Outfit of the day Post- Nuffnang Meet up!

Ok clearly I haven’t been cam-whoring enough lately because you girls have actually been asking for outfit photos!

I suppose I have been doing a lot of crafts XD

I think it’s because I’m trying to use up a lot of my supplies before we move so I don’t have to bring them with me!

So a couple of weeks ago Nuffnang threw James and I a going-away party πŸ˜€

This was my outfit for the night…

Nuffnang Meet up

I hope you weren’t too distracted from the outfit by the hideous carpet!

Outfit details:Shirt- Nuffnang- “I’m famous in the blogosphere”- modified by me Skirt- Vintage from Blue Velvet Vintage Shoes- Bodyline Stockings- Myer Bow- Made by me Jewelery- random

Heehee I made a new hair bow from the left overs of the Nuffnang shirt, it says “We <3 Bloggers”!

Nuffnang Meet up

Of course it was a fairly small turn out because for some reason Brisbane bloggers don’t like hanging out! We had a blast though! Below left to right is Wouter, me, Tash and James is taking the photo.

Nuffnang Meet up

I’ve been trying to take more effort with my make up lately too and try out looks I wouldn’t normally wear. The next day I tried out this purple/pink eyeshadow combination and I really like it!

Nuffnang Meet up

I’m loving anything with glitter in it at the moment ^_^

Nuffnang Meet up

I’m wearing my green lenses here. I love how much they contrast!

Nuffnang Meet up

And one without the flash to show the sparkles:

Nuffnang Meet up

The biggest news I have today is that in 10 days James and I are moving down to Melbourne! EXCITING!

What this means is that for the week leading up to leaving and the week we get there I am going to be crazy busy trying to find an apartment and setting everything up there. I’m still going to be posting as usual and I’ll schedule posts for when we’re driving down but it means I won’t be able to reply to comments and emails as quickly as I do now because we won’t have as stable internet.

Don’t worry I promise I will answer every single comment and email eventually, it will just take me a little while!

It’s a really big move for us and hopefully it will lead to lots and lots of really exciting things in the future so please bear with me for now! We are driving all the way down so I’ll bet there are going to be lots of silly road trip photos and videos for you soon πŸ˜›

Have you guys ever moved city before? It’s a bit scary, I think I need a moving cities outfit πŸ˜‰ Love Violet

Super Cute T-shirt Surgery Tutorial

A few months ago a reader wrote in and asked me to write a t-shirt surgery tutorial.

If you haven’t head of t-shirt surgery it’s basically when you take a plain old t-shirt and you make it into something cooler and more fashionable. There is a community for it here where you can see some fantastic examples.

So anyway when I got the request I didn’t think it was something I would do because I don’t wear t-shirts often… but it stayed in my mind for ages and I kept thinking about it more and more until I had an idea πŸ˜€ When we were in Singapore for the Nuffnang Awards, Nuffnang Australia was lovely enough to give us all shirts. Mine had the slogan “I’m famous (in the blogosphere)” hahaha! I thought it was awesome but they only had large sizes so since then I’ve used it to sleep in… but no more!

Making this…

T-Shirt Surgery

From this….

T-Shirt Surgery

Into this….

What you need for this particular t-shirt surgery tutorial:

  • Large shirt (I’m using my Nuffnang one)
  • Other shirt in a cute colour. I’m using an old pink Emily the Strange shirt
  • Needle and thread
  • Thin elastic
  • Flowers or decoration
  • Scissors
  • Overlocker or sewing machine
  • Shirt that actually fits you (for measuring)

Please note that I am hand stitching almost everything here because my sewing machine has been packed up for the move, if given the choice I would definitely use a machine for this project. I am going to redo the stitching when we get to the new house πŸ˜€

T-Shirt Surgery

First turn your white shirt inside out. Lay your white tee on a flat surface and place the shirt that fits you over the top. Line up the shoulder seams to make sure it’s in the right place.

T-Shirt Surgery

Cut the bottom off in line with your nice shirt.

T-Shirt Surgery

Cut up the side seems around 1.5cm away from your nice shirt’s seam, this is to give it enough room for the new seam we’re going to sew. You will notice when you’re cutting that the seam is probably not a straight line but instead it curves slightly. This curve will give the waist some shape so if you want to adjust this now is the time!

T-Shirt Surgery

Cut until you reach just below the sleeves.

T-Shirt Surgery

Following the line of the sleeves cut around at an angle. Now it just looks like a longer sleeve ^_^

T-Shirt Surgery

Fold the shirt in half and repeat on the other side.

T-Shirt Surgery

So this is what you should end up with… it pretty much just looks like a smaller shirt now ^_^

T-Shirt Surgery

Now let’s cut a new neckline! Turn it the right way out so you can see what you’re working on. I chose a square neckline so I could show up pretty necklaces. I started by cutting out the collar carefully and then kept cutting until I reached the neckline I wanted.

T-Shirt Surgery

Now get your coloured shirt and lay it out…

T-Shirt Surgery

Cut the back section from the shirt, you want to remove all of the seams. You will end up with something this shape.

T-Shirt Surgery

Lay the pink version over the white shirt. You should cut the sides and the neckline to match the white shirt. The pink part should be on the same side as the writing/pattern you want on the front of the shirt. You’ll end up with this:

T-Shirt Surgery

Now you should use your overlocker (or sewing machine) to stitch up the sides. Start from the bottom and sew towards the sleeves, continue until there’s no hole left ^_^

T-Shirt Surgery

Now at the top where the straps of the pink part are, there should be a strip of interfacing on the white shirt. Sew the pink to the white. Most shirts have it but if yours doesn’t just sew it into whatever seam is there.

T-Shirt Surgery

You end up with this (although mine is terribly hand stitched).

T-Shirt Surgery

Now move over to the sleeves, cut around 4cm off the ends. Repeat on the other side.

T-Shirt Surgery

Measure a piece of thin elastic around the top of your arm and cut in two.

T-Shirt Surgery

Sew the elastic around 4cm from the edge of the sleeve. While you sew stretch it to the correct size so when it’s unstretched it will form a ruffle. Mine looks a bit dodgy because it’s hand stitched >_<

T-Shirt Surgery

So how you have something like this πŸ˜€

T-Shirt Surgery

Turn your shirt the right way out now and fold it in half down the middle with the pattern facing out. This next part is all about measuring. From the bottom of your pattern (my pattern is the slogan on the front) fold the shirt in 3 sections. Place a small marker at each fold.

T-Shirt Surgery

Flatten the shirt out again but keep it folded in half. The pink strip below is marking how far in were going to cut, it should be as far in as the markers are apart. It’s a little hard to explain but it should kind of form a square.

T-Shirt Surgery

Now do the actual cutting! DO NOT CUT THE PINK FABRIC! Only cut the white.

T-Shirt Surgery

Repeat on the other side so you end up with this:

T-Shirt Surgery

Now we’re going to make the sections into little bows πŸ˜€

T-Shirt Surgery

Cut 3 strips of the hem of the pink shirt.

T-Shirt Surgery

Fold them in half and use them to form the center of the bow. Sew it all in place like this:

T-Shirt Surgery

On the bottom bow place a small holding stitch through the white and pink so the bottom bow will keep it’s shape.

T-Shirt Surgery

Now let’s go back to the neckline! Cut the rest of the hem off the pink shirt and measure it out like this:

T-Shirt Surgery

Sew along the seams that are already there. Do the sides first and continue around the back.

T-Shirt Surgery

Add a final piece to the front and cover the edges ^_^

T-Shirt Surgery

I decided to add some chiffon flowers to the neckline just to girly it up some more. I’m going to add more as soon as I can unpack my craft supplies and dig them out XD

T-Shirt Surgery

And so there you have it! Finished and much more my taste than the original πŸ˜€

T-Shirt Surgery

And of course it’s time to try it on!

T-Shirt Surgery

Close up of the bows…

T-Shirt Surgery

Mwahaha and no I’m not conceited enough to think I’m *actually* famous in the blogosphere, it’s just meant to be cute and funny πŸ˜›

T-Shirt Surgery

Well there you go, my first attempt at t-shirt surgery and I’m pretty happy with the results! So much so that I’m going to wear it tomorrow to the going away party that Nuffnang is throwing James and I πŸ˜€ I even made a little matching surprise but you’ll have to wait for the event to see!
Love Violet
What do you all think? Should I made more of these? Would you ever actually try a t-shirt surgery tutorial like this?

Sneaker Sunday- Week 2

So you might have read all about Sneaker Sunday last week, if not go and have a look here to see what all the fuss is about!!

A lot of you wanted some tips and ideas for what to wear sneakers with… so for week two we wanted to give you some co-ordination ideas πŸ˜€

*edit* Disclaimer- Just wanted to point out that a lot of these shoes are from YesStyle who currently have an advertisement on the sidebar of my blog via Nuffnang, I wrote this post long before I knew I was getting ads from YesStyle so please don’t think this is a sponsored post because it’s not! I just happen to love a whole lot of stuff from there because it’s cute!*/edit*

Sneaker Sunday Co-ordination ideas!

Today I want to focus on wearing cute, comfortable shoes to more dressy events or just dressed up enough for a day out on the town! Sneakers are great but they aren’t appropriate for some events.

Photos used are credited below and are not mine. I will be happy to remove if asked by the owner.

Shoe 1: Lady Bug Flats

These are completely adorable. Because they are shiny they can either be a nice statement piece or as part of a bright outfit like the one I put together below. I would wear this to a nice night out.

Sneaker Sunday

Outfit details:
Dress- 50’s style flared dress
Cardi- Polka dot with peter pan colour
Headdress- From Equip, pill box hat with feathers

Sneaker Sunday

Shoe 2: Ballet Dancing Shoes

Pretty much any of the shoes that I’m posting can be dressed up or down. These cuties would be fantastic for a long walking shopping trip and with a few good accessories could be dressed up for an evening dinner. The big ribbon bow keeps everything really feminine so keep the co-ordinate light and girly. You could even replace the ribbon depending on the colour you’re wearing.

Outfit details:
Dress- Target
Cardigan- Myer
Headband- Diva
Stockings- Myer (but they don’t sell them anymore)

Shoe 3: Diamante bow shoes

The first thing that I thought when I saw these shoes was of my good friend Trashtastika’s tutorial on how to make a crown headband. You can see the tutorial here, and it would be the perfect co-ordinate for these shoes!

Outfit details:
Dress- patterned grey dress from Myer
Cardigan- Ballet style from a thrift store
If it’s a bit cooler, pair it with some opaque black or grey stockings.

Sneaker Sunday

Shoe 4: Black and White Alternative Shoes

These shoes have a distinctly punkish feel to them, you could wear them with a Kodona or other boy-style outfit. For a more rockabilly inspired look, pair them with the cutest floofy dress you own. I chose the girly path (surprise) and chose a mostly black and white outfit with just a splash of bright colour to make it a little more interesting! It reminds me a bit of a bowling outfit!

Shoe 5 and 6: Pink Lacy Ballet Flats and Pink Quilted Flats

This next outfit is to show you how different flats can give a completely different fee to an outfit.

Outfit details:
Dress- Handmade floral and lace design
Headband- Gift from a friend

Sneaker Sunday

Now if you were wearing that dress for a nice warm summer day out, you could easily wear it with the lace pink flats below. They are very delicate and are a lovely summery. They don’t over power the outfit but they would be a nice point of interest.

Sneaker Sunday

These pink quilted shoes are my favorites overall! While they do have a tiny heel for the most part they are flat enough that I don’t think they would cause any discomfort at all even if you wore them all day. They really remind me of the kind of shoes I thought princesses wore when I was a little girl ^_^ I would wear white stockings with the above outfit and use these as a statement piece to draw attention.

Shoe 7: Pink Suede Walking Shoes

These shoes I fell in love with at first sight. The little ties at the front give them an interesting shape which is a nice change from the thousands of ballet flats out there! They are ideal for times you know you’re going to be doing a lot of standing and could look cute worn with out without stockings. I think these would look very cute worked in with a Mori Girl co-ordinate. My co-ordinate is more along the lines of how I would wear them though.

Outfit details:
Jacket- Angelic Pretty

Sneaker Sunday

Shoe 8 and 9: Red Sneakers and Blue Bow Sneakers

This is another double co-ordinate to show that even the humble old sneaker can be dressed up enough to be good for a more formal event. The outfit I’ve picked for these two is a nautical/sailor inspired.

Outfit details:
Dress- Yacht dress thrifted
Nautical scarf- also thrifted

Sneaker Sunday

These bright red sneakers are a great addition to this dress as they follow the traditional red/white/blue nautical colours and they are a more feminine shape than traditional sneakers. The bow on the top is a nice touch and as long as they were clean and presentable they would be perfectly appropriate for a day time event.

Sneaker Sunday
Now if you wanted to wear the same outfit to a night event these next shoes would do the trick. The blue stripes continue the theme of the scarf and the dark plain fabric draws attention away from the lighter dress. The bow keeps it fun but they are still dressy enough for an evening event!

Shoe 10: Leopard Print Sneakers

Lastly we have some awesome leopard print sneakers! I’ve paired these ones with a bit of a fancy out on a town outfit! Leopard print is funny and a little bit really does go a long way! This one is definitely the kind of co-ordinate that is all in or nothing XD

Today’s post is short because I am editing the video for a Make Up Tutorial πŸ˜€

Sneaker Sunday!

Sneakers are the best thing in the world and for those of your who have been following me on Twitter, you are probably really sick of me going on and on about something called “Sneaker Sunday”…

Sneaker Sunday is an invention by the super awesome Valerie from Dweam.com and the general idea is that for one day a week we all give our feet a rest from high heels and the ridiculously painful (but super pretty) shoes we tend to wear through out the week! I am totally on board with this because for the most part hime style demands over the top decorated heels, but I think that with the right outfit totally over the top decorated sneakers can be just as good!

I have been an advocate of sneakers for the longest of times, my livejournal username was even “Chucks_bitch” in homage to high top Converse Chuck Taylors which I practically lived in for several years. I even own Baby the Stars Shine Bright’s Lolita take on the high tops!!

So what’s Sneaker Sunday?

Basically each week Val and I will post something related to Sneakers each Sunday, we will also feature photos of our Sneakers and great ways to co-ordinate them, tips and tricks etc.

Our motto is “Looking cute without crippling foot pain!”

This is my first Sneaker Sunday Co-Ordinate!

DSC_0429 copy

My sneakers are plain old cheap ones from Big W, they were originally completely white but I wanted something cuter so I deco’d them! The pink sections are completely opaque with shiny shiny glitter now, there are diamantes, pearls, bows and ruffles. Perfect for when I’m on the run doing lots of things but still want to look adorable ^_^

This is where you girls come in, we want to see your Sneakers!

Every Sunday we want to see your posts involving Sneakers πŸ˜€ If you make a post about it we will add your photos to the new Sneaker Sunday Gallery (which also has a place on my Snapshots page) with links back to your blog. If you’ve got a Twitter account use the hashtag #sneakersunday so we can find your posts!

If you want to submit your own photos just email them to me at: [email protected]!

Go have a look at Valerie’s first Sneaker Sunday post and I can’t wait to see yours!!

Outfit of the day Post- Visitors!

This is an outfit from earlier in the week when James’ childhood friend came to visit us! Floral Outfit I baked macarons that day which were an unfortunate failure. I was too overambitious and I doubled the ingredients and ended up with… one gigantic tray shaped macaron. Epic fail.

Floral Outfit

Outfit run down:

  • Floral dress- made by me
  • Jacket- Angelic Pretty
  • Shoes- Wittner, modified by me
  • Bow- by the awesome Susie!
  • Jewelery- random places, described below

Floral Outfit

I made these earrings with some little cake charms I bought in Melbourne πŸ˜€

Floral Outfit

I love the details on this jacket, it’s the perfect thickness to take out on nights when there is a bit of a chill but not too cold!

Floral Outfit

James bought me this ring. I told him if he ever wanted me to marry him, he would have to find something at least twice as big for my engagement ring mwahahaha! XD

Floral Outfit

I completely love this hair bow. I want one in every colour!

Floral Outfit

This little crown is my favorite detail on the AP jacket but I always find that because it’s so heavy it can swing around and damage things >_<

Floral Outfit

These shoes were my back ups for the Nuffnang awards ^_^ I bought them for $40 but I thought they were much too plain so I added the bow, flower, pearls, pleated ribbon and the diamantes around the buckles! I’ve had a request for a how to on a hime-style shoes tutorial out of normal shoes and I definitely want to do it but at the moment I can’t find any good shoes to start off with >_<

Floral Outfit

Bonus picture: OooOOOooOOOoo I’m a spooky ghoooooost!

Floral Outfit

Thanks for looking at my silly outfit!
