How to Cute-ify a Fan for Summer ^_^
Jan 1, 2011 by Violet
The lovely Retro Jet Girl sent me this fan a while ago just in time for Summer… unfortunately Summer doesn’t seem to be happening here in Aus this year *_* This year on Boxing Day instead of the traditional Australian shorts and singlet (not that I would actually wear that) I was decked out in a jumper, scarf and beret! Some places here even apparently had snow, which is just insane for the middle of Summer here! So anyway… The fan was really beautiful and I wanted to personalise it a bit. I’ve done this before with a fan last year which has since died a long drawn out death in my handbag:

This is what it started out like ^_^
|

What I used:
- UV nail polish
- Embroidery thread
- Scissors
- Beads

First thing I did was pull apart the bottom with scissors so it came apart like this…

Then using pink UV nail polish I painted every second one of the wooden pole thingies. I did two coats and let it dry ^_^

Then using the embroidery thread I slotted it all back together…

I put a bead on the thread too:

Then pulled the thread back the other way again and aded another bead:

Pull it all very tightly and tie it off.

On the ends of the thread I added a couple of other little beads.

Done! Very quick and easy to do and adds an extra point of interest. Also because I used UV polish it changes colour when I’m in out the sun! Very cool :D

You could easily go further by adding jewels to the outside part or a small row of lace along the top but I thought I would go the slightly more subtle route this time XD What do you think? |
wow mega cute ^^
wonder what the nail polish looks like in the sun :D
I’ll take a photo :D I did a review post on the polish a while ago if you want to see now, they were called Del Sol <3
Oh that’s a really good idea!!! I love having a fan in my bag but the beads add a nice touch that you cold also use as a handle. Nice job! :)
I’m glad you like it :D I totally do use the beads as a handle!
Wow! I like this one even better than your first one. And it looks so simple. PS, summer is in full swing here today.
Summer can’t make up it’s mind here >_< It's like 3 days hot, 3 days raining, very frustrating!
well australia does has summer. maybe not melbourne. We had a scorcher in Perth it was soo humid and disgusting! not pleasant at all. I would of needed a beautiful fan just like this to make it better :)
Melbourne’s Summer can’t make up its mind at the moment >_< I feel like I have to take a fan, jacket and umbrella everywhere just in case!
I like this. It’s cute and simple. It’ll definitely be useful to have one of this cute fan here in Perth. It’s going to be 40deg.C tomorrow! *faints*
:O 40 Degrees?! That is insane!!
Oh cute ^^
Very nicely done :)
& a happy new year Violet!!
Happy New Year Tasja!
Very Cute! I’m so glad I’m not the only one that caries a fan around with me.
I think they are a necessity in summer!
Wow that is adorable O_O as much as I love all your tutorials, I’m really not one for decoden and such because I prefer simple, but this is just perfect! I love fans as well, and baby blue and baby pink are pretty much my favorite colours xD Don’t think I can find such a cute fan to start out with here though >_<
Aww thanks Ilja ^_^ I’m very glad you enjoyed it! I’ve seen some very cute fans around junk stores recently, maybe try there to start with?
oh it looks lovely, well done!! I am so going to try this at home xDD
Yay! Let me know how it goes :D
Very cute! I love the colour combination. Happy new year ^^
Happy New Year!
Your inspirtation is never ending!
XD I live in fear of the day I can’t think of anything else hahaha!
I have a very large fan that I bought in Hawai’i that could definitely use some glammin’ up.
As always, great ideas!
That sounds awesome! I bet you could do it with the gigantic decorative fans for a pretty wall hanging too :D

I really like the subtlety of the deco you add to the fan. I think the beads on the end are just perfect. ^ w ^
