Ebook Review- Living Frugally Without Sacrificing Your Style

My lovely friend Vanessa of NessBow.com just released her latest ebook and she sent me a copy to review! I was really excited because it’s topic is “Living Frugally Without Sacrificing Your Style”. Why yes, that is completely up my alley.

From her Etsy listing:

I’m a thrifty, canny young lass who hates paying full price for anything. I’ve never had a huge income, but I’ve always managed to live stylishly on the money I have. I’ve compiled all my money-saving tips into one 42-page e-book for your reading pleasure.

The e-book covers topics such as:
-Setting a budget
-Clothes shopping on a budget
-Resisting impulse buying
-Cutting your household costs
-Avoiding money traps
-Saving for that special something
-Recessionista beauty tips
-Overcoming the stigma of frugality

And much more!

This e-book is a must for anyone who is looking to save for something special, or who just wants to cute down on their spending, without giving up their style.

Of course Vanessa knows I don’t play favorites in my reviews so here are my honest thoughts on it step by step.

Value:

The book is $5 and 42 pages long. Considering that’s all text and no images I think that’s fantastic value. The fact that it was completely text was both good and bad because it was *a lot* of information but I also felt that being a visual learner I may have absorbed more of it had there been some break with images.

Every single page is filled with tips and tricks for budgeting and making the most of your money for your lifestyle. I’ve read way too many books on this topic and to be honest they do all tend to blur together because they use the same general ideas, this book actually had some I hadn’t heard (like keeping muesli bars in your handbag to avoid impulse expensive snacking) so I was quite surprised and will be incorporating them into my lifestyle.

Style of writing:

Vanessa writes with the voice of someone who has experience in the topic of being on a strict budget. I know that voice well because I’ve been in the same boat as her since moving out of home at 17. She writes very positively and gives real ideas that are actually realistic for young people who are for whatever reason strapped for cash. The book tries to lift the negative image of being “frugal” which I think is really positive. I know I’ve been teased for not having money to splash around so it was very easy to relate to. She includes anecdotes from her time growing up as a student too which were really cute.

Topics covered:

All of the basic money topics were covered (budgeting, cutting down expenses, shopping tips etc) but there were also chapters dealing with lifestyle issues such as fitness, treating yourself and saving up. I liked that approach because it while style was a big focus I felt like it didn’t leave behind other aspects of life. It was a good round list of topics.

I liked that she suggested cost effective ways to pamper yourself rather than just cutting out luxuries. Obviously being a book about living stylishly on a budget there were lots of suggestions for that including shopping advice and ways to save up for dream items.

There is definitely a big emphasis on financial responsibility with advice on saving money for a rainy day as well as being able to save and shop for the present. Honestly it always astounds me how little many people of my generation save money even when they are on good incomes. I’ve always been the kind of girl who would put away money just in case and that’s saved me many times!

Giving gifts was another topic that I thought she covered very well, I know I’ve been in the situation when there are several birthdays around the same time and I panic trying to find things within my budget and this is a topic often forgotten in these kind of guides.

Overall:

While some of the topics covered are basic tips the book goes into detail for many other topics and as someone who has been living on a small income for many years I still found things new to me. I think it’s good value for $5 as I could see the tips inside it saving far more in the long run if you’re unfamiliar with budgeting or living on small means.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re on a small budget and looking for ideas on how to stay stylish.

I enjoyed reading it and am looking forward to Vanessa’s next book.

Check it out for yourself over here in Vanessa’s Etsy store and while you’re there check out her other books too.

Australis Eyeshadow Primer

VioletLeBeauxP1060342_17253

Australis Eyeshadow Primer

Obtained: Gift Bag.

Thoughts:

Before this I didn’t really use a specific eye primer, I just used my face primer all over my face. I’m always out to try something new though so for a couple of months I used this Australis eye-specific primer and noticed…. pretty much not difference at all. It went on smoothly and didn’t have any particular scent. It felt slippery on while drying and while it did make a minor difference compared to wearing no primer at all it seemed to have less hold than my regular primer. While I’ve seen some good reviews on this for other people it just didn’t really wow me. Definitely worth the price if you don’t use an all over face primer though so I’d suggest trying in store and seeing how it works for you.

Would I buy Australis Eyeshadow Primer again: Not for me but possibly for a friend.

BYS Eye Pallete- Purples and Pinks

VioletLeBeauxP1060339_17250

BYS Eye Pallete

Obtained: Bought.

Thoughts:

I spotted this at a junk store and liked the idea of having all of the colours I usually use in one palette for traveling. At around $5 the price was right too. The colours are just beautiful and so bright in the palette. Unfortunately that doesn’t carry over to being on the face and they are not very pigmented at all. I found the colours much closer to the original when applied wet but even then it required a lot of digging to get enough out. For a $5 palette I can’t really complain though, it’s still great for traveling and keeping in my handbag for small touch ups while out. It does have a place in my collection but not as something I would use every day.

Would I buy BYS Eye Pallete again: Probably not because the colours aren’t as bright as I personally like.

Clinique Quickliner Intense Review

VioletLeBeauxP1050855_16618VioletLeBeauxP1050857_16620

Clinique Quickliner Intense

Obtained: PR provided.

Thoughts:

I’m not usually a fan of pencil liners because I find them harder to control than gel or liquid. I actually really liked using these two though. The formula was really creamy, the colours were subtle but still noticeable and they had really nice staying power once completely set. The only drawback I noticed was that the creamy consistency means that they must be stored with lids on otherwise they dry out. Not a big thing but worth mentioning. I like that the base of both the purple and green was dark enough to almost be black but each had a slight coloured shimmer to it. When just applied the colours were very smudge-able and once dry they lasted quite well.

The application was much easier than the traditional pencil as well because it’s a wind up with a very thin tip.

Would I buy Clinique Quickliner Intense again: Yes, they looked great on and lasted well.

The Face Shop Pencils Review

VioletLeBeauxP1050848_16611VioletLeBeauxP1050849_16612

The Face Shop Pencils

Obtained: PR provided.

Thoughts:

I love The Face Shop, it’s one of my favorite brands for skin care products. I’ve only ever ventured into their make up a couple of times but I was never particularly wowed. This time I bought a dark purple eyeshadow stick and a creamy white pencil.

The white pencil:

The colour is really shimmery and the texture is creamy, it applies so much easier than most of my other pencils which is awesome because I like using it on my waterline. This I would absolutely buy again and it’s become one of the most important pieces in my make up set.

The dark purple eye shadow stick:

I have the light purple/pink one of these already which I quite liked but I found that one was hard to get pigment out of. This one didn’t have that problem at all, it gives a nice dark shimmery purple. I like the consistency but it does have a tendency to crease. I like to use it with a brush as an eyeliner because the staying power is quite good like that. I probably wouldn’t buy this again because of the creasing.

Would I buy The Face Shop Pencils again: Yes on the pencil because it’s awesome but no on the shadow stick because it’s a bit too creasy for me. I will definitely have another look at the collection in general.

Pretty Serious Cosmetics Review

I love when good people’s hard work pays off. This is one of those times, I’ve known Kaz from her blog Pretty Random online for years and she is so nice, her posts are hilarious and she does awesome nail polish swatches. Anyway fast forward to a while ago and she announced that she was going to be launching her own line of cosmetics. A cosmetics line which took her massive amount of knowledge from testing other people’s products into account. She and I have very similar taste when it comes to polish so it was at that point that the drool started forming on the side of my mouth.

Then she started posting swatches of her samples and I was so excited that I started throwing money at my computer screen and hoping some of that glittery goodness would magically appear on my desk. Funnily enough with her store not open yet that didn’t work XD However she did contact me a few weeks ago and offer to send some samples over for me to try so YAY that!

This is what arrived in my post box from Pretty Serious Cosmetics:

VioletLeBeauxP1060519_17425

Everything was packaged in cardboard boxes and bubble wrapped. Matching purple tissue paper in the box too. Nothing damaged in transit.Opening up the packaging, I received the matching CGU set of lipgloss, nail polish and loose eyeshadow. It’s a light purple base with blue shimmer. Did I mention that all of the names are nerdily inspired? The first collection is called “Hello World” mwahaha. As always promised I would be completely honest in the review regardless of being friends, luckily my expectations of awesomeness were not disappointed.

VioletLeBeauxP1060522_17428

Everything is Vegan friendly, cruelty free and the polishes are also Big 3 free as well as formaldehyde resin free.

VioletLeBeauxP1060523_17429

So let’s go one by one with these. The package of 3 is currently $26.85 or they can be bought individually on the site.

Lipgloss-

Packaging is plain and plastic, the lid is a little light but the overall weight is nice. The size is a tiny bit wider than most of my other glosses so I think it’s good value. Only complaint I have there is that it’s got one of those tops that wipes most of the gloss off the applicator. They are fairly standard though so can’t complain and I just popped the white part off the top so it comes out more smoothly.

It was extremely difficult to get a decent swatch of the lipgloss, it’s very sheer in that it provides only a slight wash of light purple with slight blue shimmer. You can definitely tell it’s shimmery in the light but capturing it on film not so much >_< I prefer more opaque coverage so my favorite way to wear it is layered over a matte lipstick for extra shimmer.

The formula is very different to a lot of other glosses, going on it actually feels like a creme lipstick. I don’t know how to describe it other than velvety… but liquid velvety… and not sticky so my hair just kind of slides off rather than getting stuck in it. The smell is something that one really has to experience as well. It is the EXACT smell of grape HubbaBubba. That could be a good or bad thing considering it made it really hard not to lick >_>

VioletLeBeauxP1060531_17437

Loose Eyeshadow-

The loose eyeshadow powder is beautiful, this close up will give you a better idea of the blue shimmer’s real colour.

VioletLeBeauxP1060526_17432

The powder is smooth and the glitter isn’t scratchy which makes for a very nice application both wet and dry. Dry it gives a very subtle shimmer and is beautiful on every day looks. Wet is where this really stands out because it looks AMAZING. Very pigmented and shimmery but still easy to blend with other colours. I have added this to my “most used” drawer which is saying something because I find loose powder in general less convenient than pressed. It’s a very big jar for the price so I’m thinking of pressing some myself to add into my every day and travel palettes, that’s how much I like it XD

I’ve got some nice FOTD photos coming up in an outfit post using it but until then you might like to see this live version of Morning Make Up that I did for a daily vlog where I apply it wet.

Nail Polish-

And lastly the polish! Seeing as Kaz is a renowned polish blogger I expected big things from this and I wasn’t disappointed. My swatch today will be modeled by the lovely James… because he was dumb enough to sit next to me and be engrossed in his game 😀 Poor James!

The bottle is square which I prefer as they store more easily, the lid is matt black plastic and the brush is standard. Drying time was also standard.

Anyway you can see that with two coats it dries to a pink based purple and again the blue shimmer isn’t over powering at all. The formula was flawless and smooth, opaque with one coat but I did two to get a real depth of the shimmer. Overall this is a winner too and I’d really like to bust out my brushes and Konad to see if this would work with it. I haven’t used the Konad in so many years >_<

VioletLeBeauxP1060527_17433

So overall?

I love the idea of matching collections like this. This probably isn’t a surprise considering how much I love matching everything. I found no major flaws in the collection and the quality is above what usually comes in this price range in Australia. Friendship aside I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this again or the rest of the collection.

Mostly this collection really inspires me, it’s awesome to see good things come from nice people. It sounds soppy but I know how hard Kaz worked on this and it gives me hope that if I work just as hard that maybe my projects (like Bergamot) will turn out equally awesome. I can’t wait to buy some of the rest of the collection (hello Birthday Money!) and to see what she comes out with next. *cough*youshouldtotallymakeapinkglitter*cough*

Now quick look at the site before I buy it all 😀
