What you need for this sneaker sunday tutorial:
- Shoes
- Glitter
- Pva craft glue/tacky glue. Make sure the glue dries clear before starting it!
- Tray to catch run away glitter

Remove the laces from your shoes.

Pour all of your glitter into a container to hold it.

Pour some of the glue onto your tray.

Add some glitter…

Mix it all together using your paint brush. You want a mix that is more glue than glitter. It shouldn’t be too chunky.

Start painting anywhere you want glitter!

I do sections around this size at a time so the glue doesn’t dry too quickly.

It also helps to pull out the tongue (which I’m leaving blank for this design) to make it easier to reach the other parts.

Repeat on the other shoe…

Wait for it to dry and you get this!

Do a second coat of glitter :D Depending on the colour of the glitter and your shoes you may need to do several coats.

Wait for it to dry completely and then paint on a top coat of plain glue. This will ensure the glitter doesn’t go anywhere and means you will be able to wipe them clean without damaging the glitter.

Make sure it dries completely before you do anything with them!

Here is a close up of them dry. It really doesn’t capture just how glittery they are in person! Also you might not want to glitter the holes the laces go through but I was in a super hurry doing this!

I replaced the laces with black ribbon too.

And done! Super shiny, you really can’t tell in the photos but they are absolutely blinding in the sun!

The first few times you wear them they might be a bit sticky. After you have worn them in the glue will lose it’s sticky on the outside. If you want to speed this up just get them a bit dirty XD To keep them clean just wipe with a wet cloth.

Even better if you have a matching ladybug friend…

So cute!

Lady bugs= sneaker coordination at it’s best :D

SO CUTE!
Ugh you’re so adorable and fashionable it hurts!
I love love love glitter, will definitely try this soon.
*adds to list of projects to do on holidays*
How much glitter did you end up using?
Diana x
XD Thank you Diana! Seriously I didn’t use much glitter at all, I bought a $2 packet from a junk store and used less than a quarter of it!
creative and loves as always! girls love glitttttttttttery :D
Glitter for the win! Love it :D
That’s a really nifty way to brighten them up! love it!
Thanks Fiona!
LOVE THE GLITTER VIOLET!! IT’S SO PRETTY!!
:D Thanks Michelle! All girls gotta love glitter!
Yay glitter!!! They’re definitely much snazzier after the glitter + ribbon change! I’m tempted to try this on some of my shoes now :-P I assume the glue you used was permanent and not washable (so like, not kids’ school glue, because that stuff washes away in water)?
I love them being much more personal that way :D No the glue doesn’t wash away in water, if you get them wet for a long period of time then it will turn white again and need to be dried out. I don’t walk through the rain much though so it’s ok for me XD
Love the glitter!!!!! :D
Black laces would probably go very well with the shoes too!!!
Ahh these shoes look so glam and glimmery. :)
:D Thank you! I love making things more glam!
Aww cute ladybug on cute shoes! Safe travels and good luck on the car adventure, I do terribly on road trips. I drove to adelaide not too long ago and there were awful “stop revive survive” billboards and it had a man with red eyes and matchsticks holding his eyelids open (it looked like something out of a horror movie because the red-ness looked like blood). I sometimes really thing that the Australian government just likes to scare us citizens into doing the right thing. I cringe everytime the anti-smoking advertisements come on tv :(
blah blah wall of text!
Hey Lauren, that’s really funny you wrote that, because I texted that very phrase “stop-revive-survive” to Violet as she drove down to Sydney!
And as someone who works for the RTA monitoring accidents on camera, let me tell you, safety really is an important message…you wouldn’t believe the number of smashes that come from microsleeps (often by truckers) – with devastating results.
I <3 You! Your message came right as we were taking a break too, perfect timing! I had some horrible images in my mind driving so we were extra careful *_* and no matter how careful or good of a driver you are you can't account for other drivers :(
Thanks so much for your well wishes Lauren, it is so scary thinking about all of that! We are all safe and sound in Melbourne (thank god!) and James made sure to take lots of breaks. I’ve seen that billboard too and it’s so icky!
that’s a great idea!! I have some green flats that have seen better days but decoupaging them with fabric didn’t seem a good idea, I can try this! Thankyou!!!
Oh that’s going to look so pretty! Let me know how it goes!
omg this is great! I wish I read it before i started sewing into my trainers :p T_T
XD What did you do to them?
you’re a genius! :O
the idea is awesome *_*
XD Not a genius just love glitter!
It reminds me the shoes in the Wizard of Oz ^^
Haha the modern version!
Oh, what a cute thought. Ruby sneakers? I’ll have to make some for myself, and maybe in some different colors too! Another great idea, Violet. :D
You could even make rainbow ones! Thanks for reading<3
Those are so adorable!
:D Thank you!
In the future, you might try spray adhesive instead ^^ It’s faster and you can probably get a more even coverage. Just tape off the parts you don’t want glittery with painter’s tape. Once finished, spray shoes with a sealant.
I think a spray adhesive would also be great but from my experience it doesn’t give as shiny finish. Definitely worth experimenting with though, thanks for the tip!
OMG more DIY I want to try, but on heels! I fail >_<
This is so cute and the ladybug shot just brightens my day. How adorable!!
Yes heels would be awesome! Yay for lady bugs too, I couldn’t believe my luck finding one right when we were taking the photos!
OMG, what an awesome effect!! I think I’ll have to do this for myself and my two daughters! Wow
Oh I bet your girls would just LOVE this!
I am not going to be able to get these rad sneaks’ out of my mind!! LOVE them.
:D Thanks Whitney! I’m glad you like them, if you make some let me know!
I want those sneakers! Love the glitter and the lady bug (co cute) :)
Heehee I love the lady bug too! Yay for sneakers!
those sneakers are so cute :D
however when it rains, will the glitter run? or will the glue melt?
The glitter won’t run in the rain, if they are wet for a prolonged time the glue will turn white again (not melt) but you can just dry them out again. I don’t go out in the rain much so it doesn’t matter for me ^_^
I don’t like red colour but i love glitter items!
So cute! ♥
Everyone loves glitter! :D
I really want to try this! I hope it will look as good with pink glitter too! Thank you for the tutorial (>w<)
I think it will look great with pink glitter too! No worries, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
<3 <3 <3 these!!
Might have to try a pair one day myself one day!
Oh you totally should!! I would love to see how yours turn out :D
Hey these are beautiful! I was JUST wondering today if it’s possible to put glitter on converse shoes and how it would stick and whatnot. You also take really good pictures! High five on a job well done!
Thanks so much Liz! The photos are all courtesy of my partner James ^_^ you can read his photography blog at: http://www.jimmyamerica.com
Do let me know if you give these a try!
Such prettaye shoes! Can I just coat the shoe in glue then sprinkle glitter over?
You could but the glitter would probably fall off over time… you need to seal it some how :)
They’re like sneaker-style “ruby slippers.” Like the from The Wizard of Oz :3 Super cool.
Haha very true! :D
Does the glitter start to come off after a while? I really want to try this, but I’m afraid I’ll make a mess.
Nope, as long as you mix the glitter with the glue completely and do a top coat of glue it will stay put :) I’ve had mine for almost a year now with no glitter loss.
LOVE THIS!! Will definitely be trying it, I love sparkly shoes more than anything but I’ve got a 1 year old and I can’t wear pretty high heels anymore… never even considered sparkly sneakers. Love it!
I’m so gad you liked it! Let me know how it goes :D
