Purple Hair Streaks with Illamasqua Cream Pigment
Jun 21, 2011 by Violet
You know me, I love colorful hair. I love unnatural hair and I love being able to change my hair on a whim, that’s why I love hair pieces and wigs etc. That’s why when I was a kid in the 90′s/early 2000′s (is that even a word? I refuse to call them the naught-ies) I fell victim to hair mascara and 3 wash colours. In primary school I developed an obsession with blue/red/purple streaks and if it hadn’t been for the uniform rules at school I would have gotten them! The first time I dyed my hair I did it bright red and from there I never looked back. My favorite at the time was bright red with around 3 inches of blonde at the bottoms, I loved it so much!
So fast forward to around a month ago when we met the Illamasqua creator Jullian Kynaston and he told me something interesting… Part of Illamasqua’s idea is that Make up should be for everyone and why should it stop at the edge of your face. In fact he told me that the Illamasqua cream pigments could be used on hair too. I actually squeed… it was a bit embarrassing.
I’ve had visions of purple streaks to compliment my pink for a while and I had a pot of Daub in my draw that they sent waiting for review so I was pretty damn excited to try the idea out!!
This is my result…

| It looks a bit patchy but I’m putting that down to being overambitious and trying to do too large a section first try. Pretty damn cool if I say so myself. But here’s the important question… Does it feel as crinkly and terrible as hair mascara did in the 90′s? No. Not even a little bit. This doesn’t dry hard at all because, well, it’s made to be used on the face. Big plus right there, mine lasted around 3 days gradually fading at which point I decided to remove it and try a different style, it had worn a bit but still looked pretty good.
This is how I achieved the look:

Section the parts of hair I wanted purple, put a piece of toilet paper underneath…

Painted the hair with a make up brush…

Got frustrated with how long that was taking and used fingers instead…

Allowed to dry for a few minutes….

Brushed out to separate the hairs….

To give it even more of a natural look I added a little dry shampoo to the mix and brushed that out too.

Perfect. Feels the same texture as the rest of my hair, doesn’t leave purple everywhere and washes out with water or a little oil free make up remover.
This is perfect for those who want to experiment with colour but not commit or who change their likes often. There is not one thing that I don’t like about this colour in my hair, it’s the perfect shade to compliment the pink! Now I want to get a bunch of them and try different ideas! Like painting hearts on my fringe or something else fun like that!

So yes this first day it looked a bit patchy because I was impatient but the next day it had worked in better and looked completely even and natural. Kicking myself for not thinking to take photos of that >_<
Next time I will work with smaller sections to get a completely even coverage first go rather than waiting for it to settle in on the second day. Still very happy with the experiment especially because I can get rid of it so quickly when I’m bored! :D

99% of the time I LOVE my dark brown hair. But like you I also love unnaturally brightly coloured hair and that just doesn’t work on my dark hair unless I bleach streasks for this purpose! That was one good thing about hair mascara – though it was crispy it did work on dark hair!
I’m going to test this out on dark hair next week, I think it’s pigmented enough it might work!
What a good idea! I would definitely try this if I were a blondie! Did it come off onto your pillow, though?
Here is another cheapo tip you may be interested in – my sister uses food colouring to dye coloured streaks into her hair. I think it lasts a couple of washes, gradually fading out. Just think, you could match your hair to the icing on your cupcakes!
It didn’t come off anywhere that I could see, once it set in the hair it was pretty much there to day. Ooo food colouring? I might have to give that a go but I think I would be scared to get it everywhere with how clumsy I am hahaha!
Oh wow I wasn’t aware you could use it on hair, oooooh I’m all full of ideas now…You could stencil stuff on your hair and all sorts :D
Seriously you need to try it!
I love this idea! I’ve seen designs dyed into hair and things seems like the perfect way to add them – I immediately thought of hearts on bangs too! Stars, moons, or maybe even words would be interesting! Your lilac looks great as well :) If you don’t mind my asking, do you use any particular products to keep bleached hair healthy? I’m on the hunt for new ones!
I totally thought of you when I was doing this actually! At the moment I’m using a henna hair mask once a month and coconut oil conditioner to give it some moisture back. I found that the bleach doesn’t damage as much as the pink does :( I’m always on the hunt for new hair things though so let me know if you find any!
What?!! I had no idea you could use their pigments on your hair! I have dark Asian hair however so I’m not sure if this would work as well for me…Ah well, I’ll give it a try.
I’m going to give it a try on dark hair this weekend and see how it goes!
This is very cool! The color and the placement looks fantastic with your hair!
I was a huuuuge hair mascara addict in the 90s/early 2000s XD
ME TOO! Blue and red streaks for the win!
I love this! I can’t wait to try this out myself.
I had a huge obsession with hair colours in high school. I too regularly used hair mascara to put red and purple streaks into my hair (mmm, crunchy). For a while I had a hot pink streak and then a blue streak and at one point I dip-dyed the ends of my hair bright blue.
I totally knew you would love this! Crunchy streaks bringing back so many memories!
Not bad! :D I definitely am going to say it’s lovely because of the purple <3
Haha thank you :)
Love this – what a great way to experiment with colors! The purple looks great on you – maybe it’s the new pink? ;-)
Very tempting!
You are such a smart cookie!!
Haha Mr Kynaston gets the credit on this one!
i have dark color since i have asian ppl
purple not look good on me
btw, i think dat u should be a hair designer/ hair style violet
all ur creation are superb like pro
Aww you are very sweet Princess, I don’t think I’m anywhere near good enough to be a pro!
Do you think that this method would also work on people with darker hair? Like brown or even black?
I just tried it on a friend with dark hair and it worked on hers, I’ll post a video soon ^_^
Ooh, yay! I can’t wait to see it!
