Make Your Own Lace iPhone Case

So a while ago I did a tutorial on how to make removable iphone covers so you could easily switch up designs on a daily basis… then I never got around to making any other designs! Well today I finally made another one. This one is much more simple and classic looking than my usual tastes so it’s perfect for times when it’s not appropriate to have crazy styles… like corporate business meetings.

Still very girly but not too over the top!

lace-iphone-case-diy-719

You need:

  • The kind of iphone case these fit in
  • A base made of cardboard or plastic to make the template from
  • Silver paper
  • PVA glue
  • Lace
  • Hot glue

lace-iphone-case-diy-704

Cover your base with PVA glue. I went a little overboard so mine took a while to dry.

lace-iphone-case-diy-706

Stick on the silver paper, wait for it to dry and then trim around the edges and the camera hole.

lace-iphone-case-diy-707

Lay out the lace in the design you want. I used 3 pieces of back lace diagonally then one piece of white over it. Hot glue the black lace in place.

lace-iphone-case-diy-710

Then hot glue the white lace over it. You can ignore the camera hole until it’s all dry.

lace-iphone-case-diy-711

Trim around the edges making sure to get as close as possible then use small scissors or a scalpel to poke out the camera hole.

lace-iphone-case-diy-712

Slip it in the case and you’re all done!

lace-iphone-case-diy-714

Very stylish 😀

It makes me want to make some more of them in lots of different styles again… so it will probably be months before that actually happens haha!

How To Make A Decorative Wire Bird Cage

Today’s craft is a wire bird cage. I haven’t been able to log in to Pinterest the last few weeks without seeing someone’s version of this. It seems to have seeped into my brain because now I can’t think about anything other than making different types of bird cages and finding different uses for them!

Now that I’ve made one I want to experiment with painting them different colours, doing different sizes and using different gauges of wire for different more ornate designs.

Most of the ones I’ve seen require soldering of some sort which I wasn’t prepared to do so I made mine using 2 gauges of wire, a large for the main parts and a thin jewellery wire for the joins.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-688

You can pretty much see how it’s made without needing a tutorial but I’m already here… and I’ve already got all these photos… so let’s just do it anyway ;)You need:

  • Thick-ish wire for the main structure
  • Thin-ish wire for the joins
  • Wire cutters
  • Pliers for bending everything (my sore fingers really advise you to use pliers)
  • Something to get a perfect circle shape from, I used a bottle of Bio Oil
jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-676
Start by making a circle of thick wire and use a some small wire to wrap the ends securely. If you’re worried about how sharp they are you can wrap further around to cover edges or even completely around the circle for an interesting finish.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-678

Make two of these.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-679

Now make 3 curved pieces which have long legs, these will be the tall parts of the cage. They don’t need to be perfect because you’re going to be bending them a lot to perfect the shape. Make sure to cut the legs quite long so you have room to bend and loop the ends. More is better than less!

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-680

Put them together like this and tie the tops of all of them together with the thin wire to keep them steady while you work. You can make this more decorative later.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-681

Slide the first loop where you want the half way point of the cage to be.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-682

And then slide the bottom on too.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-683

Don’t worry if it won’t stay up for now, we’ll fix it a bit later.

Bend the legs out so they sit evenly.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-684

Once I was sure it was even I added a decorative loop at the top to make it a bit more secure and to prevent everything from sliding around.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-685

Now bend the ends of the legs into loops so they hook around the bottom circle. Once you’re done you can slide the half way circle back up and bend the inside wires so they are bowed out. Their curve will hold the circle in place. If you find this isn’t secure enough you can add some more small gauge wire loops to hold it in place.

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-687

All finished! You could make mini ones for jewellery or larger ones as decorative house hold things. This one is an odd size so it’s a little bit pointless XD

jewellery-bird-cage-tutorial-690

I’m thinking of making some big ones to hang off our roof next. Maybe a cluster of them painted pink or white would look really pretty with candles inside!

Make A Simple Hanging Ball Decoration

Ridiculously simple decorations for holidays with absolute minimum effort? CHECK.

I wish we had more space in the apartment, it looks cluttered enough as it is without more decorations but I couldn’t help trying to do something anyway, so I made a couple of hanging puff balls. Of course I then realised I had no where to hang them and scrapped the project XD Forward thinking is not my strong point!

You need:

  • Tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Yarn or string

VioletLeBeaux-Hanging-Decoration_6102_9308

Place a heap of sheets of tissue paper on top of each other and cut into a square. Fold down the middle like an accordion so it forms a bow.VioletLeBeaux-Hanging-Decoration_6103_9309

Tie a long piece of yarn around the middle.

VioletLeBeaux-Hanging-Decoration_6104_9310

Fluff it all out into a ball and if you want to make it a bit more interesting tear the edges of the paper. You can also do this with recycled wrapping paper from gifts to make it colourful and more interesting 😀

VioletLeBeaux-Hanging-Decoration_6105_9311

Hang it up and put some wanky vintage filter on you’re camera and you’re pretty much set 😀 I actually think it would look much cooler if you had about 50 of them hanging in rows from the ceiling but we don’t have anything to hang them off so I’m off to think of something more suitable 😉

How To Make A Removable Fabric Bed Head Board – Home Sweet Home

This is the story of how I made our new headboard out of $7 of plastic sheeting and some pillows.

Now it looks like this 😀 😀 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-598_18710

And before it looked like this…

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-103_18244

No Home Sweet Home page, I’m really behind on those >_<So my old bed was ok but it really didn’t match the rest of the changes I’d made to the bedroom. Meeeeh.VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-105_18246

You need:

  • Plastic board, I used 4 sheets
  • Pillow cases/fabric
  • Stuffing/old pillow
  • Buttons
  • Glue gun
We rent so obviously I couldn’t screw anything to the walls nor could I afford a new bed frame so instead I made one that just slotted in.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-309_18421

This is the kind of plastic board I used, it was from Bunnings.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-313_18425

I taped it all together into one big piece.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-314_18426

And cut it down so it was the right width and height to slot in behind the bed.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-316_18428

Then James and I sat down on the bed and traced around ourselves to work out how big I needed to make the curve so we could still lean on it comfortably.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-321_18433

We filled them in to be terrible drawings of ourselves… because we’re awesome.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-325_18437

Then we added in some love messages because we’re smoopy like that. And now when I lean against the headboard I always think about how much I love him!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-326_18438

So classy!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-323_18435

Aaaaaaanyway….

I drew on the design of the headboard making sure to leave room for James’ abs.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-329_18441

And the other side too.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-330_18442

Then I cut it out.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-332_18444

To save time later I drew the placement of where the buttons would eventually go. To make sure they were even I made a grid with a fancy thing called a ruler 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-334_18446VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-333_18445

Then I poked holes through with a pair of scissors.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-336_18448

Now for the design! We managed to get a doona (duvet) cover for $40 on sale at Target and it came with pillow cases. I wanted different pillow cases so I decided to use them on the headboard instead. Luckily the pattern matched up.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-338_18450

I opened them out so there was enough fabric to cover the whole thing. It didn’t reach the bottom but that really didn’t matter because it would be covered up by the actual bed.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-340_18452

Now it was time for the fun part: pillow stuffing.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-344_18456

I emptied an old pillow all over the plastic.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-346_18458

And hot glued it in place. I didn’t have too much stuffing so when I have money for more I’ll be buying some and opening it up and restuffing.

Kinda looks like a big cloud 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-347_18459

Once it was fluffy I laid out the fabric and hot glued it along the bottom to the plastic.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-354_18466

I then made sure there were no wrinkles and slowly went around the edge hot gluing it around the back side. It was very important to pull it tight. It was also important not to burn myself. I only managed to do one of those things though.

While gluing the edges I made sure to put stuffing over them too so the fabric didn’t show the sharp edges of the plastic.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-359_18471

Taadaaa…

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-360_18472

It started looking more like something useful at this point! And James said he doubted I could make it work!!!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-365_18477

And the back. I reinforced it with some off cuts to make sure it didn’t bend.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-366_18478

Close ups of glue…

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-371_18483

And this is it slotted in the bed:

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-472_18584

The last step is to add in the buttons. At first I tried to make my own buttons by covering more plastic but that was extremely tedious so instead I got off my butt and bought some nicer ones 😀

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-592_18704

To hold them in place at the back I used some cardboard off cuts cut like this. I threaded each button, stitched it through the hole leaving the ends both out the back of the hole then tied them around the piece of cardboard so they were kept in place. Hard to explain but it works. It’s very important to keep the buttons as tight as possible so they make nice dents in the fabric.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-594_18706

Like this:

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-595_18707

The buttons pucker the fabric through the padding.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-597_18709

And that’s it!

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-602_18714

I am extremely happy with how this turned out. While it’s not the most professional thing in the world it brightens the room up beautifully, matches all my new decorating and it was extremely cheap.

VioletLeBeaux-DIY-Headboard-Tutorial-598_18710

What do you guys think? I think the Home Sweet Home project is starting to come along nicely~

Needle Felting! Dog, Fox and Cute Brooch Tutorial

I’ve been needle felting again 😀

Here’s the little scottie dog I made and below it I’ll show you how I made a little bunny charm.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-529_18641VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-532_18644

Heehee with the fox so cute!VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-536_18648So here’s the finished charm, I originally got the idea for a charm like this from a video on youtube which (even though I spent a long time looking today) I can longer find, the girl made a really pretty necklace out of needle felted balls and flowers. If you’ve happened to see the video please send me the link so I can add it here! *Edit* Reece let me know the video is here! YAY! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgqWY0aYVFAphoto[2]

I really love felting when it’s incorporated into jewellery with other mediums.

Start with a ball of green, I mixed a couple of greens for the one I wanted.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-141_18282

I made it small enough to fit snugly into the little plastic base.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-142_18283

And hot glued it firmly.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-143_18284

Then it was just a matter of  adding a design. I chose a bunny because… well they’re damn cute!

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-146_18287

It took me a while to understand how to shape it well but now I want to try more felting embroidery like this.

VioletLeBeaux-Needle-Felting-147_18288

Some little flowers around the bunny and that’s it! Now it just needs a brooch backing or something similar.

photo[2]photo[1]photo

Of course the downside of this craft is that everything even remotely close to it looks furry like this.

-Needle-Felting-288

So if you don’t separate the roving properly you’ll be breathing in fibre all night >_< Totally worth the time to be gentle for the best results because it’s such a cute craft!

Crochet Tutorial for Beginners: Pink Bunny Rabbit Instructions
This is a little tutorial on the basics of crochet.
There is an accompanying blog post with photo instructions over at www.VioletLeBeaux.com
I learned from friends, books and videos so my techniques may not be 100% accurate but they’ve worked for me so far!
Enjoy and good luck with your bunny!
Finished bunny!
You need a crochet hook and yarn.
Take the end of the yarn, tie a knot but don’t pull the end through.
Use your hook to pick up the yarn in the middle.
Pull the two ends of yarn downwards.
Pull the ends apart to tighten the knot around the hook.
Wrap the yarn around the hook, front to back. It’s kind of clockwise.
Twist the hook to face down and slide the loop off the top.
The hook will catch the yarn you just wrapped around it.
Repeat to make 20 stitches.
Wrap and hook through, wrap and hook through etc.
Stop once you have done 20 chains.
This is a foundation chain!
Done! Top and bottom.
Now chain two more stitches.
Hold the end of the chain in an “L” with the extra two chains at the bottom.
Let’s make the first row.
Skipping the 2 extra chains, push the hook through the 3rd one.
Wrap the yarn around the hook.
Pull the hook down and through the loop.
The hook will catch the yarn you wrapped and pull it through to make a new stitch.
Wrap the yarn around again.
Pull the hook down and through again.
This time go through the two loops on the hook.
It forms a new stitch again.
And that completes the whole stich and takes us back to the first step again.
So the start again… push the hook through the next loop.
Wrap the yarn.
Pull it through the first loop, wrap the yarn again, pull it through the other loops.
Back at step 1!
