This was my first attempt at a make up tutorial. My technique is that of a beginner and this was done as part reader request tutorial and part way to document my own progress.

Today on Violet Vision: How to do Violet’s Make Up.
Hi everyone and welcome to Violet Vision.
This is the first episode and today I’m going to show you how I do my make up.
Step one is to style your hair and make sure it’s out of your face.
Next I’m going to apply some foundation.
Make sure you get a good even coverage so you have a good base to work with for the rest of the tutorial.
I should also mention that the tips I’m going to give you today aren’t necessarily the best way to do your make up, this is just how I do my everyday make up.
I’m not a make up artist so there you go.
Pin your fringe back is the next step, it’s probably a good idea if you are going to put working with the top part of your head as well.
No body really sees the top of my head so sometimes I’m lazy and don’t bother but you might not have a fringe so there you go.
Next step is applying concealer, I like to apply it under my eyes. I tend to stay up late blogging a lot so there go the dark circles.
Any concealer will do the trick here but I prefer to use the ones with the little brushes and just use my fingers to smooth it in properly just because I think it gives a bit more control.
And I make sure to get it in the little creases in the inner corners of my eyes just so there are no weird dark spots.
You can use it for pimples too of course.
Next step is applying finishing powder. I prefer to use mineral powder because it goes nicely on my skin and suits the colour of my skin.
The next step is is mascara, very important!
I usually apply several coats of mascara because my lashes are non-existent. You can just apply one or apply throughout the tutorial.
I like to put on some after I’ve applied my false lashes.
You can clean up any mistakes just by getting a cotton bud and dipping it in water and then rubbing the stray mascara off.
Good as new.
Now you need to curl your lashes. I’m using the electric one from thousand hour lashes because it works for me. Whatever works well for you is good as well. You just need to heat it up for around 10 seconds before you use it.
I used to use the little scissor ones as well but I kept pinching myself so I think this is definitely the safer option.
If you want to apply blush this is the time to do it. A lot of the time I don’t use blush but if you like the extra doll like look this helps. I flush very easily so I don’t usually bother.
Now we’re going to apply the false lashes I’m using 1000 hour lashes.
You’ll need some glue as well. A good tip for false lashes is to actually fit them to your eye and cut off the extra. Some lashes are really long or even too short and you’ll look a little silly if they hang off the edge.
Basically you just apply the glue and press on. Some glues will need a few minutes to dry so wait around 20 seconds to wait for the glue to get tacky before you apply.
My glue is a bit crap so the only way to get it to stick is to put them straight on.
It’s by no means the best glue but it’s the only glue that I’m not allergic to.
So what you need to do is just apply a little bit of glue to the bone edge of your lashes.
You can either use your fingers or tweezers to apply them.
I like to use my fingers because I’m very uncoordinated with tweezers.
So just pop the inner corner on first and press it down.
Make sure that it’s in the right place and word your way to the edges. You want to get the lashes as close to the lash line as possible.
Make sure to get a glue which dries clear. You can see all of the white bits there so you’d end up with white bits everywhere.
So now we’re going to apply lip colour.
I use a lip stain or the base so I can choose how bright I want the colour to be depending on my mood.
Again I like to just put it on with my finger because I think it’s the easiest way to get the shape you want.
Of course the drawback to this is that you end up with a pink finger so make sure to wash it off.
Now applying the shine colour to the lips.
So this is pretty much just to give the lips some shine and make them pop.
Now I’m going to apply the black eyeshadow to the eye.
What you’re going to need is an angled eyeshadow brush and some black shadow. You can use eyeliner but I prefer shadow because it’s easier to blend.
So what you want to do is load up your brush and draw a line right above where you applied the lashes and extend it out a bit.
You don’t want it to be super dark, just a little bit to give a bit of mystery.
And just put a little flick at the side following the line of the lashes.
So now I’m going to apply the pink shadow.
Just the same pink blush that I sued on my cheeks but now for the eyes.
I’m going to be using a medium rounded brush to apply it and basically what I’m going to be doing is loading up the brush and giving the entire eye a sweep.
This is the main colour we’re using. So as you go just blend into the black you already put down so it gives a nice gradient.
Blending is really the key to this look.
The brushes I’m using are from EcoTools, their tagline is earth friendly tools and they’re actually my favorite at the moment.
They’re really light so you can take them traveling everywhere. So there you go, that’s how the pink goes.
Now we’re going to apply the white shadow.
And you need the angled brush again and obviously the white shadow.
Again this is where I point out that I’m not a professional make up artist and this is just how I do my make up. Load your brush with white.
Pop some eyeshadow in the inner corner. You want to blend it in to the pink you already laid down.
And make sure you get a little tiny bit below the eye as well. This is where the angled eyeliner brush is really handy to get right into that corner.
What this will do is make your eyes appear a little wider set than they are so they look big and cute.
Now it’s time to unpin your fringe again. Obviously if you didn’t have a fringe to begin with you can probably skip this step.
Give it a good brush out and you’re ready to go to a meet up or a night on the town.

I’ve done quite a bit of traveling in my time and I love exploring new and interesting places but I always try to travel in style.
I try to make my everyday life as beautiful as possible and traveling is no different. You won’t find me in sweat pants and thongs (or flip flops for my American readers), I want to feel as pretty leaving a 7 hour flight as I do going out to dinner!
So with my recent trip to Singapore I thought it was the perfect time to show you all how I travel in style. This is a compilation of tips I’ve picked up on my travels and my “must have” items for along the way.
First thing’s first…
Take something lucky
I’m not a superstitious person by nature but there’s a story behind this one! The day before we went to Singapore James and I were doing some last minute shopping in the city. I was feeling a little light headed so we stopped at McDonalds for some fries. As I was walking away I checked my change and what should be there but a Singaporean 10 cent piece!!
I was so surprised, normally if I get anything foreign in my change it’s New Zealand currency. This seemed so random and fateful that I kept it in a special compartment in my bag the whole trip!
On the plane:
Take some good headphones (and an ipod if you want to listen to *good* music). I hate airplane headphones, they are usually uncomfortable and don’t block outside sounds. Also they aren’t anywhere near as cute as mine! Headphones are super easy to deco, even if you have little ear bud ones a few diamantes will jazz them up nicely!
Keep hair and make up simple but elegant.
If you want to do make up, take a kit with everything you need for touch ups before landing. Keep in mind that you might need to sleep in what you’re wearing. I love false eye lashes because they are hard to mess up even in your sleep! On flights to and from SG I wore little individual lashes on the corners of my eyes for a little punch with no effort (review on the lashes soon). I did my hair in Kitty Rolls which were comfortable, survived sleeping but still looked cute.
Below are some of my travel essentials. Clear zip pouch with make up and liquids, letter writing kit, wet naps, face washer, mini sewing kit and bag tags for checked in luggage.
A cute travel document holder is an essential.
I would be forever loosing my boarding pass or passport if I didn’t have something this bright to remind me! I deco’d this one myself.
And of course a matching passport holder helps too 😉 These are all made of suede so they feel soft enough to be used as a pillow if it’s an emergency!
A sleeping mask
Something overly cute suits best! I want to be adorable even when I’m asleep so I picked the sugariest thing I could possibly find ^_^
A jacket
Take it on the plane with you, seriously. Even if you’re going to a hot destination the plane is always freezing and those little blankets don’t help. Good protection against the rain too.
Things to keep you entertained.
I take pens, note book, DS and games and well as my little UFO hand massager which is awesome for when you just want to relax. I am a very fidgety person so I take as many little things to play with as possible. With this I can continue my Japanese lessons on the DS then practice kanji or sentence structure in my note book.
Candy!
Candy is good to pop your ears in the plane and also tastes great. And they are a good conversation starter if a cute boy is sitting next to you 😉

Pick clothes that are appropriate for your situation. Fabrics that don’t wrinkle or require ironing are great for long flights but synthetic fabrics are horrible in hot climates! On the plane to SG I wore a cotton printed cord dress with a lace cardigan over the top.
Fabric choice is important. While in the heat in SG I wore thin stockings, cotton dresses and cardigans. Everyone was sweltering in the heat, even though I was wearing more layers I was cool because I was wearing fabric that could breathe.
Layering is the key to being ready for any weather! Cardigans are awesome, you can dress them up or down, take them off if you’re hot or add a jacket if you’re cold.
Weapons of choice:
A fan
I picked this one up for $0.70 and added bows, diamantes and lace. They are compact and can be invaluable in the heat. They can also be used to hide yawns behind in boring situations, keep your coughs or sneezes to yourself or whisper gossip to a friend 😉 Keep it in your hand bag!
A singlet
Singlets are the ultimate versatile piece of travel clothing. Wear during the day if it’s hot, layer with a cardigan to go out to dinner, use as pajamas or as swimmers if you’re in a pinch. Cute pajamas are surprisingly important, if you have luck like mine you’ll end up outside at 2am for a fire drill chatting to the other hotel patrons so this is probably not the right time to sleep in the nude 😉 Be prepared for anything because holidays are all about going with the flow!
Sun protection eg. a sun hat, sunscreen etc.
The sun is mean and evil, stay away from it! No one likes sun burn, it’s icky. Don’t stop protecting your skin just because you’re on holiday. ‘Nuff said.
Sunglasses
… ok maybe not “‘Nuff said”… These are only half for the sun protection though. The other half is looking damn good! There is nothing classier that popping on some nice sunglasses when you’re not feeling 100%. Hide the bags under your eyes from the 7hr flight and look like a rock star 😉
A handbag sized umbrella.
These fold down so tiny there’s not much of an excuse not to have one. This one has an aluminum frame so it’s super light and is perfect in unpredictable weather or in place of a parasol.
A scarf
I carry a scarf and a face washer with me pretty much all the time. The face washer was a gift from a friend in Japan, the lady’s bathrooms there don’t have hand towels so most girls carry their own but it’s also useful for mopping up spills on nice dresses, fixing make up, using as a small pillow and the list goes on!
The scarf is not only useful but looks damn stylish hanging off a handbag! Did your hair get ruined? Then wear it like a 50’s movie star. Forget the hot rollers? Use it for pin curls. Sudden hay fever attack and not a tissue in sight? Well you get the idea…

Gifts for the new friends you meet!
I didn’t get to hand any of these little babies out because we were just so busy but I really wanted to give them to the organizers at Nuffnang. It’s a really great idea to take something from your home country. These little kangaroo and koala toys didn’t cost much but I hand glued a bow and diamante to each to personalize them. That way your friends will have something cute to remember you by 🙂 And you won’t feel awkward if someone gets you something nice because you’ll have something give back!
Slippers
You never know where you’re going to have to walk in your hotel. Whether it’s for that proverbial 2am fire drill or you want to visit a friend down the hall, you never know who’s icky feet have been there before you. Cute little ones like these only cost me $10 and they fold up to practically nothing in your suitcase.
Nail repair kit
I am a big believer in preparing for any situation, James says I should have been a girl scout. That’s why I carry a nail repair kit with spare nails, glue clear polish and anything else you might need.
Bags within bags within bags within bags…
This is important because it keeps everything nice and separate in your suitcase, no searching through the make up bag for a hair band because they have their own bags! Being organized is key to a fantastic wardrobe, if you are well organized you can find all the right accessories at a glance… and there are is always room somewhere in here for more little bits and pieces you buy along the way.
Tiny cute bottles.
These cost $1.50 per pair and they are some of the best things I’ve ever bought. This way you can take all of your usual bathroom liquids with you. You can even get ones with spray lids for things like curl enhancer. Very cleaver.
Business cards:
You never know who you’re going to meet while out and about and if you’ve got a blog or business then it’s a great idea to have a couple of business cards with you. Mine are double layered so there is my blog card on top and by graphic design card on bottom. They stand out because they are fastened with a bow in the top corner ^_^
Foreign currency
Don’t go anywhere without it. Some places don’t accept credit cards etc so make sure you check before you go, it’s always useful to have some foreign currency on hand for taxis etc anyway.
A bag full of cables for your various gadgets.
Definitely important so you can charge your ipod/laptop/phone etc. A power point converter is also a great idea. The most important part of this is the bag, don’t bother going searching through your whole suitcase just grab the bag. On the way home the bag also be used as carry on luggage for all that extra shopping 😉
Luggage:
I hate not being able to find my luggage at the other end. I’m also paranoid because I’ve had luggage stolen before and no matter what compensation you get there are some things which can’t be replaced. So if it can’t be replaced, don’t pack it. I also hate that all luggage pretty much looks the same. Ideally I would have liked one of these babies by Hideo Wakamatsu but as we only discovered how broken our old cases were the day before we left, I didn’t really have time to shop for a new one :(… It’s made my dream list for next time though, in fact I would go as far as to say that this is my dream suitcase! (click the image for the specs)
So in lue of one of those beauties we borrowed plan old suit cases from James’ parents. To make it more memorable I tied some old crappy acrylic lace around it several times. James laughed at me but it worked, we spotted our bags in like 2 seconds at the other end and were out of there!
Super bright bag tags help too if you can’t afford a whole new suitcase.
When you get home…
Unpack everything as quickly as possible otherwise you’ll get lazy and it will never get done! I’ve left a suitcase for weeks before because I was tired when I got home and then got busy at work, don’t fall into the trap! It only took me like half an hour to unpack both of our cases this time.

So after emails back and forth with the company that owns 1000Hour (ChemCorp) they were very helpful and apologetic about the allergy. They even sent me a little care package for my troubles! They refunded the money I spent on the glue originally and covered my Doctors costs and the medicine so I wasn’t out of pocket. What made me really happy was that they sent me some complimentary gifts to apologize ^_^
I received a cute little heated eyelash curler which I’ve been eyeing off for a while

And eyebrow tweezers with a built in light.
I don’t pluck my eyebrows so I gave the tweezers to my Mum. I have road tested the eyelash curler though!
Firstly I decided that the plain black was a bit boring so I deco’d it 😀 Much cuter no? The curler comes with a cleaning brush, but there isn’t anywhere to store it so I’ll probably loose it! So here is what my eye looks like without anything on it.
The instructions say that you should apply mascara first and then turn the curler on. You wait 15 seconds for it to heat up. This is my eye with plain mascara:
There is a little light on the curler to indicate when it’s switched on and the AAA battery was supplied in the pack. I think the size is more convenient than a traditional scissor shaped curler, I can store it with my mascaras and eye pencils rather than having to find space for a traditional curler’s odd shape.
Ok so after it’s heated up you use it as if you were applying mascara. Face the heated comb on your lashes and press them upwards. Hold them there for a few seconds and you’re done! I repeated it a few times on each eye. The comb doesn’t get overly hot which was a nice surprise because I was worried about burning myself with my clumsiness XD It was still hot enough to curl and the plastic guard makes it very difficult to touch your skin with the coil. It has 2 heat settings controlled by the switch on the side.

I wasn’t expecting to like it because I thought the concept was a little strange but in the end I really liked the result! It was very easy to use and I think it did just as good of a job as a standard scissor one. I like that it doesn’t feel as damaging as a normal curler and the best part: There’s no way to accidentally pinch your eyelid with it! ^_^
It’s made it’s way into my standard make up kit, so that’s a thumbs up from me! Edit: You can buy one from Priceline for RRP$19.95.
Have you guys ever used one of these or have you used 1000 hour lash glue?
There are some days when absolutely nothing seems to work the way it should. Work explodes into a hot sticky mess, your hair won’t sit right no matter how much hair spray you use, there is nothing but spam in your inbox and you have a migraine the size of China. I am having one of those weeks!
So what to do in this situation but take a little time to yourself and relax.
If you’re anything like me you’re not very good at relaxing. I am the kind of person that needs t do like 10 things at once or I’ll get bored and feel unproductive. So this is my guide to relaxing.
Life can be very tiring!
This is my secret relaxation kit, what you can see is: -Pot of tea (blueberry) -Tea cup (the cutest one you can find), milk and sugar -Face and hair masks -Sleep mask -Nail polish and toe separators -Bueno (Damn it Bueno sponsor me already so I can have free ones!) -Cute silver tray to carry it all on. -Advil to remove horrible headache or something stronger if needed
Optional: -Water bottle -Tv with Judge Judy on because she is hilarious -Body butter for massages -Boyfriend to apply said body butter, nail polish, pour tea, feed Bueno etc.
All of this should be done in bed with lots of comfy pillows or on a relaxing couch in front of the tv.
Preparation: -Make a pot of tea and collect all the needed equipment -Have a warm relaxing shower and wash your hair out, hime styles can be very tough on your hair with all of the spraying and teasing so give some love back to it!
-Apply the hair mask according to the instructions and clip your hair back to let it dry.
My favorite brand of facial mask is Montagne Jeunesse but they are all pretty much the same so just get whichever is available to you. This one is a self heating one.
It looks super gross. Apply the mask according to the instructions, make sure to check how long you need to leave it on for.
At this point you probably look like a swamp monster so take a moment to enjoy that feeling. This effect works even better if you haven’t shaved your legs for ages 😉
Now while the face mask is setting you can take the time to paint your toe nails. If you wear high heels all the time you could also take the time to give your feet a massage, feet take a lot of weight so treat them nicely!
My poor feet are covered in blisters at the moment because I wore some heels without stockings one day ;_;
If you want them to look extra special add some diamantes or a cool konad design. Now I usually make the tea so it has a chance to cool while I take off my face mask. I like lots of sugar! Having a cute tea pot is very important 😛
And don’t forget the Buenos! There is one for me, one for James… or maybe both for me! Before you eat you should wash all of the face mask off. Your skin should feel smooth and beautiful. Then you can enjoy your tea 😀
And if you feel like it you can take a nap! Naps are awesome, more people should take naps. Shh I’m trying to sleep! At the end of this you should be very chilled!
So what do you do to relax when you’re having a crap day?
Well after doing it every day for the last year or so I’ve developed some short cuts and easier ways of doing things. So I decided to made a revised tutorial and include the information about hot rollers in the bottom. The best part about this version is that there is very little teasing involved so very little damage 😀
We are going to end up with this: Now the secret to being able to do this style of hair with minimum teasing/damage is having something to stick in the middle to hold everything up. I borrowed this idea from Super Kawaii Mama’s video on 1960’s beehives. You need something to hold the center shape and a ratty old hair extension.
I use an old bandanna folded and then rolled up, you could use whatever you want as long as it gives the same basic shape. This gives a great amount of pouf and is sturdy. You can really use anything that will hold the shape.Now find an old hair extension you’re never going to use again and tease it until it’s solid and matted, this helps it keep it’s shape.
Roll it around the bandanna.
Secure the ends with some bobby pins. Pinch the ends in and secure with more bobby pins until you can’t see the bandanna anymore. Finished! Now you can start trying it out with your hair!
First separate the front section of hair which will become the bump.
This is the front section: Clip it to the side for now and keep it out of the way. Now place the hair piece on to of your head just behind the section you clipped. Secure it with some pins, I usually use one on each side then one for the front and one for the back. Don’t forget to put one in the front of you’ll find your bump gradually sliding backwards during the day.
Unclip the section of hair and divide it into 3, with a larger portion in the middle. Brush the middle section upwards and give it a good dose of hair spray. If you want to make it easier to manage you can tease (back comb) near th e roots but it’s not completely necessary. Pull it backwards and pin it behind the hair piece. Now do the same with each side. Brush it, spray it, pin it and spray it again! This is how the back looks:
All finished! Now it’s time to curl the rest of the hair. You will need your hot rollers, I have a set from Vidal Sassoon and they are awesome. Make sure to heat them up for the recommended time and always follow the instructions. I use mine on the hottest setting because I have very hard to curl hair.
You are also going to need the little clippy things to keep them in. I prefer the plastic ones to the metal “U” shape ones because they are quicker and easier to use. If you have hard to curl hair like me then you will need something like Tresemme Curl Activator spray. Some people use curling water but I have no idea where to get that from. Anyway give your hair a spray all over with the curl activator.
Brush out the rest of your hair, be very careful to hold where the pins are so you don’t ruin all the hard work you just did!
After you have heated the rollers get one ready to use. Don’t touch the hot part! The first this we want to do is get rid of all of the pinned ends so we can’t disturb the top bump It doesn’t really matter how you roll this part because it’s going to be hidden by a bow at the end. I’ll show you exactly how to roll them properly in a second. Clip it out of the way! Ok! Now let’s section a piece to curl. I like to start with the piece on the side and in front of my ears because I want these to be the curliest so I leave them in for the longest. Grab your section and brush it. Spray it! Brush through again to smooth it. Now grab your roller and twist the hair around it at the bottom. As you roll up catch the end of the hair in and keep rolling so it holds. To get this perfect you’ll have to experiment with your hair, for example if I roll these underhand the curls won’t hold but if I roll them overhand they curl nicely. It’s all about experimenting to find what works for your hair type! Clip the roller into place and you’re done.
Now start sectioning the back and rolling them up too. Start at the top and work down. Fit in as many as you can, the small the sections of hair you roll the better they will take the curl. This is how mine looks when it’s all done 😀 Give it all a good final spray. If you’re going to try hime style hair, make friends with your hair spray! Now it’s just a matter of waiting! Go have breakfast or do your make up. Wait at least 20min until all of the rollers are completely cool to the touch! I went and replied to some of your wonderful comments about the new layout 😀 Hi internet people! Ok time’s up! You should take them out front first and then from bottom to top at the back. When you pull them out they will look kind of funky. Curl them around your finger to point them in the right direction. Hurrah a pretty curl! Now spray it in place!

And you end up with this! If you don’t like how some of the curls are sitting just gently separate them with your fingers. Fix up your fringe and add some accessories. All finished 😀 And the back: The side: The end!
On another note, does anyone know how to stop blogger from compressing photos when I upload them? My photos are very good quality but when they are uploaded they get pixely and washed out 🙁 I’m seriously considering just getting my own domain bleh.

One more piece of news before I get stared on the hair tutorial! This is directly related to the tutorial though, on the weekend I used 1000hour eyelash glue and had a terrible allergic reaction to it. My eyes swelled shut and so I’ve had to photoshop some of these photos to not look completely ridiculous, the photos also saved really low quality due to a glitch in the camera so bleh. I’m going to be writing a review on the lash glue later this week and let’s just say it’s not exactly glowing but I’m waiting to hear back from their customer service department about treatments.
Without further ado, onto the tutorial!
This tutorial is for how to create this hairstyle. I’ve heard this called several different names (double french twists, 60’s rolls etc) but I think the name “Kitty rolls” is cutest because it reminds me of Kitty from “That 70’s Show”! This is a great style for when your hair is a bit dirty or you’re rushed for time.
You will need: -Hair spray (I’m going to review this brand later this week too)
-Bobby pins and a brush – An alice band (optional) First brush out your hair backwards so there is no part.
-Lightly spray the top and sides of your hair. This is just to give it some texture and get the bobby pins to hold. Now you should seperate a section on each side of your head. Imagine drawing an invisible line from each ear and pulling everything in front of the line forward.
Put these two parts to the front and sit the alice band behind them. This is so when we twist everything together you can hide the ends of the alice band. See the placement? Now get some bobby pins ready. It’s good to have them on hand so you don’t have to drop any hair bits to find them. I have a bad habit of opening them with my mouth XD
Start on one side and brush out one of the front sections.
Twist this section backwards.
And then place it (not too tightly) backwards and behind the alice band. This photo has been censored for my frilly peace of mind! It was a seriously bad allergic reaction! Ok now pin it in place. The best way to do this is to open the pin, grab the edge of the twirl and the push the pin into the rest of the hair with it’s open edges towards your face. This is a very sturdy way of securing the hair. Here is a video:

Now grab another section of hair a bit bigger than the last.
Pull it upwards and twist it around the last section of hair.
Pin it in place It looks like this: Keep going grabbing sections of hair and twisting them until you reach the middle of the back of your head. Now do the same to the other side! Exactly the same process on the other side until you reach the middle. It should look like this:
And from the side: Now the back part is a little tricky so I’ve got another short video down lower. Grab all the loose hair and carefully brush it out. Spray some hairspray on it to give it some more hold.
Get those pins ready again! Ok with the hair between you fingers, roll it up. Depending on your hair length you might need to roll it over twice.
Hold it there and pin through the holes on each side until it’s secure.

Ok so you’ve got the back part now it should look like this: See that weird hole in the back, let’s get rid of it!
Here is how it looks from the back, basically just keep adding pins until you’re happy with the shape. The easiest way to do this is to use a second mirror to see exactly how it looks.
Time to decorate now! Get any clips or pins you want to put in the back. The good thing about hime gyaru fashion is that you can cover any mistakes with extra bows or flowers ^_^ Don’t forget to give it a good spray, you don’t want bits coming down during the day/night.
I added two flower pins and a big rose barrette thingy that I made the other day.
And from the side: Finish doing your make up, add a bunch of accessories and you’re ready to go! Taadaa!
Well I hope you enjoyed the tutorial, once you get the hang of doing the twisting it only takes about 5 minutes. I’ve even managed on a train on the way to a job interview once XD
