Time for some snap shots again 😀
No pretty architecture this time unfortunately because I didn’t really go anywhere… at all. In fact I haven’t left the house since Saturday because James caught the flu that my Mum had when she was here so he’s been bed-ridden for the last week. We were quite worried that he was relapsing into glandular fever again which would have been terrible!
So here are some more pictures from before he was ill!
When James‘ parents visited they took us out to the Mitre Tavern which is a steakhouse near our place.
The guy from some tv show called “Ghost Hunters Australia” was filming right above our table! How exciting!! We asked the waiter about it (who was really nice and super helpful btw) and he said that the place is haunted by a woman who hung herself there. Apparently all the staff are scared of her! :O
Luckly she wasn’t haunting the scallops I had… they were delicious 😉
The day that my Mum and I actually got to leave the house we pretty much just went to a whole lot of chocolate stores. You can see where my addiction comes from! The first on the list was Theobroma.
She got me the *best* thing anyone has ever bought me… a self heating mug!! You put a little candle in the base and it keeps your drink warm! I like to drink my tea slowly so this is PERFECT for me! I can’t tell you how awesome it is, I can drink the same cup for hours and it’s still steaming hot to the last sip. LOVE IT.
While we were making our way to the next chocolate place we bumped into a charity selling cute piggy merchandise to support families with a sick child. You can visit their website and donate here.
My Mum and I bought 2 pens and a piggy bank.
The pen is fully of liquid with glitter and two little piggies in it! SO CUTE!
After that we visited Haigh’s which is a famous chocolate store.
They had some delicious taste testers there! We got some chocolate berry balls and this little suitcase tin full of chocolate freckles. How adorable is the suitcase?? It’s the perfect size to keep my make up in my bag! The freckles inside are the best I’ve ever had too.
Lastly we visited the Face Shop. I normally don’t like to go into the one in the CBD because the staff have been very unfriendly in the past but this time I met the owner and she is just so lovely! I will definitely go back next time I see her in there.
Our combined haul! I’m really looking forward to trying out some of those masks, my skin could really use it right now >_<
The last thing we did before she went home was visit a tiny little Japanese lunch place I’ve been wanting to do to for aaaages called Don Bay. According to James it has 100% positive reviews so we have been looking for an excuse to be able to try it.
It’s absolutely tiny! There were 3 chefs in that tiny space :O
Me with the very important number.
I had the unatama bento. I’ve never had eel before but I really didn’t like this version of it. Everything else in the bento was delicious though.
Mum had the lunch box and it was massive. I tried it all too and it was super yummy.
James had katsu curry and it was delicious too! The wait was around 10min and it was completely worth it. Every thing (other than the eel) was delicious and really well priced too considering the volume of food.
VERDICT: Super yummy and I’m going to go again as soon as I can find another excuse!
Lastly a bonus shot of James enjoying his croissant at our favorite bakery.
I also got some really lovely packages in the mail this week too but the photos are still on my camera so you’ll have to wait until next time ^_^
Omg look a tutorial shock horror! One about storage no less 😛 See I am slowly catching up on everything, it’s just taking me a little while to do it. Next month I’ll even hopefully be back to posting every day ^_^
Anyway back down to it… a whole bunch of you have asked me about storage solutions and how to make mundane things look prettier. I’m slowly working through all the requests and today I’m going to show you how I store my rings and also my bobby pins. Hair flowers and pins that are stood up vertically (like this) are my absolute favorite kind because they are so versatile but they can be a little hard to store.
Today I’m making/decorating ring boxes!
What you need:
Ring display boxes (I happened to find these for $1 each at a jewelery store which was closing down. You can easily make your own using a cardboard box and some foam. You just need to cut it to size and then slice lines to place the rings in)
Glue gun
Stanley knife/box cutter
Adhesive spray (optional)
Fabric to cover it all with
Remove the piece of foam from inside your box.
Cut a square of fabric big enough to cover the section of foam. We will work on this piece first. The fabric I used is stiff black chiffon with tiny diamantes all over it. I thought about using pink and green to represent a garden for my flower pins to grow in but decided that this would fit more with the look I’m trying to achieve in my bathroom.
If you have adhesive spray use it to hold the the fabric flat on the front of the foam. This will make sure it’s all tight and possibly prevent fraying when we eventually cut it (depending on the type of fabric you have chosen).
Using your glue gun glue the fabric in place on the sides So the front section is nice and tight.
Now let’s do the box. Cut a strip of fabric long enough to go around the outside of the box. It will need to be wide enough to cover the outside as well as wrapping around to the inside surface and the back.
Use your glue gun to put a spot on each corner of the outside and wrap around the fabric. Fold the extra over onto the back of the box and glue it in place.
You should have something like this:
Fold the left over into the box and glue in place.
Now take the covered piece of felt and glue it into the box.
Take your stanley knife and cut through the fabric where the pre-cut lines in the foam are.
This is mine looked like after I cut it… If you had used adhesive spray yours would look neater:
Now it’s time to put in all your hair pins and rings in!
Taadaa…
I stacked by boxes in my bathroom so they took up less space while displaying everything really nicely.
Hurrah new cute display boxes that let me see every thing and make it much easier to grab things quickly in the morning.
Nuffnang was nice enough to send James and I to see a new movie called “Easy A“. To be honest when I first got the tickets I wasn’t thrilled at all. I don’t like the typical American teen comedies that have been popular in the last few years. I just don’t think gross out stuff is funny at all and having seen the trailer it looked kind of… meh. James loves those kind of movies though so I went along for the ride.
I’m actually really glad I went because the movie was the complete opposite of what I was expecting.
This is how it’s described by Sony:
After a little white lie about losing her virginity gets out, a clean-cut high school girl Olive Penderghast sees her life paralleling Hester Prynne’s in “The Scarlet Letter”, which she is currently studying in school – until she decides to use the rumour mill to advance her social and financial standing.
And this is the trailer:
I understand it from a marketing point of view but it only describes one aspect of what is a fairly complicated film. The actual movie is really smart, well thought out and involves some really serious issues like bullying. I think it struck a chord with me because I’ve been thinking a lot about bullying both online and in real life lately and what a disgusting pass time it is.
I can think of 2 examples even in the last few weeks where rumors in the blogosphere have been so out of control it has come to the point of death threats and people’s private information being leaked online. In both of those cases too it turned out that the rumors were completely unfounded and yet people were so quick to jump on the bandwagon that they destroyed their subject’s lives. Perhaps this is a lesson to all of us online that we should put less stock in gossip and take bullying like this a little more seriously.
I think this movie would appeal to anyone who has ever been the target of rumors or who have spread them. Even more so I think it would appeal to people like me who miss good old fashion teen movies of the 80’s and 90’s!
One of the most enjoyable parts of the movie was the mirroring of the novel “The Scarlett Letter” which got me thinking about which novel my life is currently similar to…
I thought it would be easier to draw you all a little comic strip, enjoy!
So competition time again!!
To enter to win a double pass to go see Easy A for yourself when it opens next Thursday just leave a comment answering the question:
Which book mirrors your life either now or when you were in highschool?
There are 5 double passes to give away and this competition is open to Australian residents only (sorry everyone else!!).
