’t Hardly Wait 😀 😀 😀

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3671_8899

Pur the hot pink milk into the glass, the chocolate should have set a bit by now so it won’t just run everywhere. If you were smart you would have realised that it’s hard to pour from a mug into the tiny mouth of a mini wine glass so you would have transferred the milk into a milk jug BEFORE spilling it all over the counter… apparently I’m not that clever.

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3674_8902

So now you’ve got something like this:

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3677_8905

Fill the top with whipped cream. Don’t over fill it or you’ll make an even bigger mess on the bench >_<

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3679_8907

Decoration time! Sprinkles first…

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3682_8910

Then ears out of failed honey comb, you could use shortbread or flakes or anything vaguely pointy.

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3687_8915

Use  a little bit of melted chocolate and a finger to draw the bunny’s eyes and nose. Mine looks kind of evil…

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3694_8922

He’s probably mad because I spilled half of the melted whipped cream all over the counter too >_< This cooking thing is messy business!

VioletLeBeaux-Strawberry-Milk-Recipe_3695_8923

Do you guys have special movie night food? We usually just pile as much junk food as possible on to the couch and go nuts 😀 I’m running out of 90’s comedies to watch though, do you guys have any recommendations?

Morning Make Up- Super Glitter Pink and Purple

A new segment I’m trying out where in I show my morning make up routine for various days and chat about what I’m doing that day. Not really a tutorial, more of a random girly chat while we get ready together in the bathroom 😉

I think this is my all time favorite eye make up look.
Though that changes all the time so I’ll probably say something different tomorrow.
Basic skin and foundation first.
Apply highlighter under the brows and blend.
This was quite a while ago and my memory is failing me as I do this look so often.
Add thick eyeliner and wing it out quite a bit.
This is pretty much my auto pilot look now for when I can’t think of anything else.
Apply purple shadow all over the lid.
Do you guys have an auto pilot outfit/look?
Something you know you look good in no matter what?
Pack super bright pink glitter into the inner corner and blend 1/3rd of the way across. Sometimes wearing the same think over and over can get boring though.
The more sparkly the better.
I try to mix it up wearing the same items in different combinations.
Apply cream shimmer from the top of the brow bone to the purple and blend.
Sometimes though it can be hard to think of new combinations.
Add a bit of lilac cream pigment above the liner in the center.
So I get kind of stuck in a style rut.
Blend into the shadow.
Just doing the same things.
Take a dark purple shimmer and shade the outer corner in a pointed C shape, blend.
That’s usually when I go a completely different direction to try and get inspired again.
Other eye too.
Of course it doesn’t always work out well.
Line your waterline with white for brighter eyes.
But change and experimenting can be exactly what I need to get back and find inspiration.
Use brown liner on the outer 1/3rd of your lower lashes to join the wing.
It’s still nice to have comfy outfits and looks.
Apply mascara to the top lashes and the bottom outer 1/3rd.
And you can never go wrong with a pair of big false lashes.
Apply some nice thick pointed lashes.
And even it’s something I’ve worn a billion times before it’s still probably better than turning up in pajamas haha.
They take quite a while to dry so I keep going with other steps in the mean time.
Apply pink blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend well.
I never used to use blush but lately I’ve been wearing it more and more.
Add some berry pink lippy and a nice glitter gloss.
I still hate bronzer though, it never looks good on me.
Lashes are still drying.
I’ve been experimenting with highlighters lately so maybe bronzers are just around the corner.
I decided to add some lilac cream pigment to the inner corners of my eyes to brighten them a bit.
Last step. Soften the liner with some very dark shimmery purple.
I love the look of brown liner with purple shadow.
All finished. This is definitely one of my favorite looks.
Perfect for green eyes.
Now I need somewhere nice to wear it.
Shame to waste it at home. I’ll have to take James out somewhere fancy.
I hope this was a useful video, please check out the blog post linked in the description for more information and tutorials.
Thanks so much for watching.
Bye!

How To Recover A Stool With Fabric – Quick Craft

So I love my vanity table thingy but the seat part had been covered with some pretty ugly worn material. So what else to do than cover it with something more my style? Eventually I’m going to get it properly reupholstered but for now I wanted something quick and easy.

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4177_8755

I flipped it over.VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4178_8756Unscrewed everything…VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4180_8758

And the seat part came away easily.

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4181_8759

I cut out enough fabric to cover it with plenty of overhang.

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4183_8761

I folded the overhang to the back side…

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4184_8762

And stitched it all tightly together.

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4185_8763

I pulled the corners nice and tightly and pleated them so it looked smooth from the top.

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4186_8764

Not pretty but as it’s on the bottom who cares!

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4187_8765

After recutting the holes for the screws…

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4188_8766

…I put the whole thing back together again.

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4189_8767

Taadaa!

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4191_8769

Much nicer and easily removable later 😀

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4194_8771

This is a little more me ^_^

VioletLeBeaux-Vanity-Chair-Mod_4193_8770

Now I just need to get some more time to do our big couch XD
