DIY Lip Glosses

Jan 10, 2011 by

This year as part of my Christmas presents for everyone I made them custom lip glosses ^_^ They are fun to make and you can personalise the colour to the person you’re making it for too.

What you need:

  • Vaseline/petroleum jelly
  • Containers
  • Mixing container ( the metal thing from a tea light candle)
  • Tea light candle and lighter
  • Things to colour the glosses with eg. other lip glosses, lipsticks, eyeshadow, plain pigments, shimmer dust etc.
  • Flavour or scent if you want. I used a tiny bit of perfume oil but it’s optional.

  1. Sweet! ^^ can you really use eyeshadows? it is going on the lips and i have a habit of licking my gloss…

    • XD Try not to eat! I figure that eyeshadow has to be safe enough to accidentally get in your eyes so it should be ok?

As long as what is in the eyeshadow is lip safe, it’s ok. Don’t use any eyeshadows that have Iron Blue, Chromium oxide, or ultramarines. They are not lip safe. If an ingredient in it concerns you, do a google search and you’ll get a quick answer as to whether it is lip safe.

  2. Love this idea! I have such trouble finding a lip color I like, so I may need to try some of these out!

Oooh! So cute! May do that with my niece for gifts for her friends :D

Oh neat! I don’t know if you’ve heard of them before but http://www.tkbtrading.com/ has lipgloss and chapstick base if you want sticky tube-type lip gloss or would prefer to use something other than petroleum jelly. They also sell all sorts of dyes, pigments, and containers.

  5. Wow this is a lovely idea! Looks really simple to do as well, thanks for the photo tutorial :)

  6. This is a great idea! How crafty you are ^_^ I can’t wait to try this out!

  7. this is great! i love your tutorials ^_^

  8. That’s a fab how-to! I’ll be using this to recycle ends of lipsticks for me, but as you say for other people I will probably buy or find an unused (unwanted gift? Part of a set that didn’t suit me) lippy as the base colour.

  18. I love doing this!!
But I never thought of doing it as a gift, mainly because mine would look terrible haha. But yours looks great and so professional, love them :D

  19. That is awesome!

  20. Salieria

They are great, I made 3 today :D And finally I have a colour I couldn’t get in any store ^^

  21. Yay!! I love these tutorial!! As soon as I saw it I knew that I had to try this!!!
and I did it!! but I found some problems:
The colour dosn’t show up, a little in my hand when I try it but nothing in my lips, and I used a dark brown lipstick.
And all the shimmering powder goes to the bottom of the container…
    jummmm…
Do you know what I did wrong? because I love this idea but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong!!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial! If the shimmer powder is going to the bottom of the container you might be using one that is too heavy or you may need to stir it more while it’s setting or after it’s slightly more solid. As for the colour, lip gloss like this will never be as pigmented as the original lipstick you used because you are diluting it with the other ingredients. If you want more piment you will need to use a bigger amount of the colour you’re adding. I hope that helps! :)

  22. Thanks for the post! Looks like a delicious science experiment!

  23. I love making my own make up, makes me feel really smart lol
