Purple Hair Streaks with Illamasqua Cream Pigment

Jun 21, 2011 by

You know me, I love colorful hair. I love unnatural hair and I love being able to change my hair on a whim, that’s why I love hair pieces and wigs etc. That’s why when I was a kid in the 90′s/early 2000′s (is that even a word? I refuse to call them the naught-ies) I fell victim to hair mascara and 3 wash colours. In primary school I developed an obsession with blue/red/purple streaks and if it hadn’t been for the uniform rules at school I would have gotten them! The first time I dyed my hair I did it bright red and from there I never looked back. My favorite at the time was bright red with around 3 inches of blonde at the bottoms, I loved it so much!

So fast forward to around a month ago when we met the Illamasqua creator Jullian Kynaston and he told me something interesting… Part of Illamasqua’s idea is that Make up should be for everyone and why should it stop at the edge of your face. In fact he told me that the Illamasqua cream pigments could be used on hair too. I actually squeed… it was a bit embarrassing.

I’ve had visions of purple streaks to compliment my pink for a while and I had a pot of Daub in my draw that they sent waiting for review so I was pretty damn excited to try the idea out!!

This is my result…

How to use Illamasqua pigment for colourful hair streaks

  1. 99% of the time I LOVE my dark brown hair. But like you I also love unnaturally brightly coloured hair and that just doesn’t work on my dark hair unless I bleach streasks for this purpose! That was one good thing about hair mascara – though it was crispy it did work on dark hair!

    • I’m going to test this out on dark hair next week, I think it’s pigmented enough it might work!

  2. What a good idea! I would definitely try this if I were a blondie! Did it come off onto your pillow, though?

Here is another cheapo tip you may be interested in – my sister uses food colouring to dye coloured streaks into her hair. I think it lasts a couple of washes, gradually fading out. Just think, you could match your hair to the icing on your cupcakes!

    • It didn’t come off anywhere that I could see, once it set in the hair it was pretty much there to day. Ooo food colouring? I might have to give that a go but I think I would be scared to get it everywhere with how clumsy I am hahaha!

  3. Oh wow I wasn’t aware you could use it on hair, oooooh I’m all full of ideas now…You could stencil stuff on your hair and all sorts :D

  4. I love this idea! I’ve seen designs dyed into hair and things seems like the perfect way to add them – I immediately thought of hearts on bangs too! Stars, moons, or maybe even words would be interesting! Your lilac looks great as well :) If you don’t mind my asking, do you use any particular products to keep bleached hair healthy? I’m on the hunt for new ones!

    • I totally thought of you when I was doing this actually! At the moment I’m using a henna hair mask once a month and coconut oil conditioner to give it some moisture back. I found that the bleach doesn’t damage as much as the pink does :( I’m always on the hunt for new hair things though so let me know if you find any!

  5. What?!! I had no idea you could use their pigments on your hair! I have dark Asian hair however so I’m not sure if this would work as well for me…Ah well, I’ll give it a try.

  6. This is very cool! The color and the placement looks fantastic with your hair!

I was a huuuuge hair mascara addict in the 90s/early 2000s XD

  7. I love this! I can’t wait to try this out myself.
I had a huge obsession with hair colours in high school. I too regularly used hair mascara to put red and purple streaks into my hair (mmm, crunchy). For a while I had a hot pink streak and then a blue streak and at one point I dip-dyed the ends of my hair bright blue.

  8. Not bad! :D I definitely am going to say it’s lovely because of the purple <3

  9. Eileen

Love this – what a great way to experiment with colors! The purple looks great on you – maybe it’s the new pink? ;-)

    • Aww you are very sweet Princess, I don’t think I’m anywhere near good enough to be a pro!

  12. Do you think that this method would also work on people with darker hair? Like brown or even black?

    • I just tried it on a friend with dark hair and it worked on hers, I’ll post a video soon ^_^

  13. Ooh, yay! I can’t wait to see it!
