Christmas Holiday!

Currently I’m waiting on the couch while James cooks an epic dinner for us so I just wanted to put up a quick note saying I hope you’re all having a lovely day whether you celebrate Christmas or not.

I don’t celebrate it so we decided to go to the Zoo today and it was awesome! Best day I’ve had in ages 😀 I took a huge number of photos so there will be a post about that all soon but here’s a teaser shot ^_^

I hope you all had as much fun as me and I hope you all have a lovely night too!

Christmas at the Zoo

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe!

James and I have been obsessed with a TV show called Pushing Daisies. It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever. Well we finished the series (it was cancelled ater 2 seasons) and since seeing all of the delicious looking pies on the show (the main character owns a pie shop) I’ve had a bit of an obsession with making pies.  When we first started dating I used to make apple pies all the time but then we got busy with work and it just wasn’t a priority.
But now I am a pie making machine and I’ve been trying all kinds of different flavours. So I figured I would show you how I start with the basics. I can’t remember where this recipe came from, it’s been in my recipe file for years and I think it came from a book my Grandma gave my Mum from the 1960’s. Anyway, here’s how I make apple pies!

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

What you need, ingredients:

  • 4 apples
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup plain flour
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Puff Pastry (I’m using store bought because I’m lazy but I’m sure it would taste much better with home made!)

What you need, utilities:

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon for mixing
  • Measuring cups
  • 4x heart shaped silicon cake tins (obviously you can do it in something else XD)

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

First thing will be to wash and cut up your apples, remove all the skin and chop them into fairly small pieces. Set them to the side. Preheat your oven to around 190 Degrees Celsius.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

In a mixing bowl put a couple of squirts of lemon juice.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Add in the white sugar…

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

And the brown sugar…

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

And the flour ^_^

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Now add the Cinnamon, I use a lot (like maybe 2 teaspoons) because James loves it. I personally can’t stand cinnamon but there are so many other flavours in this that it’s tolerable ^_^

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Next add a couple of shakes of Nutmeg, maybe 1/2 as much as the Cinnamon you put in.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Mix it all together!

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Add in the apple pieces and mix it again. The apples should be coated in the sugary substance. It looks dry now but once the apples sit while you make the pastry cups it will go all liquidy and sticky from the apple’s juices.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Clean your pie moulds and if you’re making pastry from scratch do that now and roll it out.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

If you’re using the frozen pastry then make sure it’s thawed.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Drape it over the mould and press in to place. Pleat the sides so you can cover the base properly:

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

You should have something like this:

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Cut off the extra leaving around 1cm around the edges and pop in the filling!

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

I decided to be fancy and make lattice tops. This is achieved by weaving strips of pastry together. If you’re doing this then cut a bunch of 1cm strips of pastry and start by making an X with 2.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Build it slowly by adding 2 more in each direction, this way you can weave them all very easily without disturbing too much.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Continue until the whole thing is covered…

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

You should get something like this:

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Cut off the extra and pinch around the edges to seal it…

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Taaadaa!

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Repeat with the rest of them!

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Ok one more pie-cam-whoring photo because I spent so damn long making them XD

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Now put them into the oven! After 20 minutes check on them and make sure nothing is on fire then leave for another 20 minutes.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

When you’re already hungry this seems like hours though -_-‘

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Once you can see liquid boiling through the tops and the pastry is golden they are ready! Woo!

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Take them out and leave them to cool for a bit. I like to cool them on the bottom too so they don’t get soggy as I don’t have a cooling rack.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

And that’s it! Enjoy and eat! James likes to add icecream but I don’t really like icecream so I eat them plain.

Violet's Awesome Apple Pie Recipe

Super yummy 😀

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial and do let me know if you give it a try! Would you guys like me to post other flavour variations I make too? Like with the different fruits?

One Day In Paradise Lolita Store Anniversary Competition!

This post was sponsored by One Day in Paradise. For more information on sponsored posts please click here.

Finally a competition open to international readers too, I hope you all enjoy it ^_^

One Day in Paradise is to date Australia’s first and only local Lolita store and they celebrated their second anniversary this past weekend 😀

While I  personally no longer wear Lolita fashion I do still enjoy seeing it on others and I know that lots of my readers wear the fashion so when Marie (the owner) invited me along I was delighted to see what they were doing!

Early that morning Marie came over and I helped her out with her hair, she really enjoyed my tutorial on over the head plaits so she borrowed some of my flowers and I tried out the style on her. This proves that even those with short hair can try it because Marie’s hair is barely shoulder length!

One Day in Paradise Post

The store is located over at 248 Johnston Street and shares a shop with Visage and Vicewho sell mostly gothic clothing. Make sure you go type the suburb as Fitzroy into your GPS when you go otherwise you’ll end up walking like 10 extra blocks because there is a second 248 Johnston St in the next suburb over XD Yes ok I am speaking from experience on that one and no it’s not fun to walk the 10 blocks in the middle of an unseasonal storm especially when you’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time on your hair and make up for a party only to have it completely ruined by aforementioned rain!

One Day in Paradise

Once you see this in the window though you’ll be ok:

One Day in Paradise

Inside the first room might be a little bit of unfamiliar territory for the sweeter Lolitas 😉 Keep going up the back of the store though and you’ll spot a trail of arrows leading towards the frills!

One Day in Paradise

Follow the arrows…

One Day in Paradise

You might feel like Alice down the rabbit hole at this point but you’re almost there!

One Day in Paradise

The further you go, the pinker it gets XD

One Day In Paradise Party

And you made it safely!

One Day In Paradise Party

Now before we get to the party, here’s some info about One Day in Paradise:

  • They have an online store and a Facebook page
  • They sell both new and second hand brand and off brand items
  • They ship locally within Australia and internationally
  • The store is open to the public every Friday and Saturday (other times can be arranged by appointment only)
  • They stock JSKs, OPs, accessories, shoes, socks, magazines, wigs and pretty much anything else you could think of.
  • While they specialise in Lolita clothing they do also some times stock Hime Gyaru pieces too 😀

So on to the party!

One Day in Paradise

The place was descended on by about 30 Lolitas so all of this yummy food was gone in a flash! Hot tea on tap and everyone was very happy ^_^

One Day in Paradise

It was a lovely setting for everyone to chat and meet/catch up with each other.

One Day In Paradise Party

Of course with that many like minded girls in one place there was a whooole lot of shopping to be done XD

One Day In Paradise Party

I didn’t get a chance to do any shopping because I was busy being behind the camera interviewing all the girls for a video about the store which is at the bottom of the post ^_^

One Day in Paradise Post

Of course when I spotted a Jesus Diamante dress at the back of the rack I had to play with it at least XD Think I should go back and get it?

One Day in Paradise Post

Completely unrelated but I totally also wanted this awesome leopard print shower cap XD

One Day in Paradise

There were lots of girls meeting for the first time…

One Day In Paradise Party

And of course lots of old friends…

One Day In Paradise Party

There was even an artist sketching people ^_^

One Day In Paradise Party

At the end of the night Marie gave a little speach thanking everyone and outlining her plans for the new year.

One Day In Paradise Party

I got to catch up with Stephy, the owner of Visage and Vise^_^

One Day in Paradise Post

And of course Marie! I wanted to steal her dress so badly because it was just lovely!

You can see the rest of the photos in the slide show below…

DIY Felt Flower iPhone Case

It was requested a little while ago that I make a tutorial on how to make a felt case for an iphone or ipad touch. I made one of these for a Christmas present so it seemed like a good chance to show you what I did ^_^

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

These could be used for phone or little bags, hell make it bigger and you could use it as an evening handbag ^_^

To what you need:

  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Pearls

So get whatever you’re making a case for, in this case an iPhone, and use it as a measuring guide on your felt.

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Fold the bottom up to make a casing:

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Fold the top down so it hangs as far as you want the closure to go…

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Trim the edges so there is around 2cm overhang on each side to allow for the seams.

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Using a blanket stitch, go up the sides to secure the bottom flap :

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Now blanket stitch the first 1cm of the top flap. This is just to form a base that the pearls will attach to while keeping the shape of the bag when it’s held by the strap.

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Now let’s make a big flower for the front. Cut out a bunch of petals like this in varying sizes…

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Starting with the biggest petals, pleat them a couple of times in the middle and then stitch through to hold it in place.

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Repeat for all of them and you get something like this…

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Now let’s start putting it all together! Stitch the first row of petals into a circle. I used 3 large and 3 medium:

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Continue with another layer of less petals. You should place them so their points sit between the points of the layer beneath ^_^

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Keep adding layers until you run out of petals!

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Finish it by stitching a big pearl in the middle to hide the ugly parts. I only had blue felt at the time but it would be really pretty if you used a gradient of different colours for the petals.

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Ok so let’s put it all together!

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Stitch the flower on to the flap of the bag. I added a green leaf too.

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

You can hide the stitches with another piece of felt or a dedication to whoever you’re giving it to ^_^ When it’s opened up it looks like this:

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

Lastly stitch a string of pearls at the top to use as a strap. You can clip cute cell phone straps there or use it to clip into your handbag so you never have to search for your phone again ^_^

Tutorial- Felt iPhone Case

There you have it! These make really cute presents for people and you can customise them with different decorations on the flaps to match the person ^_^
