How To Make A Cute Photography Backdrop

A lot of people have been asking me questions about blogging lately, I’m planning something quite large to help you all if you’re starting your own blogs but as a little taste today I’m going to show you how to create a really easy backdrop to make your photos cuter πŸ˜€

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Having nice photos doesn’t have to depend on a fancy camera there are lots of little things you can do to make your photos cute even if you don’t have a great camera. One very cheap easy example is making a cute backdrop to take them on~

What you need:

  • Cardboard
  • Pretty paper/fabric
  • Iron + ironing board
  • Glue/tape

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

I am using the paper that came on a bunch of flowers I was given. Very pretty and very durable since one side is covered in waxy-ness.Because it’s all wrinkled I decided to iron it. This is important otherwise your photos will have crinkles all over it! If you are ironing paper you should always use the lowest setting.

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

Get your large piece of cardboard and cut it to be around 1 inch shorter on each side than your paper.

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

Now fold one side of the paper over the edge of the cardboard and start gluing/taping it in place.

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

When you get to the corner fold it neatly on an angle.

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

Continue on all of the sides until you’re finished.

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

You get something like this…

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

Make two of them! The reason you should make two is so you can have one flat on the ground and one propped up at a right angle behind the item you’re photographing. This way when you take your photo you will have a nice consistent back drop no matter what angle you choose.

Photo Backdrop Tutorial

Now you just need to test it out πŸ˜€ Taadaa!

Cute Strawberry Felt Tart

So yesterday we were going to post you all a Sneaker Sunday tutorial on doing something very awesome with plain white sneakers but due to unexpected technical problems it will have to wait until next week. Sorry!

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

To make up for though it I’ve got a week of really cool posts coming up though and I’m planning to update my shop very soon with new deco items and make some other changes to the site to make it easier to find older tutorials etc πŸ™‚

While Celeste was in Singapore recently she picked me up some goodies! One of the things was this little craft kit on how to make a little strawberry tart thingy.

Obviously I can’t take any credit for making this tutorial because I was just following their instructions. Full credit goes to the original company but as I took photos while I was making it I though you might find it interesting anyway ^_^Β  You can find most of the materials around the house and you can easily substitute anything you like.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

It will end up like this:

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

What you need:

  • 3 circles of felt, light brown, dark brown and pink
  • 1 semi circle of felt, red
  • 1 rectangle of red/brown felt
  • Green felt for the top of the strawberry
  • Matching thread
  • Stuffing
  • 2 circles of cardboard the same size you want the base of your tart to be.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Start with the squishy pink inside. Get your thread and using a running stitch go around the outside of the circle a couple of mm from the edge. Don’t tie it off.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Pull the thread so it all crimps up.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Shove stuffing inside.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Add one of your cardboard pieces on top.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Pull tight as you can so it looks like this… Then tie it off and put it to the side.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Now let’s make the chocolate shell thingy. Get your two brown circles and thread.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Sew them in the same way as the pink part.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Put the other cardboard circle in the middle to act as a base.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Pull the thread tight so it comes up around the cardboard like this and tie it off.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Put the pink thingy inside. You can glue it if you want or stitch in place.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Now get your redish brown rectangle.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Roll it into a tube.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Using a dark brown thread you should tie it at one end and then spiral down to the other. Tie it off and hide the ends inside.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Strawberry time!

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Stitch little white lines in the pattern shown below…

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Fold the felt in half and then sew from the point to the top using a blanket stitch.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Flip it inside out.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Stuff that strawberry!

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Running stitch around the top and pull it tight to close it off.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Cut out a little green leaf part and stitch it on top. I personally think the strawberry looks a little skinny and sickly so if I was to make it again I would probably go with 3/4 of a circle instead of 1/2 of one. Also I think I would use a different shape for the leaves so they sit down in a cuter way.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

Stick it all together either with glue or thread and you’re finished.

Strawberry Tart Tutorial

This little yummy treat can be added to a different base depending on what you want it to be in the end. The pack included a magnet but I’m thinking I might want to put it on a hair accessory ^_^

Tomorrow I have a very special post (hopefully)… I’m only going to give you one clue though… I’m going to take you on a trip somewhere very special πŸ˜€

How to DIY Your Own Flatback Pearls

Yay we’re back to tutorials again today it’s how to DIY your own flatback pearls!

Still no real internet but dong my best. Thanks for sticking with me and I promise that all comments will be replied to very soon *fingers crossed*

DSC_0709 copy

Do you guys ever get to the end of a gigantic deco project and realize you don’t have enough jewels or pearls to finish? I HATE that feeling. I hate having unfinished projects too! Especially if I’ve ordered from overseas it takes forever to get another order ;_;

So this is a stop gap solution I’ve found to avoid having to wait for an order from overseas!

What you need to DIY your own flatback pearls:

  • String of cheap pearls or something round and the right size
  • Fimo or Sculpy clay
  • Sharp knife
  • White nail polish
  • Pearl nail polish (I’m using a Sally Hansen)

DSC_1226 copy

Ok first thing is first. Get your Fimo/Sculpey and using a colour you don’t like make a blob.

Using your string of pearls press in over half way to create a nice round dent.

DSC_1273 copy

Like this:

DSC_1274 copy

If you’re doing it with a loose pearl/bead then use a piece of thread to fish it out of the mold like this:

DSC_1275 copy

Now cook your mold according to the packet instructions.

Using the mold you’ve just created start making pearls. Do this by taking a large chunk of some Fimo/Sculpey pressing it into the mold, pulling it out and slicing it off the round part with a sharp knife. It will take some practice before you get the technique down ^_^

Now cook your pearls and let them cool. It doesn’t matter what colour you made them because it’s time to paint!

DSC_0593 copy

Lay your pearls out on paper or something you don’t mind getting polish on. Paint them white.

DSC_0595 copy

It will most likely take you a few coats of white if you started with a dark colour. You can see I was experimenting with a few other pearls shapes below too ^_^

DSC_0597 copy

This is roughly what you want to end up with:

DSC_0598 copy

Now lets turn them into pearls!

DSC_0599 copy

This takes a few coats too. Make sure you let them dry completely before each new coat or they will never dry properly!

DSC_0600 copy

Peel them off the paper and you will end up with something like this:

DSC_0698 copy

If you made them with a dark colour you might want to paint the bottoms too but it might effect how well they stick for deco projects.

DSC_0702 copy

So they are not perfect and they aren’t as good as store bought ones buuuuut they are perfect space fillers in deco projects and once they are surrounded by other jewels you will never tell the difference ^_^

DSC_0709 copy

So yay for tutorials again! Let me know if any of you diy your own flatback pearls, I’d love to see how they turn out!

Decoden ahoy! Review- The Sticker Monster Review/Mini Decoden Tutorial

Almost 3 weeks ago Jolene at The Sticker Monster sent me a package of fun things to review for your guys and seeing as I have such a sweet spot for deco I just couldn’t say no to making a decoden tutorial πŸ˜€

This is a super long post but stay with me because I’m going to show you how to make a whole bunch of really cool things!

Now onwards to the review!

DSC_1269 copy

This was the package that arrived on my doorstep… I couldn’t believe how much was packed into it! The delicate items were very well protected and nothing was damaged at all. It took around 1 week to arrive from Malaysia. Shipping- 5/5I had to giggle at the adorable business card!

DSC_0633 copy

So what was inside?

DSC_0630 copy

Several packs of Swarovski crystals in many colours and sizes. I’ve never used Swarovskibefore so I was really excited to try them out.

DSC_0637 copy

Lots of yummy plastic cabochon, pretzels, flowers, whipped cream and chocolates! This was my favorite part of the package, mwahaha more sweets to add to my collection!

DSC_0639 copy

10 fimo fruit canes in some really fun designs.

DSC_0641 copy

Pre-glued jewels on sheets in cute designs

DSC_0643 copy

Pre-glued pearls, big jewels and mini boullions in gold and silver.

DSC_0644 copy

Of course there was a whole host of their trademarked stickers! Glow in the dark, glittery and little hearts, totally adorable!

DSC_0645 copy

Prestuck felt sheet and furry leopard fabric sheet.

DSC_0646 copy

Jolene was also lovely enough to include 2 sheets of special deco protection paper. Basically the idea is that you glue your deco design to the sticker and then put it on your expensive items (laptop/cellphone/whatever) and then if you don’t like the design/want to sell your laptop you can remove it with no damage!

DSC_0648 copy

So I think the questions you’re all asking by now is “What on earth did you do with all of these supplies??”…

Well I was a little overwhelmed with all the design ideas so it took me a while to decide what to do first XD

DSC_1239 copy

First thing I did was decorate my make up brushes!

So you need:

  • Make up brushes
  • Preglued jewel stripes
  • Scissors

DSC_0731 copy

It’s really easy to do… just measure how many rows of jewels you need while they are still on the plastic, remove the plastic, stick them down and press down for a minute to make sure the glue sticks. DSC_0734 copy

I chose to add the jewels at the top of the metal band because it won’t interfere when I need to wash them.

DSC_0736 copy

I had some jewels left over so I added a stripe to each of the ends ^_^

DSC_0740 copy

Very easy to do and very pretty no? Over the last 3 weeks I’ve used my brushes every day and washed them as per usual with no damage at all. The only tip I have is don’t submerge the pre-stuck jewels in water, if you do by accident just pat it dry with a paper towel.

DSC_0739 copy

I liked it so much that I did my Magical Pick deco tool as well! My lovely friend Jinsent this to me and as soon as I can get the proper internet back I’m going to tell you all about it!

DSC_1302 copy

Now onto some real nail art πŸ˜€

DSC_1277 copy

Have you guys ever used fimo canes? They are so much fun! I’ve actually got pretty much a lifetime supply of them now because the delightful Jacie sent me a bunch of them which are going to be featured in another tutorial too ^_^

So I’ll cover the basics here… they are made of fimo or sculpy and they come in sticks with pretty much any design you can think of.

DSC_1255 copy

Using a *very* sharp knife you cut them into small slices. This can be really tricky because they like to roll around. I got around this by taping the cane to the cutting board so I could have more control with my hands.

DSC_1256 copy

You want the slices to be *really* thin because it makes them more flexible to shape around your nails when you stick them on.

DSC_1262 copy

Apparently you can get over 100 slices from one cane sometimes! I got sore hands after cutting for a while so I made James finish them off XD I cut them all up at once so I never have to do it again!

DSC_1260 copy

DSC_1264 copy

Keeping on the topic of nailart… these are the nails that I’ve been wearing for the last two weeks. Over two weeks I managed to move house with these babies on so they were super durable!

DSC_1204 copy

I used the little silver boullions to fill in spaces between the diamantes, it gives it lots of extra punch!

Heehee typically I managed to lose my first nail like 20min before James was ready to take the photos yesterday *_* You can spot one of the little fimo cane bows from Jacie in there too ^_^

DSC_1205 copy

I decided to experiment by using a big fabric bow this time too. It was very durable and went well and by using hand sanitiser a lot I was able to keep it nice and hygienic. Cute but I probably wouldn’t do it again because I fiddled with it too much! You can see the nails survived the move by my skin didn’t, time for a hand treatment!

DSC_1208 copy

Next it’s sticker time!

I’ve been looking at ways to deco my laptop for a while, I deco’d the entire front section twice but didn’t like either design. The second I saw these little heart shaped stickers I knew I wanted to stick them to my keyboard!

DSC_1216 copy

It’s fairly self explanatory… I just stuck them on randomly ^_^

DSC_1219 copy

I also used some matching yummy macaron/sweets stickers that the lovely Trashtastikagave me and went crazy with them!

DSC_1222 copy

LOVE the finished product and it’s a great starting point to inspire the rest of my laptop’s design. I’m going to use the deco protection sheets on the back of my laptop and start again with an even better design!

DSC_1223 copy

This next project was probably my biggest overall… I was very inspired by the leopard print fabric and the pre-glued deco sheets to finally decorate my little handy camera and it’s case πŸ˜€

DSC_1225 copy

First thing I did was add some of the little black rose stickers to all of the buttons on the back of the camera. They were the perfect size! The flash from the camera makes them look kind of shiny but in natural light you can’t see the sticker part you only see the black roses with silver outlines.

DSC_1226 copy

Nice and classy unlike the rest of my design which pretty much slaps you in the face with the pink πŸ˜‰

DSC_1228 copy

I used the prestuck jewels and the sticky leopard print for the case. DSC_1233 copy

Again this was one of the easiest project I’ve ever done… I stuck the sheet of jewels on the front of the case, it fit perfectly!

DSC_1230 copy

And I stuck leopard print on the rest of the case. I added a stripe of lace to cover the line… and that’s it!

DSC_1287 copy

I keep it in my purse all the time and it’s been really great, none of the jewels have come off the sheet which surprised me as I’ve always assumed they aren’t very durable. Very happily surprised!

DSC_1290 copy

DSC_1232 copy

Now on to the actual camera! I wanted this to be sweets themed but I didn’t want it to be completely crazy. It also needed to fit back in the case which was a bit of a tight fit to begin with *_*

DSC_1235 copy

I played around with the design a bit and decided that this would be perfect to try out using Swarovski‘s for the first time! DSC_1244 copy

I used a lot of the cabachons, the prestuck pearls (which I removed the stick backs from and glued down) and several colours of crystals. This is what I ended up with after around an hour!

DSC_1243 copy

Totally cute but not too crazy!

DSC_1269 copy

Like?

DSC_1266 copy

I got a request a little while ago from a reader asking for cute ideas to store nail art supplies and nails there is another tutorial coming on this as well but here’s a quick and easy idea for you!

This is one of the boxes I keep my supplies in…

DSC_1246 copy

It took me about 2 minutes to cut out the sticky backed felt and cover the box! SUPER EASY.

DSC_1248 copy

It needed a little something extra so I added some of the other cute stickers in the pack ^_^

DSC_1250 copy

This is completely random but this is the rest of the sheet the stickers came on… all the cutest ones like the little bears weren’t actually cut out as stickers XD I just cut them out and stuck them on anyway!

DSC_1251 copy

Last but not least I used some of the other Swarovskicrystals to jazz up a little heart photo thingy that I got aaaages ago. I put in some purikura of James, Susie and I and deco’d around the edges.

DSC_1274 copy

Sorry Susie parts of you got covered in jewels ;_;

DSC_1271 copy

I really loved using the Swarovski‘s, they certainly do shine a hell of a lot more than acrylics! They are much heavier but I think they are going to be so much more durable too. Love durability!

DSC_1275 copy

So now you’ve seen all the fun things I got to make here’s my final review on The Sticker Monster!

Communication-

Every email I sent was replied to very very promptly, in fact I don’t think I ever waited more than about 12hrs for a response about anything. If you live in Malaysia Jolene also has her mobile number online for inquiries and even arranged meet ups if you want to buy a certain number of products. To top that off she is super polite, very friendly and really knows a whole lot about her products. She actually collects and uses them herself so if you have questions about anything she has proper first hand knowledge.

Prices-

All of the prices are in Malaysian currency (RM). When converting to Australia Dollars the prices are really cheap! Things like the sticky fabric sheets and pre-stuck jewel sheets were around half the price of what I’ve seen them for in shops here in Aus. Even when you factor in shipping it’s still much more cost effective.

Quality-

I didn’t find one single piece in the selection I got that I wasn’t happy with the quality. A lot of the things like the jewel sheets and the Swarovski‘s far exceeded my expectations. Even little things like comparing the silver/gold boullions to ones that I had previously ordered from a nailart site in bulk, the Sticker Monster boullions were slightly larger, shinier and more uniform in size than the bulk ones. Couldn’t be more pleased with everything.

Overall-

Considering the prices, exchange rate, ridiculous number of products actually available on the site and the super friendly service… I’m already putting together a mental order list πŸ˜€ DO WANT!!!

Let me know if you have suggestions for another decoden tutorial!

No-Knit Yarn Strawberry Tutorial

Today’s yarn strawberry tutorial comes complete with a shout out to the super awesome Trashtastika at the Fashionate Traveller!

Recently she took a trip to Japan and I was incredibly jealous of the fabulous time she had ^_^

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Lo and behold a package arrived on my door step…

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

How lovely was she to pick me up presents?! Everything else will be used in other posts but today I want to show you this:

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

It is a bow pin that came off a mini top hat by Baby the Stars Shine Bright with little dangly crocheted strawberries. These strawberries are a reoccurring theme among several Lolita brands and you can easily make cherries with the same pattern.

I wanted to make my own crochet or knitted pattern to make lots of these because they are so cute! But here’s the thing… there are lots of you crafty people out there who can’t knit or crochet so I set about finding the easiest way in the universe to make them that didn’t involve anything fancy or complicated that even the most un-crafty person could do… let me know if I succeeded πŸ˜€

What you need:

  • Green yarn
  • Red yarn
  • Needle and thread (in red for the strawberry and in white for the seeds)
  • Scissors

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Cut 6 long pieces of the red yarn, the length I used was as long as my arm span but I had lots left over so you could use less. Also I am using 8 ply yarn which is why I need 6 pieces, if you are using something thicker then you might only need 3.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Tie the pieces together at the end with a knot.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Now plait the yarn and when you get to the end tie it in another knot. If you don’t know how to plait check here. You get something like this:

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Do the same this with the green yarn but this time use only 3 strands not 6.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

I am going to use white thread in these next parts so you can see what I’m doing but you should use red so it matches the yarn. Also ignore all the paint on my hands, I took these photos while I was waiting for another tutorial project to dry, I can’t wait to show you which one!

So anyway thread your needle. Take one end of the red plait you made and curl it around on itself. hold it in place with a stitch like this:

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

This is the bottom of your strawberry! Now keep following the spiral you started and stitch in place.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Put it on the edge of your thumb to shape it more into a rounded bottom. Also you can cut the loose ends off around 1cm from the knot to make it easier to see.

This is it from the outside:

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

And this is it from the inside so you can see my stitching

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Continue with the spiral pattern for several more rows, it should follow the rough shape of your thumb ^_^ In the photo below I’ve added white lines so show you where each row of the plait is.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

See how it fits perfectly on my thumb? Maybe I’ll start a new trend… thumb warmers coming soon to a store near you!

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

When you think you’ve done enough rotations (I did 7) you should pull your thread tight like a drawstring so it closes the hole at the top slightly.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Cut the rest of the plait off leaving a tail of around 20cm or so.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Grab the end of the plait along with any left over scraps of yarn have.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Scrunch it into a ball.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

And stuff that ball inside the strawberry, this is what’s going to act as the stuffing.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Now use your thread to pull the gap completely closed ^_^

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Tie it off and you have a big fat strawberry ball!

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Now let’s make a stalk!

Grab your green plait and tie it to the top of your strawberry.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Cut it off at however long you want the stalk to be and tie in a knot to stop it coming undone.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

With the rest of the green plait sew it next to the first knot like this:

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Make the plait form a loop and stitch the top in place… this will form a leaf πŸ˜€

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Continue making leaves around the whole top of the strawberry and stitching them in place like this:

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

When you reach the beginning again, twist the plait once more around the stem to hide the knots and any loose ends. Stitch in place.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Cut off any extra plait and hide the end under one of the leaves. Stitch it securely so it doesn’t unravel.

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

Now add little white stitches all over the strawberry for seeds ^_^

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

And you’re finished! Yes it may have taken a little more effort than a seasoned knitter or crochet..er(?!) might have taken but you don’t have to learn a whole new skill just for one tiny accessory!

Add some ribbon and some lace and you’re well on the way to a cute accessory πŸ˜€

No Knit Strawberries Tutorial

What do you guys think? Let me know if any of you make a yarn strawberry too!

How to Travel in Style with Violet

I’ve done quite a bit of traveling in my time and I love exploring new and interesting places but I always try to travel in style.

I try to make my everyday life as beautiful as possible and traveling is no different. You won’t find me in sweat pants and thongs (or flip flops for my American readers), I want to feel as pretty leaving a 7 hour flight as I do going out to dinner!

So with my recent trip to Singapore I thought it was the perfect time to show you all how I travel in style. This is a compilation of tips I’ve picked up on my travels and my “must have” items for along the way.

First thing’s first…

Take something lucky

I’m not a superstitious person by nature but there’s a story behind this one! The day before we went to Singapore James and I were doing some last minute shopping in the city. I was feeling a little light headed so we stopped at McDonalds for some fries. As I was walking away I checked my change and what should be there but a Singaporean 10 cent piece!!

DSC_0016_091016_3027

I was so surprised, normally if I get anything foreign in my change it’s New Zealand currency. This seemed so random and fateful that I kept it in a special compartment in my bag the whole trip!

DSC_0014_091016_3029

On the plane:

Take some good headphones (and an ipod if you want to listen to *good* music). I hate airplane headphones, they are usually uncomfortable and don’t block outside sounds. Also they aren’t anywhere near as cute as mine! Headphones are super easy to deco, even if you have little ear bud ones a few diamantes will jazz them up nicely!

DSC_0060_091018_3045

Keep hair and make up simple but elegant.

If you want to do make up, take a kit with everything you need for touch ups before landing. Keep in mind that you might need to sleep in what you’re wearing. I love false eye lashes because they are hard to mess up even in your sleep! On flights to and from SG I wore little individual lashes on the corners of my eyes for a little punch with no effort (review on the lashes soon). I did my hair in Kitty Rolls which were comfortable, survived sleeping but still looked cute.

Below are some of my travel essentials. Clear zip pouch with make up and liquids, letter writing kit, wet naps, face washer, mini sewing kit and bag tags for checked in luggage.

DSC_0604

A cute travel document holder is an essential.

I would be forever loosing my boarding pass or passport if I didn’t have something this bright to remind me! I deco’d this one myself.

DSC_0052_091018_3053

And of course a matching passport holder helps too πŸ˜‰ These are all made of suede so they feel soft enough to be used as a pillow if it’s an emergency!

DSC_0049_091018_3056

A sleeping mask

Something overly cute suits best! I want to be adorable even when I’m asleep so I picked the sugariest thing I could possibly find ^_^

DSC_0053_091018_3052

A jacket

Take it on the plane with you, seriously. Even if you’re going to a hot destination the plane is always freezing and those little blankets don’t help. Good protection against the rain too.

DSC_0583

Things to keep you entertained.

I take pens, note book, DS and games and well as my little UFO hand massager which is awesome for when you just want to relax. I am a very fidgety person so I take as many little things to play with as possible. With this I can continue my Japanese lessons on the DS then practice kanji or sentence structure in my note book.
DSC_0585

Candy!

Candy is good to pop your ears in the plane and also tastes great. And they are a good conversation starter if a cute boy is sitting next to you πŸ˜‰
DSC_0577

<
p style=”text-align: center; color: rgb(204, 51, 204);”>Beating the climate bug

  • Pick clothes that are appropriate for your situation. Fabrics that don’t wrinkle or require ironing are great for long flights but synthetic fabrics are horrible in hot climates! On the plane to SG I wore a cotton printed cord dress with a lace cardigan over the top.
  • Fabric choice is important. While in the heat in SG I wore thin stockings, cotton dresses and cardigans. Everyone was sweltering in the heat, even though I was wearing more layers I was cool because I was wearing fabric that could breathe.
  • Layering is the key to being ready for any weather! Cardigans are awesome, you can dress them up or down, take them off if you’re hot or add a jacket if you’re cold.Β

    Weapons of choice:

A fan

I picked this one up for $0.70 and added bows, diamantes and lace. They are compact and can be invaluable in the heat. They can also be used to hide yawns behind in boring situations, keep your coughs or sneezes to yourself or whisper gossip to a friend πŸ˜‰ Keep it in your hand bag!
DSC_0003_090929_2805

A singlet

Singlets are the ultimate versatile piece of travel clothing. Wear during the day if it’s hot, layer with a cardigan to go out to dinner, use as pajamas or as swimmers if you’re in a pinch. Cute pajamas are surprisingly important, if you have luck like mine you’ll end up outside at 2am for a fire drill chatting to the other hotel patrons so this is probably not the right time to sleep in the nude πŸ˜‰ Be prepared for anything because holidays are all about going with the flow!
DSC_0062_091018_3043

Sun protection eg. a sun hat, sunscreen etc.

The sun is mean and evil, stay away from it! No one likes sun burn, it’s icky. Don’t stop protecting your skin just because you’re on holiday. ‘Nuff said.
DSC_0003_091018_3102

Sunglasses

… ok maybe not “‘Nuff said”… These are only half for the sun protection though. The other half is looking damn good! There is nothing classier that popping on some nice sunglasses when you’re not feeling 100%. Hide the bags under your eyes from the 7hr flight and look like a rock star πŸ˜‰
DSC_0614

A handbag sized umbrella.

These fold down so tiny there’s not much of an excuse not to have one. This one has an aluminum frame so it’s super light and is perfect in unpredictable weather or in place of a parasol.
DSC_0591

A scarf

I carry a scarf and a face washer with me pretty much all the time. The face washer was a gift from a friend in Japan, the lady’s bathrooms there don’t have hand towels so most girls carry their own but it’s also useful for mopping up spills on nice dresses, fixing make up, using as a small pillow and the list goes on!

The scarf is not only useful but looks damn stylish hanging off a handbag! Did your hair get ruined? Then wear it like a 50’s movie star. Forget the hot rollers? Use it for pin curls. Sudden hay fever attack and not a tissue in sight? Well you get the idea…

DSC_0613retouch

Other travel musts:

Gifts for the new friends you meet!

I didn’t get to hand any of these little babies out because we were just so busy but I really wanted to give them to the organizers at Nuffnang. It’s a really great idea to take something from your home country. These little kangaroo and koala toys didn’t cost much but I hand glued a bow and diamante to each to personalize them. That way your friends will have something cute to remember you by πŸ™‚ And you won’t feel awkward if someone gets you something nice because you’ll have something give back!

Slippers

You never know where you’re going to have to walk in your hotel. Whether it’s for that proverbial 2am fire drill or you want to visit a friend down the hall, you never know who’s icky feet have been there before you. Cute little ones like these only cost me $10 and they fold up to practically nothing in your suitcase.

Nail repair kit

I am a big believer in preparing for any situation, James says I should have been a girl scout. That’s why I carry a nail repair kit with spare nails, glue clear polish and anything else you might need.

Bags within bags within bags within bags…

This is important because it keeps everything nice and separate in your suitcase, no searching through the make up bag for a hair band because they have their own bags! Being organized is key to a fantastic wardrobe, if you are well organized you can find all the right accessories at a glance… and there are is always room somewhere in here for more little bits and pieces you buy along the way.

Tiny cute bottles.

These cost $1.50 per pair and they are some of the best things I’ve ever bought. This way you can take all of your usual bathroom liquids with you. You can even get ones with spray lids for things like curl enhancer. Very cleaver.

Business cards:

You never know who you’re going to meet while out and about and if you’ve got a blog or business then it’s a great idea to have a couple of business cards with you. Mine are double layered so there is my blog card on top and by graphic design card on bottom. They stand out because they are fastened with a bow in the top corner ^_^

Foreign currency

Don’t go anywhere without it. Some places don’t accept credit cards etc so make sure you check before you go, it’s always useful to have some foreign currency on hand for taxis etc anyway.

A bag full of cables for your various gadgets.

Definitely important so you can charge your ipod/laptop/phone etc. A power point converter is also a great idea. The most important part of this is the bag, don’t bother going searching through your whole suitcase just grab the bag. On the way home the bag also be used as carry on luggage for all that extra shopping πŸ˜‰

Luggage:

I hate not being able to find my luggage at the other end. I’m also paranoid because I’ve had luggage stolen before and no matter what compensation you get there are some things which can’t be replaced. So if it can’t be replaced, don’t pack it. I also hate that all luggage pretty much looks the same. Ideally I would have liked one of these babies by Hideo Wakamatsu but as we only discovered how broken our old cases were the day before we left, I didn’t really have time to shop for a new one :(… It’s made my dream list for next time though, in fact I would go as far as to say that this is my dream suitcase! (click the image for the specs)

So in lue of one of those beauties we borrowed plan old suit cases from James’ parents. To make it more memorable I tied some old crappy acrylic lace around it several times. James laughed at me but it worked, we spotted our bags in like 2 seconds at the other end and were out of there!

Super bright bag tags help too if you can’t afford a whole new suitcase.

When you get home…

Unpack everything as quickly as possible otherwise you’ll get lazy and it will never get done! I’ve left a suitcase for weeks before because I was tired when I got home and then got busy at work, don’t fall into the trap! It only took me like half an hour to unpack both of our cases this time.
