How To Make A Pompom Hair Tie Take 3

You’re probably all sick of pompom related tutorials by now… but I can’t seem to stop making stuff with them so you’ll have to suffer through it 😛

This is another version of the pompom hair ties that have been around, I think Daiso sells these particular ones too but this time rather than buying one I went straight to making it!

What you need:

  • Elastic
  • Needle and thread
  • Mini pompom yarn or pompom edging

Pompom Hair thing take 2 Tutorial

Cut a piece of elastic, the actual length will depend on how much hair you are planning to hold with this. Thread your needle at this point too. In this tutorial I’m using black thread so you can see what I’m doing but you should pick a colour that matches the yarn you have.

Pompom Hair thing take 2 Tutorial

Grab the end of your yarn lay it out on a table in a repeated “S” shape like this:

Pompom Hair thing take 2 Tutorial

The width of this shape should be 2.5 times the length that you want the loops of the pompoms to be on the finished hair tie. Keep going forwards and backwards until you’ve accumulated a decent amount…

Pompom Hair thing take 2 Tutorial

You want there to be enough to cover the piece of elastic when it’s completely stretched out like below. The blue line is how long the elastic is stretched.

Pompom Hair thing take 2 Tutorial

Take the needle and thread it through each piece of yarn along the line indicated in blue below. It should be around 1cm from the middle.

Once you reach the other side turn around and leaving a 2cm gap go back up the other side then tie it off.

So  after that you should have something like this:

Pompom Hair thing take 2 Tutorial

Next take the piece of elastic and thread it through the track that you just made

This is the result you want…

Tie or stitch the ends of the elastic together 😀

Done!!

Now that I know how easy these things are to make I want to make a whole lot of them in different ways!!

How To Make Hair Pearls

Awhile ago I posted a photo of an awesome hair style on my Cuties blog. The style had a bunch of diamantes on the side and there was discussion in the comments about how to do it. Puregirlblue remembered that she had some with velcro on the back so I figured why not make some with pearls and some other things!

This is probably the best photo I got of the pearls, I wore them to the Illamasqua counter opening.

Not really a tutorial because it’s a very simple concept.

Hair Pearls Tutorial

Take the scratchy side of some velcro…

Hair Pearls Tutorial

Cut it up

And glue it to the back of whatever you want to attach to your hair.

Hair Pearls Tutorial

I did some ribbon flowers, stars and pearls.

Hair Pearls Tutorial

Everything worked really well except the pearls because I didn’t think about the weight while I was doing it. I used glass pearls because that’s what I had on hand but they are way too heavy to be held in with jut the velco so as a quick fix I ended up using some eyelash glue to keep them in my hair on the night and using make up remover to take them out after. Like Aurorahime suggested putting real/glass pearls on the little  metal spirals to either lock them in or just use this technique with regular cheap plastic pearls, that works awesomely!

Just like SheFallsSoftly mentioned you really can do this with anything so next time your hair needs some extra bling this is something to think about 😀

How To Make Pompom Hair Ties Take 2!

These pom pom hair ties have been popular for quite a while but (until Daiso recently opened) over here they are very pricey. I made some a while ago out of regular pompoms but when I managed to find some of the actual yarn used for $2 I figured why not make a whole heap more!

This is the original:

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

These are the ones I made:

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

The purple/pink/blue one was from Daiso and was $2.80 and the ball of yarn below which could make like 20 hair ties was $2.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

What you need:

  • Pompom yarn
  • Scissors
  • Elastic

First thing first, cut 3 lengths of yarn with around 20 pompoms each and tie together at the end.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Now loosely plait them together in between the pompoms. Basically you want the pompoms themselves to be loose but the yarn between them to be bound together.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Something like this…

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Continue until you reach the end and tie together so it doesn’t come undone.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Get your piece of elastic and tie in a loop. The size will depend on how big you want the finished product to be. You could also just use a regular hair tie here if you’ve got one handy.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Starting with one end of the yarn tie it in a knot to the elastic around where the join is.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Pull the yarn through the elastic like this…

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

The pull it up and through the loop it forms at the top. Almost as if you were tying a knot. Pull tight leaving one cluster of pompoms at the top.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

This is what you should have…

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Keep tying with the rest of the yarn making loops and leaving one cluster of pompoms on the outside each time. It’s kind of like you’re doing a blanket stitch like this.

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

When you run out of yarn it should look something like this:

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

Tie off all the random ends and you’re finished!

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

All finished 😀

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial 2

It took me around 20min to make both of them and I think I like them more than the original! What do you guys think?

Cancan Hat Straw Boater Hat Modification Take 2!

I’m a sucker for a bargin and so when I saw a plain looking straw boater hat in Big W for $15 I grabbed it thinking there is no such thing as having too many hats 😀

Boater Hat Modification 2

Being in a hurry to wear it when James took me on a picnic I stitched a couple of flowers on the sides to wear it out. That was was a good lesson though because that day I learned that this hat is too big and blows off at the slightest breeze *_* So something had to be done!

Boater Hat Modification 2

First thing was to remove 3-4 layers around the edge to make it less of a big sun hat and more of a cute barbers shop quartets hat 😉

Boater Hat Modification 2

Basically to do that (just like my other cancan hat tutorial) I snipped the tread and unwound it.

Boater Hat Modification 2

The stitched the end in place…

Boater Hat Modification 2

Now to prevent it from falling off I got some combs:

Boater Hat Modification 2

Pulled off the decorations….

Boater Hat Modification 2

And stitched them on the inside. Now it attaches to my hair nice and snugly and won’t go anywhere!

Boater Hat Modification 2

Nice quick modification and very happy with the results 😀

Boater Hat Modification 2

I haven’t worn it out since the modifications but this is what it looked like before I did the brim, I’ll post more photos when I wear it out.

Snapshots

Tomorrow I’ll show you what I did with all the left over bits from the brim! Hint: I made someone else a really small hat XD

Cute Custom Decoden Baseball Cap

Firstly! As a lot of you probably know Queensland was recently flooded quite badly. That’s where I used to live before I moved down here to Melbourne. Nuffnang put together a charity auction to raise money for the victims and my donation was 4 sets of my nails. Currently the bidding is up to $20 for the package so please do go have a look because it’s a good cause and a huge bargain right now!!

Click here to visit the auction!

When I was a kid I pretty much lived in baseball caps and after looking through waaay too many gyaru photo dumps on Tumblr they started to grow on me again. Very practical for both Summer and covering dark roots 😉 After spying this one at a tourist store for $6 I set about making it much more “me”. Now it’s become know as my “I’m-busy-working-and-if-you-interrupt-me-right-now-and-I-lose-my-train-of-thought-I-will-beat-you-to-death-with-this-hat”… hatwork hat because I wear it when I’m writing important emails XD

Decorated Cap Tutorial

I wanted to make it match the shoes I decorated way back here so I pulled out all my supplies again ^_^

Decorated Cap Tutorial

What you need:

  • A cap to use as a base
  • Copic markers (or permanent pens like a sharpie)
  • Diamantes etc for decorating
  • Epoxy glue.

Decorated Cap Tutorial

I wanted to go for a pink leopard print again so I started by marking in light purple all of the spots:

Decorated Cap Tutorial

Next I used a darker purple to roughly mark the areas around the spots.

Decorated Cap Tutorial

I covered the entire back 2/3rds of the cap leaving the front plain.

Decorated Cap Tutorial

Next I filled in the background with light pink.

Decorated Cap Tutorial

At this point it should look something like this:

Decorated Cap Tutorial

Next I gave everything a second coat with the markers to darken it up and make it look much more like the pinks already on the brim ^_^

Decorated Cap Tutorial

Last it was time for a little deco to jazz up the front!

Decorated Cap Tutorial

I stuck the pearls, jewels and plastic heart on using epoxy and added a couple more on the crown above the “princess” embroidery.

Decorated Cap Tutorial

And that was it!

Decorated Cap Tutorial

Not exactly my every day look but I still think it’s adorable and I would totally wear it on casual days!

Decorated Cap Tutorial

The best part is that it’s completely custom so you can really do whatever design you like and have something completely unique ^_^ What do you guys think?

How To Make A Felt Daisy Headband

After searching for aaages for something cute to make for James that was daisy related (it’s really hard to make flowers look manly >_<) I gave up and decided just to make myself some hair accessories. I did actually find him something to make but that’s another post ^_^

This came out of an idea that Omega suggested on Twitter as she sent me a link from Future Girl’s blog!

This is what you end up with…

Daisy Hair Band Tutorial

What you need:

  • White felt
  • Needle
  • Ribbon
  • Yellow thread
  • Pen
  • Scissors

Start with the white felt and draw a circle, if you need to use something round to trace around.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Cut as many circles as you want daisies. I chose to make my headband with 5 because I think odd numbers work look better.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Find the centre of the circle by folding it in half twice and putting a pen dot where the folds intersect.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Now draw a small circle in the middle which will be the yellow part in the end. Then it’s time to cut the petals, below you can see the order in which to cut. You should cut from the outside edge and stop at the inside circle. You will end up with 12 petals, the crappy diagram at the bottom has lines to show the cuts XD

P1030308 copy

Now on each of the petals cut the corner off into a rounded point.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Repeat on the other side ^_^

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Now thread your needle with the yellow thread. You could either use thick embroidery thread or just double up like I did, if you use thin cotton you will be here forever.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Turn your flower over to the right side (the non-drawn on one) and running stitch around the centre circle. Pull the thread tight so the flower buckles a little and becomes more 3d and the petals stick up a bit.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Do a second round of running stitch in the gaps from the first one so it forms a complete circle of yellow:

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Now stitch across the circle like this:

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Then go back the other way so it forms a kind of cross hatching ^_^ and fills in the circle. Done!

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

Repeat for all of the daisies then sew them on to the ribbon ^_^ I used a green ribbon for the tie then added a yellow ribbon over the top as an extra dangly thingy.

Daisies Hairband Tutorial

And that’s it!

Daisy Hair Band Tutorial

Wear and enjoy ^_^

Daisy Hair Band Tutorial

Hope you enjoyed it! I’m feeling very Spring-ish today ^_^
