Quick Tutorial- Deco Umbrella

Jul 23, 2010 by

So I promised a tutorial on cutening up a plain old umbrella and here it is, deco umbrella time ^_^

There are so many different things you can do with an umbrella and so I decided to do a few versions of this.

Umbrella Tutorial

How you can decorate your umbrella will depend on what you’re actually going to use it for. For example if you want it to be a parasol and protect you from just the sun then you can do pretty much anything at all with it… but if you need it to protect you from the rain then you shouldn’t sew anything into the top section of it because the hole you poke with your needle and thread are just going to let water in!!

The key things I want my umbrella to do are keep me dry and fit in my handbag so I didn’t want to add anything too bulky or put any holes in the top. I decided to start off small and just add lace around the edge of the bottom of it.

What do you mean by ‘pleat’?

    • By pleat I mean fold the lace over on itself to create a corner which allows you to turn the lace in the other direction without the edge being pulled too tight. This way the lace will follow the line of the umbrella and will not look awkward. For a definition of “pleating” check here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleat
Hope that helps a bit, let me know if you have more questions ^_^

  3. great tutorial. i think i will do this with my umbrella :D

  4. That’s super cute. I can’t wait to see the deco!

Wow, even with the addition of the lace, the umbrella looks so much cuter. I can’t wait to see the finished product :)

    • It’s such a small change but it makes a great difference! I’m hoping to finish it tonight :D

  6. wow, so creative! @@

  7. can you hot glue the lace onto the edge? Or will the rain effect it? What if I decide to get a solid color umbrella and print screen something on it?

    • I don’t know if hot glue would be a good idea, because umbrellas are made of water proof fabric most contain plastic, the hot glue might melt right through! Screen printing would be ok as long as you were careful to use waterproof paint. The only thing is that most screen printing done at home requires the print to be put in the oven or ironed to set which might be very bad for the umbrella >_< I'd love to see if you give it a try though!

  8. too pretty till i don dare to use it when raining awww…

  9. This is so awesome!! Just by the small addition of lace makes this umbrella so much better :D ! I don’t doubt you’ll make it way cuter later on though xD

  10. Aww, this is so cute!
I would love to own an umbrella like this.
First step, I need to find a leopard-print umbrella. =/
