I’m using silver ribbon and black thread so you can easily see where I’m stitching. These flowers work best with ribbon where both sides are nice but if use ribbon with different textures on each side it can be quite an interesting effect. First thing, fold down one end at a 45 degree angle and stitch it in place. You should leave a couple of cm at the bottom to form a stem.

Now starting from the outside, roll it in towards the rest of the ribbon…

And stitch it in place:

Now fold the ribbon backwards on a 45degree angle…

Roll that around the stem like this…

And stitch in place. From the top it looks like this:

Fold the ribbon backwards again and keep rolling as you stitch it. This is pretty much how you make the whole thing, keep folding backwards, rolling and stitching.

This is a view of how I stitch the bottom as I go…

After a while you’ll see the rose starting to form. It can take a little bit of practice to be able to get the petals to sit correctly, the key is to make sure that you don’t wrap it too tightly, you want the petals to fan out not stick around the stem.

Once you are happy with the size of the flower then cut off any extra and fold it down toward the stem.

And tie it all off…

It should look something like this from the side, if you wrap it too tightly it won’t fan out this nicely.

All done! Then just attach it to a hair tie and you’ve got a very cute accessory :D

Once you get the hang of it, you can pretty much make them without paying too much attention. This is a great craft project for watching a movie with :D

This is really cute. I am going to have to try this. It does look easy too. I might try doing it with fabric strips too
Good idea, making them out of floral fabric strips would be awesome!

Good luck Rosie!
Hi Violet,
These are super-cute, I’m definitely going to have a go at making some! :-D
(I love your blog BTW, been reading it for a while but never commented before! ^_^)
Ruby xx
Thank you so much for commenting Ruby, I’m really glad you’re enjoying what I post :D
I used to make them without sewing, I just fold a long ribbon in half, and leave the ends separated, and keep folding them on top of each other, like a criss cross, then when it’s all folded, just pull one end and the rose comes out, it’s kinda hard to explain in words but yeah no sewing… xoxo
XD That does sound a bit confusing hahaha! I would love to see the result though!
Thanks Violet!

Hi! I really love these, but could you clarify the “fold back” part of it?? I’ve been puzzling for twenty minutes and must be dumb or something because I just can’t understand it. :(
You’re not dumb at all, it’s a hard thing to explain! You fold the ribbon backward diagonally so the fold is the top of the “petal”. I think maybe I should make a short video so it would be easier to understand ^_^
