Violet’s Awesome Apple Pie Recipe!

Dec 23, 2010 by

James and I have been obsessed with a TV show called Pushing Daisies. It’s pretty much the cutest thing ever. Well we finished the series (it was cancelled ater 2 seasons) and since seeing all of the delicious looking pies on the show (the main character owns a pie shop) I’ve had a bit of an obsession with making pies.  When we first started dating I used to make apple pies all the time but then we got busy with work and it just wasn’t a priority.
But now I am a pie making machine and I’ve been trying all kinds of different flavours. So I figured I would show you how I start with the basics. I can’t remember where this recipe came from, it’s been in my recipe file for years and I think it came from a book my Grandma gave my Mum from the 1960′s. Anyway, here’s how I make apple pies!

  1. I love this! Just read through the instructions and it seems so simple and cute! I love your pie molds, I’d love to find something like that for my own kitchen! Really nice post!

OMG, Noodle Arms and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pushing Daisies! It’s just gorgeous. I could rave about it forever. It’s so lush and sweet and funny and everyone in it is just so pretty. *squeeeeee*

Your pies look delicious – I have bookmarked this post so Noodles and I can make some when she gets back from her Christmas hols interstate. She loves baking, and she has her own cutesy apron too! http://deedee255.blogspot.com/2010/03/noodle-arms-birthday-presents.html

    • ME TOO!! Have you seen all of them yet? I was so sad it was canceled but apparently the comic that’s going to continue from it is going to be awesome too :D Noodles’ apron is the cutest thing ever!! I can’t wait to see what you some up with for the pies :D

Yes, we have both seasons. We were SO annoyed when it ended kind of suddenly and tacked on that “and this is what happened to everyone” ending. :-(

I wish they’d hurry up with the comic – they’ve been talking about that since it finished!

        • Me too! I preferred that ending to a cliff hanger though because I’m not good with suspense, it just makes me really mad XD I tend to make up my own ending in my head if it’s not something I like! I’ve seen a couple of pages of the comic and I’m kind of meh about it. I really like the idea and it could be awesome but the art style they chose to go with is better suited to something action packed like Xmen… I always thought it should be big and cute and colourful like the show! Hmmm maybe I should just go a step further with writing endings in my head and illustrate my own comic ahahahaha!

  3. They look so yummy! *drools*
    Must… start… baking… :P

  4. Yum-o! The second I get home, I’m totally trying this out.

  5. Great job! I would love to see your recipe variations on the pies. :) I will be trying this out, and I will let you know how it turns out. ^_^ Thanks again for the great post and all the hard work you put into this blog. You inspire me to try new things all the time!

    • I would love to compulsively bake, but I wouldnt know what to do with the baked good! Most of my friends don’t eat sweets and I try to avoid them myself

    • No problems! I’ll add in the recipe variations soon :D Thank you so much for your lovely comment Alicia it really made me smile!

I love to bake, I’m a coeliac so can’t eat wheat or most gluten products, but luckily the flour I use has greatly improved in the past few years so my cakes, muffins, and cookies taste just as good as the regular ones (in my, and my boyfriend’s humble opinion :P)

    • That’s such good news about the flour, I imagine it must be so difficult to find gluten free products ready made. I wonder if you could make a gluten free version of this?

  9. Wow, those look so good! I love pies and apple are my favorite, though I’ve never actually made one myself. I think I’ll have to make them.

Also, just wanted to comment that I think you hair looks really cute like that and I love your heart-shaped baking utensils. And your apron. :D

    • Hahaha that is very true, James has no inkling to be a pie maker because he has it too good with me making them XD

  13. Gosh! It look so delicious.. I want 1 too

  14. I love your apron. It’s super cute, and those pies look soooo yummy.

If you liked Pushing Daisies you may like Dead Like Me. It’s from the same director, and had a very similar humor. It’s not as light and bright as PD though.

    • I’ve just started the first episode of Dead Like Me :D I don’t like it as much so far but it’s still pretty good!

  15. Magda

I have a small suggestion for you! Instead of putting the lemon juice in the mix, sprinkle it over the cut up apples. It will keep them from turning brown before you get them into the sugar mix, and your pies will taste better!

The heart-shapes are adorable, btw, and so are you, as always! <3

  16. please do post the other variations esp the mango one! they look so lovely and easy to make, imma try it soon! especially love the weaved part, really makes the pie stand out. thanks for the post, Violet. Meri-Kurisumasu!

  17. OMG, too cute! Only you would have heart shaped pie moulds! LOL. Now I want to buy some. Guess what?? Our apple tree is growing it’s first ever apples, and we’ll be eating them in a few months! It won’t be enough for pies, but maybe in a year or two’s time… I love apple pie

They are beautiful! My mom loves apple pie, but she never ate a pie like this.. So I will do it today for her birthday :D Thank you so much! I love your blog :3

  22. I’ve tried to find heart shaped tins everywhere in Brisbane but can’t find any.
Can you tell me what brand they are so I can search for them on the internet?
    :)

    • Hey Nicole! I don’t know the brand, they have no markings on them but I’m 90% sure I got them from the kitchen department of Myer Carindale. Hope that helps!

  23. Rachelle

i luv ur pies. i want to try it but we don’t have an oven so if you have time can you please give me some recipe just using a microwave?. PLEASE >.<

    • I can see what I can do but I’m not sure if you would be able to cook pastry in the Microwave without losing the crispiness :( I’ll give it a go though!
