Going from Brisbane to Melbourne is quite the climate change and I knew that moving here I would need a really good big winter coat. So you know those gigantic Jesus Diamante coats that have ridiculous huge faux fur trim and an even bigger price tag of around $2000? I figured I’d just make one myself ^_^

This is that jacket that I started with… nothing fancy just a plain one from Target. Just make sure it’s a nice cut.

Awe, your so cute!!! I love the jacket, and I especially love the pink and red. They are my two favorite colours but they are so hard to co-ordinate. You do it with such style!
Thanks for your blog! It is so interesting and is helping me get through this long pregnancy with style and a laugh! Keep up the amazing work!!
Hope you settle into Melbourne soon!!

    • Hi Hanakei! Oh thank you so much! I love red/pink co-ordinates too, they can be so hard to find done well though! And thank you so much for your wonderful comment, it really brightened my day to know that I am keeping a smile on your face! We are all settled in Melbourne now, just stressing about the lack of internet :( I hope your pregnancy is going well, do keep me updated!

  5. in the beginning when I saw the jacket with the pink fur I thought: Black would have been better but seeing you where it with pink it fits you perfectly!!:D

    • ^_^ Thank you Rie! I am really happy with the outcome now too! Pink is definitely much more me ;)

i like this look a lot… simple is cute!

  10. Wow, that turned out really great! You really know this stuff! :D

  11. gearing up fer winter already babe!?!? :D :D haha awesome. love the colors, so totally chrismassy :) p.s – fur coats reminds me of cruella de ville hehehehehe!

    • Hahaha it totally is a bit Cruella! It’s freaking cold here in Melbourne, I’m not used to it yet *_*

  12. It looks amazing – and having seen it close up, I know it is! Great job, and great sewing skills too!

  13. Esz

Oh my god that coat is PERFECT! From target you say? I need one. Sooo been looking for a standby coat to last me through the winter. Must go to Target! The fur looks super too – makes it look that much more luxurious :-D

    • Yes Target but last year… and it was on sale at like 75% off :D When we have a tea party soon I will wear it and you can see up close!

  14. Just so pretty! I am ridiculously in love with those fancy Lolita coats, but there is no way that I would be able to spend 100+ dollars on one. I’ll just fancy up a plain coat myself. This is great, thank you!

    • Thank you so much :D Oh Lolita coats are lovely but it’s much cheaper to do a modification like this!

  15. u look fabbbb!!

  16. That looks utterly EXQUISITE! ^^

  17. Fabulous!!!

  18. Yet again you make the fabulous look simple! Absolutely love that last picture of you!

  19. I think this is the best DIY I’ve ever seen!!! I can’t wait to do this! Thank you!

  20. What a great idea! I have some jackets that the sleeves are too short for my liking. This is a great way to add some length and some style! Thanks for yet another great tutorial :)

    • You are completely right, it would be absolutely easy to add length to the sleeves with a technique like this :D Let me know how yours turn out!

  21. Kari

Omigosh, that is too cute!! Fuzzy things trigger an itchy reaction for me, so I usually avoid it, but that coat is cute all the same! Very JD ^o^ And that last picture… you look like a model out of a gyaru magazine!! <3

    • Oh thank you so much, that is like the best compliment ever!! Haha very JD is definitely what I was going for!

  22. The coat looks gorgeous.

That is a great DIY idea! I had a coat a few years ago I donated because it wasn’t warm enough and I went to buy one with fur trim. I wish I knew I could have sown on fur to give it a different look.

    • Thanks Kristen! Yes it’s definitely very easy to change the style of a coat completely like this, the fur makes it extra warm too!

  23. Oh my God, yet again – unbelievable! Please re-post this in October so I can remember, haha!

  24. sarasuperid

Your best diy yet! The coat is gorgeous, simple to make, but looks like a thousand bucks! You look like an absolute doll in it!

    • :D thank you so much for your lovely comment! That is what all of my diy’s aim for… looking like a million dollars and only spending $10 ;)

  25. This coat is beautiful Violet!

    Eat that Jesus Diamante~

  26. That looks super cute! And I love the red and pink combination.

  27. OHHH!!! WANT WANT WANT!!! The red and pink is to die for. I am totally going to give this a whirl. You are a marvel my dear!

  28. Ahh! Amazing! I’m not a huge one for faux fur myself, but you look like Russian princess Barbie in that last pic and who doesn’t want that?? I actually think the pink is nicer than black wouldve been, might have looked a bit heavy with your porcelain complexion?

    • Oh you are so right, I think the black might have been too heavy with my complexion and hair colour at the moment. Thank you so much for your comment, Russian Princess Barbie for the win! XD It’s really doing me well for these cold Melbourne days too!

  29. Plummy

That looks so cute! I can’t believe the original is from Target, it fits you so nicely! Plus, the pink fur is amazing. Echoing some of the other bloggers here, I’m glad you ended up with pink instead of black–would have been a bit too dark with what you usually wear. Plus the pink looks so adorable!

    • Totally agree, I’m so glad I ended up with pink too ^_^ I love a good Target bargain too heehee! I think the key to fantastic coats is always the cut, if it’s a good cut there’s not much you can do wrong!

  30. The jacket looked so adorable on you. Great DIY!!

  31. I think you look absolutely adorable!! This has got to be one of my most favourite DIY tuts you’ve posted, the coat just suits you so well! And now that you’re here, you’ll get a lot of use out of it :)

you are so cute i love your eyes!

    • Aww thank you very much Pinkue! Haha my eyes seem to be a point of controversy at the moment but I’m happy with them none the less!

  36. Sinny

Good luck getting used to Melbournes cold Violet, now you see why most Melbourne lolitas/gyaru girls NEED to wear bbiiggg coats XD

Speaking of lolitas, you should come to the meet up tomorrow for International Lolita Day, I know you’re a hime gyaru, but you could still come :D
We’re all meeting at Melbourne Central at 5.30pm if you want to come.

  37. I need to make one like that for myself. I LOVE fur. But I’d probably faint from the heat here in Singapore. T___T

  38. You are so amazingly adorable! <3 And this is the best tutorial ever. Seriously. I was hoping to find a coat with faux fur for the winter. Thanks to you, it's now possible. I love all white fur coats the most. Pink fur would be gorgeous with it if I couldn't find white. ^-^

Adding bows to the front would be cute, too. Like this: http://www.parco-city.com/mall/image/cmdty/02jes186/detail_1/501-17_1.jpg

    • Oh that would be totally adorable! Thank you so much for commenting, I really appreciate it :D I really love white coats too, I don’t like how dirty they get though >_< I hope your coat goes well!

  39. Stephanie

You remind me of Elle Woods in the last picture lol, very girly and pretty :) That jacket is so perfect and you looks adorable! Im so envious of your creativity >_< But i suppose as long as you make tutorials like these i dont need to be haha

    • Aww thank you! Haha don’t worry I’ll be making tutorials for many years to come I think so don’t worry! <3 Thanks for commenting!

  41. I am SO happy I found you! I am currently getting into the Himegyaru way of life, and you are the perfect role model :) Love this idea because I have a nice cut jacket, but I want a Jesus Diamante one ;) this is perfect! Thank you for being you ;3

  42. Oh Wow! what a great tutorial! And the end result looks great too. I wouldn’t have picked it out that you had added the fur trim. :)

  43. Kuroneko

Hi! Just started reading you blog today and all the tutorials are amazing O.O I love them!!!! >.< Spcialy this one and I'm wondering if I could do it with a coat I have wich is like lavender or pale purple, but don't know wich colour should I choose for the faux-fur :S Can you help me?

  44. I have been trying to remember where I saw this tutorial for a week now! I saw it for the first time about a year ago now. I work in a fabric store and alot of people want to put fur collars on coats. I like to be able to recommend a good online tutorial and couldn’t remember where i’d seen yours but I remembered the part about cutting the fur correctly. At our store we cut the fur on the back only using the very tips of the scissors and sliding across so that only the backing fabric is cut and not the actual fur. It leaves lovely hairs hanging over the edge of where its cut. It also means less bits of fur hanging in the air, which i hate because they make me sneeze and my face itch!

    • Yay! I’m so glad you found it again! If you’d like I would be happy to send you some of my business cards for customers looking for the tutorial, just let me know ^_^ I love your suggestion of cutting the fur too, if I have a lot of cutting to do I’ll do that but use a box cutter to drag along the back of the fabric. I hate the sneezing and face itching that comes with faux fur, it’s so frustrating for such pretty fabric! Thanks so much for coming back to comment!

I would like to sew black faux fur trim on a red velvet cape. The trim is already pre-cut to 4″ (came in a six-yard roll). The cape has been cut out but has not been sewn together yet. Should I sew the cape together and then try and attach the trim or should I attach the trim as I am constructing the cape. Any suggestions? Thanks so much from Texas!

    • Hmm tough question as I guess it would depend on the construction of the cape and how wide you want the trim to be. I would probably sew it on after that way if you don’t like it later you can always remove it and have a more versatile cape. Hope that helps!

Whoa, this looks like you spent tons of money on a brand jacket~ It looks interesting and worth trying out!
