Hello Kitty Velcro Hair Holder Craft Tutorial
Mar 28, 2011 by Violet
Here is another super quick craft which can be done during an episode of something on tv :D These haven’t quite made it to Aus yet but when traveling I’ve seen how popular they are in Asia. Basically it’s a shape (usually a bow or something equally cute) with velcro on the back to hold your fringe out of the way while you do your make up/remove it. I think the idea is that it doesn’t kink/shape the hair like holding with a pin would.
I chose to make mine in the shape of Hello Kitty’s bow because… well I couldn’t think of any other shapes and I’m running out of other felt colours haha!
UPDATE! Check out the free downloadable restyled version of this craft tutorial here in my gallery!

Photos are iphone quality unfortunately because this was a midnight craft idea!
.
What you need:
- Felt
- Needle and thread
- Velcro strips

First cut out the main shape of the bow in black felt. I didn’t have any large pieces yet so I did it in sections and stitched them together. It’s a fairly easy shape but if anyone wants it let me know and I’ll put up a pattern.

Separate the two sides of your velcro. The side you want to use it the scratchy one not the soft one. The soft one won’t grab on to your hair.

Cut enough so you can cover as much of the bow as possible, I needed two strips.

Stitch it in place and cut off the extra.

Now it’s time to add in the main colour of the bow. Cut out the red pieces of felt like below. They need to be a couple of mm smaller than the black so it appears as if there’s a border.

Stitch it together and you’re finished :D

Useful, cute and distracting from how sleep deprived you look first thing in the morning ;D Now that’s the trifecta!

This is so adorable! My to-do list of your crafting tutorials keeps growing and growing, first the daisy headband tutorial, the deco-ing projects and now this!
I would love to see a pattern for this too! I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to maybe glue a picture or fabric pattern on top to further customize it
Absolutely right Mai, you could really do whatever you like. Ok I will create an upload a pattern, I’m going to have a whole new downloads section soon :D I’m very glad that you’re finding things inspiring here!
wow they are selling these for a tidy lil sum here^^ Now i can make it! thanks to you~
i wonder….isit strong enough for deco? or even flowers? ^^
I know what you mean, I’ve seen them for like $20 here *_* When I found out what they were made of I was like… what?! I think if you used light acrylic jewels instead of heavy swarofski/crystal then it would be strong enough. Flowers might be too much but considering the materials cost like $0.50 and it only took me 20min to make you could always try it out and if it didn’t work make another one XD
WAHHHHHHHHHH!!! So adorable!! I love Hello Kitty
Haha glad you like it!
That’s such a neat idea and your choice of the Hello Kitty bow was just perfect.
Thanks Katie!
I waaaant one. Love all things kitty and this looks super cute! Not to mention straightforward enough for my butterfingers to make!
I’m sure you could make it :D I love nice simple project like this especially at night time when my brain is fried from work XD
Oh my God that is so adorable… I am not really a fan of HK so when I clicked I expected to see her face but this is so original!
To be honest I’m not a huge HK fan either, I like Charmmy Kitty much better XD I like HK when it’s a bit more tasteful haha. Glad you liked it!
YOU LOOKS RIDICULOUS!
XD Well duh! I’d be surprised if there are many people who don’t look ridiculous first thing in the morning with no make up hahaha!
Hello Kitty bow is such a cute idea!! Do those hair holders really work? I always use a hairclip, but I haven’t tried the sticky thing..
It works realyl well for me, you just have to squish it into your hair ^_^
That looks exactly like Hello Kitty’s ribbon! So cuuuuteXD
Thanks Minnie!
I heart Hello Kitty so much and I love crafts too, so this is perfect for me. I have to ask tho, does it really hold your hair back well? Seems like it would feel kinda loose, only grabbing the top layer of hair. Just curious.
If you press it into the hair it holds really well ^_^
This is really cute! I don’t know if I would make one because I don’t know how well the Velcro would stay in my hair (it’s dead straight and even my ponytails seem to fall out) but I love the hello kitty theme!!
Thanks! You might find the velcro works surprisingly well because it hooks under the hair to grip it sort of, maybe try with some spare velcro before you go to all the trouble of making one XD
I love Hello Kitty designs. So simple and so cute. I think I will never get bored with HK. I must try to make bow like this!
You should try!
Wow! This is so cute! So going to be making this~ But I’ll be changing the pattern to look like wrinkles, XD Gonna be so awesome~!
XD I hope it turns out well!
I love the Hello Kitty, and loved this post…. I always love your posts.
Congratulations for the incredible work.
