Winter is coming *insert Game of Thrones theme song….* on strong and when Winter hits I tend to get in the mood to knit and crochet 😀
I’ve resolved this month to make time for myself and doing things that *I* want to do eg. crafting. The first project I finished was this big smooshy scarf!
The knit is super loose and it looks great wrapped up or even rolled into a twist.
You will need white yarn, green yarn and big fat needles. These ones are 15mm.
The key to this scarf is using fat needles with thin yarn and knitting with two strands of yarn at a time. I’m using standard 8 ply yarn here.
I usually wind the whole ball so the yarn is doubled before I start that way it’s all finished and I don’t have to deal with a knotty mess half way through.
Cast on 35 stitches in green.
Knit in stockinette stitch.
Once you finish 10 rows switch colour to white.
Alternate bands of white and green every 10 rows until you feel like the scarf is long enough. This project is super quick to do up in an afternoon thanks to the chunky needles!
Cast off when you’re all finished!
Now fold the scarf in half (good side out) and use a yarn needle to stitch up the side. It will turn into a big tube! You can sew the ends shut or leave them open so you can tuck them together.
Done, done and done!
I love to wear it wrapped around twice and then tied in a knot. I have an obsession with big scarves!
Ready in a flash and it’s time to go out and enjoy the crisp winter air!
I love big buns (and I cannot lie… >_>) but sometimes it’s nice to be able to wear them without teasing/backcombing. Some people aren’t fans of backcombing because it doesn’t suit every hair type and it can be damaging. It’s good to take a break from damaging things!
Start with clean brushed hair. I find this works best on just washed hair for me because it’s quite frizzy so it’s easier to get volume. That said if you have a different kind of hair you may get better results with dirtier hair, it’s best to experiment until you find what works the best!
Don’t you hate when you promise yourself that you’ll avoid damaging hair styles but you want lots of volume? What on earth is a girl to do? XD
Tie your hair up in a ponytail.
The pony tail should be as high as you want the finished bun to be.
Hairspray through the loose hair. This will help give volume and give the style a lot more staying power.
Now mess up your hair!
Run your fingers through your hair and shake it up!
You’ll look super classy ;D
But this messiness is going to create the volume so the puffier the better.
Now to create the actual bun.
Usually when you make a bun you would twist the hair so it curls into a bun. Twisting will push down all of the volume we just made though so while you do need to twist a tiny bit to make the bun, try to keep it to a minimum and just wrap the hair around in a circle:
Pin it in place.
Once it is pinned securely you can pull the bun apart with your fingers so it becomes even more puffy.
Lastly another blast of hairspray!
And a pretty accessory…
And you’re all done!
Go enjoy your puffy bun and enjoy not having to spend ages brushing out teasing later 😀
This week I’ve set up a craft desk and I’m so excited to be able to start making things again! I now have a dressmaker’s mannequin to drape things on so I can start making a lot of sewing tutorials! So excited to start all of that!

I’ll be filming the next set of these fairly soon so if you have any requests now is the time for them 😀
Today though, I wanted to share one of my favorite elegant styles. This is great for classic outfits and times when a little more elegance is appropriate!
Imagine this:
You’re on holiday somewhere in Europe and you bump into a handsome prince. Love at first sight! He is madly in love with you and invites you to the embassy ball… the only problem is you only have 30 minutes to get ready! D: You already own several ball gowns (who doesn’t, am I right?) but OH NOES what will you do with your hair?!?! Every girl’s worst nightmare… 😉
We did many variations of this when I was at school and someone even invented a little plastic tool which was completely unnecessary XD
Start with your hair in a high ponytail.
Pull the ponytail straight upwards and push the band up a little bit.
Split the ponytail in half under the band. It’s easiest to just poke your finger through and then wiggle it to form a hole.
Flip the ends of the hair forward and poke both of your thumbs into the hole.
Use your thumbs to pull the ends of the ponytail through the hole.
Now it should look something like this, you’ve created a a twist on either side of the band.
But it sits pretty strangely at the front!
And at the back it’s quite loose.
Split the ends of the ponytail and pull them apart so it pushes the hairband upwards. You can pull or push until everything tightens up and sits flat.
Cute but I prefer this style with curled ends so it looks very polished.
I curl the ends of the ponytail using a straightener but you can use anything you prefer.
Done!
And you can see that the shape is a lot more streamlined at the front after adjusting the band.
You can add a bow or accessory to cover the band if you like. I think this one looks a bit like I should be going horse riding!
All finished!
This is an easy style to do in the mornings before school or work as it can be done in only a few minutes once you get the hang of it. You can also just roll the loose hair up into a bun to make it even quicker!
Hope you enjoyed the tutorial and let me know if you give it a try!
I have moved all of the downloads into their own section to help with the load times of the site (the files were getting pretty huge!) and now there is a master list that you can refer to each of them in. I’ll give a proper announcement soon with everything else that’s going to go in The VLB, it’s going to be pretty awesome, I’m really excited about it!

I’m back from Queensland and getting back into the swing of everything! This week I’ve got some big announcements as well as some competitions coming up but let’s kick things off with a hair tutorial 😀
Looped plaits are a really versatile style because they go with a lot of different fashion looks. I really love these with classic Lolita styled outfits but they can be dressed up or down and worn with just about anything.
And the video:
Seeing as this is a fairly easy style I thought I would show you the basics of how to plait as well. Start with brushed hair.
Divide it in half, we’ll be plaiting each side.
Have two hair ties ready, I usually just keep them on my wrist so I don’t have to search around for them later.
Divide the first half into three sections. I’ve labeled them and colour coded so you you can see how they move in the photos.
Take section #1 on the left and move it over #2 so it’s now in the center.
Now take section #3 and move it over the top of #1 so it now becomes the middle piece. Basically you do this over and over again, taking the left section then moving it to the center, then the right to the center, then the left, the right, the left etc until you run out of hair.
So the next step would be to take #2 and move it to the center over the top of #3.
You’ll start to see this pattern forming:
I suggest if you’re just learning to plait to try doing it on someone else first or use pieces of ribbon until you understand the basic hand motions. It’s much easier to understand it when you can see what you’re doing!
And just continue that until you reach the end then tie off.
Now the looping part of this style! Take the end of the plait and make a loop by holding it just behind your ear.
Like this:
Pin it in place, you may need a few pins crossing over to hold it in place. The easiest way to secure it is to push a few of the pins through the hair tie so they don’t slip out later.
Don’t forget the other side!
Once you have repeated on the other side give it a blast of hairspray.
To make them a bit bigger you can gently pull the sides of the plait to separate them.
Easy!
Now you just need to add some cute accessories and you’re all finished. This style looks great with an alice band or some clips on the side.
I’m getting ready to go to Queensland this week so have an early hair tutorial 😉
Queensland is putting me in a beachy mood so what better than a one sided hairstyle? It reminds me a bit of a mermaid ^_^
So start with brushed hair. This looks especially great with waved hair or curls.
Decide which side you want the hair brushed over to and grab the other side.
Brush it over to the other side. Surprise XD
This looks best with a really deep part line.
Like this:
At the back, grab the hair at the bottom.
Twist it upwards like this:
Pin it in place. Make sure you place one of the bobby pins right in the twist and one in an X shape with it. This is the strongest way to hold pins together. I think I need to do a bobby pin basics tutorial because a lot of people tend to have problems with them.
It should look roughly like this. Now your hair will stay over one side all day without you constantly having to flick it every time the stupid wind at the beach decides to blow the other way.
You can also use this as a base to add decorations and flowers.
From the front it’s pretty plain though…
So grab a small section of hair in front of your ear and fold it backwards. Don’t pull it tight, this is a relaxed style.
Pin it in place and add a decoration like a hibiscus flower or something else nice and beachy. Fluff out the rest of your hair so it’s very full.
Easy and perfect for the beach!
Like!
Now I just have to actually go to a beach…
Ok! I’ve got to get back to packing, see you all in Queensland!
You guys will probably remember that as part of the Home Sweet Home Project I made a new kitchen backsplash out of contact and wrapping paper. I couldn’t find a pattern that I wanted so I ordered some purpose made kitchen sticker covering.
The new version and the old!
I bought the sticker from ebay. They no longer ship here unfortunately but you can easily find similar products by searching for “kitchen stickers”. It arrived around 2 weeks later and came from Korea. It cost around $35 for a 2 meter length. I had quite a bit left over and I’m going to be using it in the laundry.
I also bought some stickers for the fridge but I haven’t taken proper photos yet.
It comes in a roll and passes the puppy sniff test.
It was quite easy to stick together. After cutting to the right size I just peeled the back off and lined it up.
Lining it up was a bit of a problem because the designs themselves didn’t actually line up as they weren’t printed completely straight>_<
Worth the effort though because I love this patten and I think it goes with my Spring theme much more than the older version.
While it was more expensive it’s probably a bit more durable and I definitely love the pattern!
