Hime Gyaru Phone Strap Version 1

I made a lot of phone straps as gifts this year, I like to have a supply of gifts already made which can be given at occasions which I don’t have time to prepare for or are unexpected.

The kind of straps are great for Lolita or Hime Gyaru friends and they are so easy to make!

You just need some pretty random lace/ribbon/flowers/felt/glue/pretty things.

So grab all of your pretty materials in one place.VioletLeBeaux-Hime-Gyaru-Phone-Strap-592_1392 copyArrange them together how you’d like, I prefer to have one main piece of interest, a couple of  smaller things and then ribbon and lace dangling down.So this is going to be the main part…VioletLeBeaux-Hime-Gyaru-Phone-Strap-594_1392 copy

And then dangling ribbons and lace behind it…

VioletLeBeaux-Hime-Gyaru-Phone-Strap-595_1392 copy

Glue the pieces together one by one.

VioletLeBeaux-Hime-Gyaru-Phone-Strap-593_1392 copy

Then the ribbons on the back.

VioletLeBeaux-Hime-Gyaru-Phone-Strap-597_1392 copy

Add a little metal link to the back so you can attach it to a strap later and cover all of the back with a piece of felt.

And that’s all there is to it!

Pretty phone/bag/whatever strap for a girl who likes pretty things and it look all of around 10 minutes to make.

This is a fantastic way to use up old things from your craft stash too so it’s win/win!

Lace Usamimi Sewing Tutorial

My obsession with usamimis continues, they’ve FINALLY made it over to mainstream fashion here which is pretty funny but I much prefer to make my own especially because they are pretty expensive. I did a tutorial a very long time ago on making an usamimi which I’ll be updating with some new instructions and a video next week but in the mean time I wanted to show you the variation on the usamimi which I’m loving at the moment…

The thin lace ribbon!

VioletLeBeauxP1040252_14630

These are so very simple to make so let’s get started 😀

You need:

  • Lace
  • Thin ribbon
  • Thin wire

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-43_1316 copy

First thing’s first, decide how long you want the usamimi to be and cut the lace to that length.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-44_1316 copy

Lay it flat on a table and place the ribbon over the top in the center like this. If you prefer you can pin it in place.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-47_1317 copy

Stitch down either side of the ribbon so it forms a tube with the lace. You want to get as close to the edge of the ribbon as possible so it looks neat and tidy. Sew one of the ends shut too but leave the other open as we’ll need to shove the wire in it.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-49_1317 copy

You should have something like this…

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-53_1317 copy

Now cut a length of wire which is a few inches longer than the lace.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-57_1318 copy

Fold the end of it over and twist so it forms a loop like the photo below. This loop will stop it poking out of the ends between the stitches.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-58_1318 copy

Poke it into the tube between the lace and ribbon.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-61_1318 copy

Thread it through all the way until you reach the other end of the lace.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-62_1318 copy

Twist the other end of the wire into a loop as well.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-65_1318 copy

Poke the wire in so it’s completely inside the tube and stitch it shut with some thread.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-66_1319 copy

Taadaa! you have a very pretty and versatile usamimi which you can use in the traditional way or in so many other ways because it’s basically a bendable piece of lace.

VioletLeBeaux-Lace-Usamimi-Tutorial-69_1319 copy

I’m very tempted to make a bunch of these in different colours because they’re a really good way to top off an outfit 😀

How to Make a Clay Rose – Quick Craft

Nice and simple craft today! I’ve been playing around with paperclay a lot and I’m even going to try to make my own paperclay sometime soon I think.

The thing that I always go back to when I can’t think of anything else to make with clay/sculpy/hard icing is basic roses.

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-96_1332 copy

So this is the way I make them ^_^

Start by rolling a heap of small clay balls in various sizes. You want small ones for the middle and large ones for the outer petals.VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-86_1331 copyUse a finger to smoosh the edge of one of the balls.VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-87_1331 copyIt should form a thin side and a thicker rounded edge which will end up being the round part of the petal.VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-88_1331 copy

Repeat with all of the petals so they are ready to work with. If you want you can dip your finger in water and smooth down any cracks in the edges but I prefer to leave them or even exaggerate them as it creates a really interesting effect.

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-89_1331 copy

To for the rose, start with a small petal and roll it between your fingers like this:

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-90_1331 copy

Roll the bottom of the petal together a little harder so it forms a stem:

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-91_1331 copy

Now add a slightly bigger petal and roll it around the other side so it encases the edge of the first petal.

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-92_1331 copy

Add another petal so it’s edge is in the middle of the second petal. As you go, roll the petals with a little bit more force at the bottom so the clay squishes together between your fingers to form a stem. Be careful not to disturb the petals when you do it though.

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-93_1331 copy

Continue adding petals this way going around the flower in a circular pattern starting the edge of each petal 1/3rd of the way across the previous petal.

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-95_1331 copy

Just keep going until you think you’ve got a good size and let it all dry!

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-96_1332 copy

If you want you can clean up the stem and roll it a bit more evenly, I generally cut it of so the flower sits flat in whatever craft I’m doing.

VioletLeBeaux-clay-rose-tutorial-97_1332 copy

Do you guys have something you automatically make? I seem to just make these on auto pilot whenever I get clay in my hands XD

Fossil Stella Boyfriend Aluminium Watch… Currently Reviewing

VioletLeBeauxP1040028_14411VioletLeBeauxP1040036_14419VioletLeBeauxP1040004_14387

Fossil Stella Boyfriend Aluminium Watch

Price: $199

Obtained: Loaned for review

Thoughts:

Fossil loaned me this watch for review over the holidays because they thought it suited the look of the site. While I used to be a little obsessive about watches I don’t really wear them anymore because I use my phone to tell time. The quality looked lovely, the colour was nice and I could see myself actually wearing something like this. Only problem I had was it was waaaay too big on my wrist so it looked pretty ridiculous on me. A smaller version I could definitely see myself wearing though.

I do wonder about the name though, I’m not sure any of my boyfriends would have wanted a dusty pink diamante encrusted watch 😉

Very pretty and if I wore watches I would definitely be looking at something like this.

How to Make an Usamimi – Sewing Tutorial

So quite a while ago, in fact I think it was almost 2 years ago, I wrote a tutorial on how to make an usamimi. I’m still loving them all of this time later so I thought I would rework the tutorial and show you and even easier way to do it.

This is what you’ll end up with…

VioletLeBeauxP1040248_14626
VioletLeBeauxP1040245_14623VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-58_1398 copy

What you need:

  • Fabric
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Wire

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-33_1396 copy

First thing you need to do is work out how long you want the usamimi to be and cut a rectangle of fabric to that size. Fold it in half on the long side (so it’s very thin and long) and cut the ends into slightly curved points. The photo below shows what the points should look like unfolded.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-36_1396 copy

This is what you should end up with, two points on each end.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-34_1396 copy

Fold it so the good side of the fabric is on the inside and start stitching at the crease. Go up to the point:

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-37_1396 copy
And back down the other side.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-38_1396 copy

Continue stitching all the way down the side until you reach the end of the other point.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-41_1396 copy

Tie off the thread and leave the other end of the point open.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-40_1396 copy

Turn the whole thing inside out through the hole at the point.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-45_1397 copy

If you need to, use something pointy like a pen to help push it all through.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-46_1397 copy

You should have something along these lines:

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-49_1397 copy

Cut a length of wire a few inches longer than the fabric is point to point. Fold one end of the over and twist so it forms a loop. This will prevent it from poking through the stitching on the other side.  Push the piece of wire into the usamimi through the hole and all the way to the other point.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-53_1398 copy

In the other tutorial I wrote the wire was stitched around the outside of the fabric, that works best if you have very thin wire, this technique works best if you have thicker wire.

Once the wire is all the way in, twist the other end in a loop too.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-55_1398 copy

Fold the edges of the hole under and hand stitch it completely shut.

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-57_1398 copy

Test it out by twisting it together and you’re good to go 😀

VioletLeBeaux-Usamimi-Tutorial-61_1398 copy

Very simple to do and super quick if you do them on the sewing machine too. If your fabric is very puffy you might like to topstitch the sides to flatten it a bit but I actually prefer the puffiness.

VioletLeBeauxP1040243_14621

Hope you guys enjoyed, there’s a video version of this coming soon too!

Customisable Alphabet Sleep Mask Sewing Tutorial

Quick note- The Pantene competition on my Beauty section has been extended until Monday so if you’re in Aus head over to enter!

After I made the kitty sleep mask James gave me an idea to make a customisable one which could spell out a message to people looking. His suggestion of what it should spell was somewhat… inappropriate but I loved the idea and so this is what came out!

custom-sleep-mask

So if you’d like to make your own customisable sleep mask you need:

  • Black felt
  • Thick velcro
  • Other felt for the letters (I’m using grey)
  • Needle/thread
  • Ribbon or elastic to attach it
  • Lace or more ribbon for edging
  • Matching thick ribbon or more felt to match.
Start by cutting out the mask shape from your black felt, this will be the backing that everything gets sewn to.
VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-41_1386 copy
Cut a piece of thick velcro which is the same width as the mask, the thicker the velcro is the bigger your letters can be so I chose a very big one. You will only need the pointy side of the velcro for this, not the soft one. The pointy side will hold felt letters fine but if you want to use something else to make the letters just add the soft part of the velcro to the back of them so they stick.

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-42_1387 copy

Now we need something to cover the edges and the rest of the backing. I had some pretty matching ribbon but you could also use some more felt. So cut a piece to go above and below the velcro like this:

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-45_1387 copy

The velcro makes it a bit harder to work with than regular fabric so pin it all in place.

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-46_1387 copy

And then cut it to shape.

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-49_1387 copy

To hold it all together you will need to edge it, I hand stitched some lace around all of the sides. If you didn’t want to use lace you could use matching ribbon or bias binding tape. Make sure you encase all of the raw edges in the lace so nothing can come undone later.

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-50_1387 copy

At this point you probably want to stop and have a bit of a giggle that you’ve inadvertently created a Kanye West style shutter glasses sleep mask XD If you’re into that kind of thing you could always just stop here haha!

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-53_1388 copy

Now you need a way of attaching it to your head, I sewed a piece of lace on each side to form ties but you could also use elastic.

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-54_1388 copy

Now cut out the words you want to spell from matching felt. If you want you could also cut out several options to use depending on your mood.

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-57_1388 copy

Press them firmly to the velcro and you’ve got a descriptive sleep mask!

VioletLeBeaux-custom-sleep-mask-tutorial-61_1388 copy

Now if the mask actually said what my brain thought when people wake me up from naps it wouldn’t be suitable for the internet 😉
