DIY Travel Make Up Palette

Nov 15, 2010 by

I’ve been really loving experimenting with make up and mixing my own colours and things lately so I thought it was about time to make something to keep them all in! You all know how much I love customised stuff so this post is all about how I made my very own make up travel palette!

Celeste forwarded me this video tutorial she found on making one and while I thought his method was clever I didn’t have most of those items so I decided to start from scratch and just do it my own way ^_^

I think there are a lot things that could be improved with how this one turned out but this is basically a base idea and I am planning to to use the techniques I learned in making this one to make an even better version which I will of course post too!

This is my finished product:

  1. I’ll be happy just to have at least 1% of your creativity when it comes to crafting!

I love it! XD except that maybe the hand sanitizer part may not be very suitable for ppl with sensitive skin in case the alcohol or whatever ingredients in the hand sanitizer makes the person break out or something haha.

    • That’s very true, you should only use something you’ve checked the ingredients of ^_^ I’ve got very sensitive skin and this one is ok with me but everyone’s different!

  3. Wow that’s really neat, and so much cheaper than ordering a custom palette from a company. Your creativity always amazes me!

  4. Dee

You are so creative! What a fantastic idea. :-)

  5. Oh my word, aren’t you a clever trousers? I love the way you pressed your own shadows, I never knew you could do them that way before. That’s brilliant. I think this might be one of my favorite tutorials ever!

  10. One word: AWESOME.

Mixing lipsticks when you can’t get the right colour is such a good trick, for our graduation ball last Friday my friend couldn’t find the right shade of red lipstick to suit, so she mixed a red and brown together until she got the perfect shade!

    • That is so cool that she mixed a lipstick for grad! Now that I know how to do this I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop XD

I LOVE this, but is felt really a good choice..? It seems like it’d get really dirty really fast… :(

    • You’re right, as I mentioned I was using up things that I had in my stash so I didn’t have to buy anything else. This one was just a prototype to test the concept for me to recreate with nicer materials next time ^_^ So far with a week of use the felt has held up surprisingly well, because the powders are pressed quite tightly it doesn’t get very messy, if any does drop on the side I just wipe it off with a damp cloth. Definitely going to take it all into consideration for the next one though :D Thanks for commenting!

  12. Hi! I was wondering if you could do a basic tutorial on pressing powder in general? I have a beautiful face powder but it’s only available in loose powder which makes it messy to travel with (at school, in the car…. anywhere XD). I’d love to find a way to press at least some of it into a compact. Would I just use hand sanitizer?

    • Hey Victoria Suzanne! I most definitely can do a tutorial on that kind of thing, it’s pretty much the same concept though just hand sanitizer and press into place :D Added it to my list!

  13. oh wow this is an amazing tutorial, I’m gonna try this at home, thanks so much for sharing <3

  14. That’s preatty awesome! WOW.

    Love this!

  16. Next time you go to Daiso your should look for the cases. I know when we had an Ichibankan they sold empty pallets with Usagi or Pandas on them. It might be a bit less messy than a felt liner. Some of them even have mirrors too ;)

    • They actually had some there when I went but I didn’t have any money >_< The felt is surprisingly not very messy, it just wipes clean. I'm definitely looking into other options for the next time though :D

  17. That’s such a cute idea :)

    Love it !

I’ve used one of those metal cigarette cases, lines the bottom with double sided tape and stuck eyeshadow pots in there. It’s like my own little custom pallet.

Oh and by the way, youtube has tons of videos for pressing your own makeup.

Thanks for the tutorials Violet, you are very creatively inspiring !

WOW — That really is extraordinary! I definitely want to give this a go. You’ve really outdone yourself! =D

  20. Wow, that is really impressive! I love the sanitizer tip. I’ll definitely be using that in the future.

  21. You would probably enjoy mixing your own eyeshadows with Mica’s.

you can get a lot of colored pigments that you can use for eyeshadows, soaps, and nail polish!

    • I really want to try mixing my own, I’ve been eyeing off that site for a while! :D I’m thinking it’s going to be a good christmas present !

  22. I finally learned how to turn loose powders into pressed powders! I like them more because I feel like I have more control with them, so thank you! I might attempt to mix lipsticks too!

  23. Heya! I know you’re super busy, but is there any way you could do a tutorial specifically on saving broken shadows/blush/lipstick? I’m working on a travel suggestions post/tutorial and it would make a terrific companion piece. Plus its a perfect excuse to find out how you do it because I have far too many smashed eye shadows that I refuse to throw out. lol!

    • Hey! Sure thing, I’ll add it to my list ^_^ It’s a really quick easy thing to do, same technique I used to make the travel make up palette. I might be able to fit it in this week, I’ll see how I go <3

This is epically awesome! Do you have a link for how to make the eyeshadow?
