Faux Bob Hair Tutorial ^_^

Jul 12, 2011 by

There have been quite a few requests for hair tutorials lately so I thought I would give doing a video one by myself a try :D

Recently I’ve been really missing my short hair, I’ve had it long for a few years now and I usually get to a point that I’m so sick of it I chop it all short again. This time I don’t want to get rid of it because I love the length and the pink parts so I’m experimenting with various ways to fake it.

This style is good for Summer because it keeps hair away from your neck and shoulders. Or you know, just good for people like me who get bored with their hair easily!

Do take a look because it’s got the new theme song (and girl with the lashes at the end!) and it’s a completely new editing style for me. I’m still improving in making videos (especially my lighting set up, James worked out how to make it so much better since I recorded this one) so any suggestions are appreciated!  Also do let me know if you prefer to have tutorials like this in photo or video form. Ideally I would like to do both photo and video version fo everything but it can be quite time consuming so I might just do one at a time for now and redo them in the other form later. I made Youtube partner last week and now I’m getting the hang of doing more editing etc so I’m all excited about doing videos hahaha!

Anyway enjoy!

Hope you enjoyed it and it was a bit useful!

So cute!!! You look really good with short hair :-D

I really wanna see what I’d look like with bangs – you can get ‘attachments’ for that can’t you?

  2. Hi there!
    Thanks for the tutorial!
It’s great- I was searching so long for a good tuto. <3
I will try it this weekend! ^.^

  3. I love it!!
    Thanks for the tutorial~
Will try this out one day~ haha

  4. Too cute! I really want to give this a go. I’m interested to see if this method will work with my mop (I do have an awful lot of hair). If it works, I might wear it this way to work tomorrow.

This was great Violet!! Such a great 1920′s silent film vibe, and you look adorable with a bob. I’m going to have to convince my sister to try this out on me, I’m useless when it comes to hair!

    • :D Thanks Pixie! Let me know how you and your sister go with it, you’d be surprised how easy it is with a little practice!

  6. AHHH TOO CUTE!!!

  7. I am officially blown away. How creative and beautiful. I was amazed as I watched your hair go from long to short. It looks very classy on you. Recently I received a long wig. I gave it medium frame the face bangs. This would look really cute on the wig. If I find time to try it out I’ll film it. Thanks for sharing this talent of yours with us.

    • Thanks so much Leslie *hugs* I bet this would go really well with a wig because you could actually pin it into the weave. Let me know how it goes!

  8. Very nice! A definite bonus since you don’t have to cut your hair to get your hair into a bobcut. xD Also I like the new opening theme.

  9. Violet, I love this! I have been really wanting to chop my hair off and this is a great alternative. Because, to be honest, I love having long hair.

    • I am in exactly the same boat, I’ve been wanting a cut but I really don’t want to give up my long hair :D So glad you liked it!

Great video! Congrats on making YT Partner!

  11. sweeet! great tutorial style!

  12. AHHH you look so cute with short hairr. The side curls are so darlingg

  13. Oh I love this! These methods look like they work a lot better than the ones I usually use for a faux bob. I’ve been thinking of chopping my hair off for the past few weeks (we’re smack in the middle of summer here), so maybe tomorrow I’ll try one of these out and test the waters a bit! Also, I don’t know if it’s the makeup or lighting or what, but you look amazing in this video! You’re always gorg, but something here just worked really really well for you ♥

    • You should totally give it a try, I think you would be so cute with a little bob! And thank you so much! I think it’s probably the lighting, finally nice lighting for my videos makes me a very happy camper :D

Great new video method!!! I want to learn how to edit videos – what do you use to do it?

Also — I wonder if this style would work without fringe? Maybe I’ll try just to see if that will work or not :D

    • Thanks so much! I think it probably would work without a fringe, it just might be harder to blend the front bit in? Give it a try and see :D

  15. This tutorial is absolutely fabulous! You are such a Bette. I was thinking another easy way to help roll up the hair and pin it in place is with empty toilet paper rolls, the cardboard insert parts. Cut them and then cut a slit in them long way and slide the bottom of the hair in, then roll it up and pin, the pins stay more securely, seriously, or you can use rollers, but the cardboard from the empty toilet paper rolls has more shape-ability. I used this method recently to make fake bangs!! No one knew I had the roll in my hair, I went out and about too!! Hey, it’s recycling!! LOL

    • Oooh that sounds like a great idea Piper! I am totally going to give it a go, thanks so much for the tip :D

  16. I really loved the style of the video, and the speed up of how you got through the process was great. The last sound you had though was odd and blasted through my speakers at the end. It was much higher in volume. Might just be me, but I thought you should know.

    Thanks for the great tutorial!

    • Thanks so much for the heads up Christina! I’ve been having a look into it, I think because the last sound was a different format it might have imported weirdly, fingers crossed it’s fixed on the next videos! Anyway thanks again and I’m really glad you enjoyed the new style :D

  17. Lovely tutorial! :D I wil definitely try this out, thanks :)

  18. It’s absolutely lovely! best faux bob ever^^ and your flat iron is so tiny n cute! can it replace a large one? I’m looking around for one^^ good for travelling^^ oh! love this method too! vid AND write up in the vid^^

    • Yes! I totally love my mini flat iron, I don’t even own a bit one now because I love this one so much! It’s a little Vidal Sassoon one, very nice and only $20 :D

  19. Leanne

I thought the tutorial was adorable !
I love your wallpaper/background by the way, hehe.
It looks very fun and I oughta give it a try.
And where did you get the mini straightener ? It’s so cute and looks really handy !

    • :D Thanks so much! The mini straightener is a Vidal Sassoon one from Big W and it was around $20, best hair purchase ever. I’m really glad you liked the video!

  20. You are just too cute! I will definitely be trying this hairstyle soon! I’m planning on cutting my long hair off for an angled bob soon. Is your hair naturally that soft and wonderful looking or do you have some sort of secret? I love your site! ^__^

    • Oh wow that’s a big change! Haha no big secret, I think it probably just looks extra shiny because of the lighting XD I love Palmers coconut oil conditioner!

  21. Uuww :( I can’t watch it :((
I think you should present your tutorials in pictures…videos are quite a difficult thing for me here in germany ;)

    liebeliebe Kathi

    • Thanks for your comment Kathi :) Most of the video tutorials have previously been done in photos, this is one of the exceptions. Why aren’t you able to view in Germany? I thought it was only copyright restricted music that was banned there? Let me know and I will see if I can find a solution to help :)

Love your hair tutorial, its so cute ^_^

  23. Tsuki

Your hair looks so soft :o
