Making a Bunny Hair Scarf aka Usamimi Tutorial…

This usamimi tutorial is a reader request post, see I’m slowly making my way through them all!

Lately everywhere I turn around someone is wearing one of these funny little pointy scarves…

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Image found via Google, credit to the owner (who I couldn’t find). I make no claims to own this photo and would be happy to remove it should the owner have a problem with it’s use.

Apparently the points are supposed to look kind of like bunny ears depending on how they’re worn. They seem to be really popular in Gal fashions at the moment! I don’t know how much these go for but if they’re anything like other imported accessories they can get pretty pricey! Anyway a couple of you have requested a tutorial on how to save some money and make one so here it is! ^_^

What you need for this particular usamimi tutorial:

  • Fabric (for an alternative see below)
  • Scissors
  • Thin wire
  • Needle and thread

I decided to go one step further on the saving money front and instead of using fabric I saved time and effort by using a pair of stockings that I bought but didn’t end up fitting πŸ˜€ They had a cute patten so I’ve been looking for another way to use them and this is perfect!

So first step! If you’re using fabric, measure out how long you need the scarf to be (measure around your head and then add extra for the point little ears) and cut two long rectangles. Because I am using stockings I’ve skipped this step.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Now cut the ends into points. I folded mine in half to ensure that the ends were exactly the same shape.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

If you are using normal fabric then sew down the straight sides to form a long tube (don’t sew the ends yet!). If you’re using stockings then you already have a long tube like below ^_^

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Now get your thin wire ready! I am using 2 lengths of wire because the wire I had was too thin to shape the fabric properly. So cut a length of wire that is long enough to go all the way around the outside of your tube. Leave an extra few inches so there is room to tie the ends together.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Turn your tube inside out. Fold the wire in half.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Using your needle and thread, sew up the pointy end. Use a plain old running stitch, nothing fancy. I’m hand stitching because my sewing machines are all in storage but if you can use a machine or an over-locker I would definitely suggest it!

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Now let’s start adding the wire, this is what will make the ear parts nice and stiff. Line the wire up with the point and starting from there use a blanket stitch to attach the wire to the edge of the fabric. When you stitch you should only pick up a few threads from the fabric, this will ensure that when you turn it inside out you can’t see gigantic stitches.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Keep going all the way down the side until you reach the other open edge. If you started out with fabric that you sewed together then you might just be able to weave the wire through the stitches you already made.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

When you get to the other end use a running stitch to close up one side and then continue with the wire up the edge. You should have a little wire overlapping the edge which we will use to close it up later.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Now repeat along the other side but stop when you reach the opening.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Now using the hole, turn the whole thing inside out…

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

This is roughly what you should end up with…

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

And as you can see I have left over wire poking out from the top.

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Cut the wire down so it’s only 1cm longer than the tip, then twist the two ends together and fold them down. And you end up with this:

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Now hold it flat, fold the raw edges in and sew up the gap like in the picture below. Try to hide your stitches as much as possible by only poking through a tiny bit of the exposed fabric. Make sure to sew the points of the wire really well so it doesn’t pop through ^_^

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

You hopefully end up with something like this…

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

Which will hold it’s shape like this!

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

And when you put it on you will look something like this XD

Bunny Scarf Tutorial

So there you have it! They are really quick and easy to make and very popular right now ^_^ Let me know if you give the usamimi tutorial a go!

Double Buns Hairstyle Tutorial

Today is all about the double hair buns or as some have called it “Minnie Mouse hair”! So many of you girls requested this tutorial so I hope you enjoy it ^_^

This style works best with medium-long hair but if you used more hairspray you could probably do a version with short hair.

We are aiming for this style:

Hair Buns Tutorial

What you need for double hair buns:

  • Brush
  • Bobby Pins
  • 2 Hair Ties
  • Any decorations you want, I’m using leopard print bows I made ^_^

Hair Buns Tutorial

First brush your hair so it’s nice and free of tangles. Divide it into two sections on either side of your head.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Take the first section and make a really high pony tail on the side of your head. I tend to turn my head upside down so I can get it extra high.

Hair Buns Tutorial

This is what we’re aiming for:

Hair Buns Tutorial

Now take a minute to relive your childhood fantasy of being one of the Spice Girls. Please don’t make me feel old by telling me you don’t know who they are >_<‘

Hair Buns Tutorial

Back to it! Take one of the piggy tails and tease the hell out of it.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Mwahaha you’re ready for a night on the town!

Hair Buns Tutorial

Ok seriously hair spray all over your piggy tail.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Hold on to the very end of it and twist it towards the front a few times.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Now let’s make a bun out of it! Following the twist you just made, curl the bun around the base of the pig tail. Don’t do it too tightly or else you’ll squish all the teasing you just did.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Get your bobby pins ready to pin the ends in place. Should look something like this:

Hair Buns Tutorial

Using the pins secure the ends into your head. Don’t make the mistake of just pining towards the middle, you need to make sure you are actually pinning to the hair which is not part of the bun to give it a good anchor.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Once it’s fairly secure you can squish the bun into the shape you want. If you find bits sticking up out of the middle, just carefully stick a pin in towards the middle.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Repeat on the other side and then add hairspray.

Hair Buns Tutorial

Time for decorations! I’m using two leopard print hair bands that I made, but you can use anything from flowers to tiaras!

Hair Buns Tutorial

Because the bows are on bands I just pull it over the top of the bun

Hair Buns Tutorial

And taadaaa! We’re all done ^_^

Hair Buns Tutorial

This style is really great for summer because it’s totally cute but it still gets the hair off of your neck!

Hope you enjoyed and let me know if any of you guys try your own double hair buns!Love Violet

Hime Gyaru Pigtail Hairstyle Tutorial

Hello! Finally what you’ve all been requesting, a cute hair tutorial on this style:

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Seeing as I couldn’t think of a name for it, this hairstyle shall now be known as the Hime-Style-Gigantic-Curly-Piggy-Tails ^_^

Things you need for this particular cute hair tutorial πŸ˜‰

  • Hair spray
  • Brush
  • Bobby pins
  • Curl enhancer spray/curling water etc
  • Hot rollers and clips
  • 2 hair ties
  • Whatever you need to do a hime style pouf

So how long does your hair need to be for this style? I think that as long as you can manage the hime pouf yours should be long enough, really even with shoulder length hair you could do it, it would just look more like two fluffy balls ^_^
My hair has gotten quite long over the last year so I’m happy! Haha by the time I can afford extensions I won’t need them anymore *_*

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

To start with, you should do a standard hime style pouf. If you need a tutorial on that take a look over here!I’ve been thinking of doing an updated tutorial on hime style hair which is more detailed but I have so many other posts waiting to be posted that it will have to wait a while.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

First step is to brush out the hair that is left down.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Separate your hair into two even sections on either side of your head. I just do it loosely so I can make sure everything is even.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

After you are satisfied with the sections put them in higher pony tails just above and behind your ears. It should sit just below where the pouf starts like this:

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Taadaa! Add a bow and this by itself is a cute hair style!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Plug in your hot rollers and allow them to heat up. Mine are Vidal Sasson and they’re super nice.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Starting from the back, take the section of hair which is the tail of your hime pouf and apply your curl spray. I am using one by Tresemme which I find works quite well.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Give it a quick brush through and roll it up with a small roller ^_^

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Clip it into place being very careful not to put the weight on the pouf as you might destroy the hard work you already did!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Now take the next section from the front and repeat the process.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

If you have a lot of different sized rollers like mine you should use the smaller ones at the front and bigger at the back.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

This is what you should end up with when you’ve used up all of the hair…

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Repeat on the other side!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Done!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Now hairspray the hell out of both sides.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Wait for the rollers to cool completely. It takes around 20 minutes, I used the opportunity to catch up with you all on Twitter πŸ˜‰

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

When they’re completely cool start undoing the rollers.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

You should start from the bottom and work upwards.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Again if you added a few bows this would be a cute style in itself ^_^

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Again spray the hell out of all the curls! No such thing as too much spray!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Ok now the fun part! Pick a curl randomly and use your brush to tease it. To get the correct effect you should hold a small section of the curl and use the brush to slide the rest of the curl upwards.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

This technique allows you to keep most of the length but the curls are really obvious and fluffy.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

See the difference between normal curls on the left and teased curls on the right?

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Repeat on both sides to all the curls and add more hairspray. Again you could just wear it like this with a few more bows XD This is like a tutorial with 5 different styles depending on how much time you’ve got hahaha!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

So that looks pretty cute but what we really want is to make the pig tails higher, hide the hair bands and give it even more volume. So have your bobby pins at the ready!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Grab your pony tail and pull it upwards.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Hold it to the side of your head straight up.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Using the bobby pins you should pin the hair roughly 3cm above the hair tie. You will need a couple of pins to hold it all. You should be pinning it just higher than the start of your pouf. Make sure to do it securely because this is what’s going to be holding up all your hair!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

When you drop down the hair again it should look like this:

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

The hair has much more volume and looks more fluid because it looks like it’s part of the pouf ^_^

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

This is what the back looks like, you can easily cover the pins with a big bow. Also you should probably do a better job of parting your hair in a straight line than I did ;P

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

And the side:

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Finished!

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Hopefully you all found this helpful, once you get the hang of it, it’s a really easy style to do.

Tutorial- Hime Pigtails

Let me know if you want another cute hair tutorial like this!

Pompom Hair Band Tutorial

Lately everywhere I look there are pompom hair bands so I thought why not do a pompom hair band tutorial!

Seriously it’s hard to turn around without seeing some kind of variation! I’ve been seeing them worn in hair and as bracelets or tied to bags. At first I couldn’t stand them but they’ve been slowly growing on me… and now I think they’re cute! The only thing is that here in Aus because they are more hard to come by they are very expensive, who wants to pay $20 for a hair tie?!

So I decided to make my own and it took around 10 minutes.

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

What you need:-Pom poms in various colours
-Stretchy jewelery thread
-Needle
-GlueDecide on the pattern you want and lay out your pom poms in a circle. I used 9 medium pom poms but you might need more or less depending on how big you want it and how squishy your pom poms are.

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

Get your stretchy jewelry thread and thread it onto your needle.

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

Pick up your first pom pom and thread it onto the elastic. Don’t go straight through the middle, go slightly to the side so you can fit as many pom poms onto it as possible.

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

Thread them all on!

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

Once you’ve got them all there, thread your needle through the first one pom pom again. Pull the thread tight to form a circle. Depending on how thick your stretchy thread is you might need to go through all of them again to make it extra sturdy.

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

Now tie the thread off in a double knot. Make sure to pull the knot extra tight but be careful it doesn’t pull the pom poms too close together or you won’t be able to stretch it over your hair! Finish by adding a tiny drop of glue to the knot for extra strength.

Taadaa! I am Wonder Woman deflecting bullets!

Pompom Hair Tie Tutorial

The lovely Super Kawaii Mama shows us you can use all kinds of sizes and colours:

And SKM’s doggie is an even cuter model:

And of course you could just wear it like a normal person…

Next post is going to be a Hime Gyaru FAQ so if you have any questions this is the last chance to get them in πŸ™‚

How To Store Headbands Cutely – Day 1

Why aren’t there more options for headband storage?

If you are anything like me you have a billion alice bands/head bands/what ever you call a bow on a rigid frame that goes on your head… and as adorable as they look they are really annoying to store!

DSC_0106_091123_3934 copy

They get tangled and if you just throw them in a drawer it’s hard to see which is which! So here is my solution, I’m going to make a gigantic roll shaped like a cute piece of candy to hold them all πŸ˜€

DSC_0108_091123_3933 copy This is what it’s going to look like at the end:

DSC_0184_091123_3859 copy

So first thing’s first, get all the materials. I’m doing a no-sewing version because my machine is packed up but if you replace the glue gun with sewing it will work just as well.

What you need to make my version of headband storage:

-Fabric -Foam for the inside (I am just going to recycle an old yoga mat but you can buy proper foam) -Ribbon or wool -Lace and flowers to decorate -Glue gun or sewing machine

DSC_0110_091123_3931 copy

Now if you’re doing a no-sew version like me you’ll need tape too. You can double your tape as a stylish accessory πŸ˜›

DSC_0111_091123_3930 copy

Ok let’s get started! Lay out your yoga mat (ignore these steps if you’re using foam for the middle) and start rolling.

DSC_0113_091123_3928 copy

You should make sure that the size you’ve rolled will actually fit the headbands so test one out to be safe ^_^

DSC_0114_091123_3927 copy

Once you get the right size it’s time to tape it in place.

DSC_0118_091123_3923 copy

Now you should measure and cut the fabric out. You need a large rectangle which is long enough to wrap around the mat and wide enough so that it hangs off the end like the wrapper of a piece of candy. Make sure to leave a few inches extra for hems etc.

DSC_0119_091123_3922 copy

You should be able to mock it up like this:

DSC_0123_091123_3918 copy

Now after you’ve cut out your fabric it’s time to decorate the ends on the candy piece. I like frilly things so I used some frilly cotton lace.

DSC_0124_091123_3917 copy

Use your hot glue gun to fix it in place. If you want you can hem the edges but because they are going to be covered with lace (and I don’t have my sewing machine out) it doesn’t really matter.

DSC_0127_091123_3914 copy

Taadaa lacy edged πŸ™‚

DSC_0131_091123_3910 copy

Ok now let’s make it up. Lay the mat on the fabric, make sure it’s straight and tape it in place.

DSC_0144_091123_3897 copy

Roll that baby up!

DSC_0147_091123_3894 copy

Fold the ends over and glue/sew it in place.

DSC_0152_091123_3889 copy

Now you should grab the end with your hand…

DSC_0154_091123_3887 copy

…and give it a good twist. Just like making a real candy ^_^

DSC_0155_091123_3886 copy

Grab the wool/ribbon and tie it in place.

DSC_0157_091123_3884 copy

This is what you should have now.

DSC_0162_091123_3879 copy

It kind of looks like candy but I think it needs a nice candy stripe πŸ˜€ So grab some eyelet lace and glue it to the wool/ribbon.

DSC_0166_091123_3875 copy

Roll it around in a nice spiral and glue it to the other end ^_^

DSC_0170_091123_3871 copy

I hid the ugly ends by gluing a cute flower over the top, of course that’s optional.

DSC_0178_091123_3865 copy

So this is it!

DSC_0179_091123_3864

Now you just need to add all your headbands and you’re done πŸ˜€

DSC_0184_091123_3859 copy

Tadaa! Candy head band holder πŸ˜€ What do you think? Nice and easy to store and they are all displayed nicely.

DSC_0187_091123_3856 copy

How do you guys store your headbands? Am I nuts for needing something this big? XD The sad part is that this one is full now and I think I need another one >_< Let me know your headband storage ideas!
